Eye. All these things would have never happened. But ukraine now i see zelenskyy is here. I think zelenskyy is the greatest salesman in his history. Every time he comes to the country he walks away with 60 billion, billion. He wants them to win this election so badly. Thats Donald TrumpLast Night in pennsylvania repeating his ridiculous claim about Russias Invasion of ukraine and taking a jab at the ukrainian president while hes at it. It comes as hes expected to meet with President Zelenskyy later this week. Well have more on that in just a moment. Also ahold, the latest from the Middle East, where israels dramatic escalation of deadly Air Strikes on lebanon could signal the start of another fullfledged military campaign. And well Preview PresidentJoe Bidens Address Today at the united nations general assembly, one of the final Speeches Hell deliver to World Leaders while president. Good Morning And Welcome to way too early on this tuesday, september 24th. Im jonathan lemire, and thanks for starting your day with us. Weve got a lot to get to, and well begin this morning with israels extensive attack genz hezbollah. Overnight the Israeli Military announced it has struck about 1,600 targets across lebanon, and added that the attacks will continue. Israel began launching these strikes early Yesterday Morning and urged civilians there to evacuate. According to Lebanons Health Ministry at least 492 people died in yesterdays strikes, making this the deadliest day there since 2006, which is when israel last fought hezbollah. Meanwhile, the militant group is retaliating, firing its own rockets into israel. According to the israeli defense forces, about 165 rockets and missiles crossed into israeli territory yesterday. Most of those, however, were intercepted, and there were no reports of any deaths or major injuries. These escalated attacks are raising fears that this could lead to an allout war between Israel And Hezbollah. While a spokesperson for the Israeli Military says israel is not looking for a conflict, he stressed that the country will do whatever is necessary to push the iranbacked militia away from the nations northern border. The u. S. Is now sending more troops to the Middle East as tensions continue to rise there. The pentagon made the announcement yesterday, saying a small number of forces will be added to the roughly 40,000 troops that were already in the region. Its not known exactly how many will be deployed, but three Defense Officials tell Nbc News these troops will be on standby if the fighting between Israel And Hezbollah threatens americans and evacuations are needed. Now, that ongoing escalation in the Middle East is expected to cast a shadow over president Joe Bidens address to the u. N. General assembly later today. In one of his final speeches on the world stage, the president is set to discuss global challenges such as the Climate Crisis as well as the ongoing conflicts in sudan, the Middle East, and Russias Invasion of ukraine. Thats according to senior administration officials who have been speaking to Nbc News. Officials also said that President Biden will highlight his efforts to restore americas global leadership during his term. Additionally, hell underscore the differences between the united states and its competitors, promoting his approach to international cooperation in contrast to the more transactional World Views of adversarial nations. That will include china. Following his speech, the president will host a summit of the global coalition to address synthetic drug threats. Hell also speak further on the Climate Crisis. Meanwhile, former President Trump is now saying that the united states is to blame for Russias War in ukraine. That comment came at a rally in pennsylvania Last Night ahead of an expected meeting between trump and ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy later this week. Lets take a look. AS President elect, if i win this election, the first thing im going to do is call up zelenskyy and call up president putin, and im going to say you got to make a deal. This is crazy. What a horrible thing has happened just because and its our fault because its a war that should have never been allowed to happen. President zelenskyy will address the u. N. General assembly tomorrow. Hes expected to appeal for more military and political support for his Countrys War efforts. And then on thursday he travels to washington where Hell Meet with both President Biden and Vice President harris. Joining us here on set the editor of semafors global flagship newsletter. Good to see you this morning. Lets talk about the united nations. Of course, as noted, it will be shadowed by the conflict the growing conflict in the Middle East. Walk us through how that dynamic will play out and what sort of competing voices might we hear as it seems like the region is on the precipice of a larger war . I think what were going to see is multiple leaders who are really pushing for President Bidens ear, washingtons attention. There are, of course, really fast shifting dynamics in the region at the moment. The emrotty president was in washington just yesterday. Prime Minister Netanyahu will be at the u. N. General assembly thursday. Today, tomorrow, through the rest of the week were going to see this be the dominant issue as everyone tries to push for the united states to exact whatever pressure it can for israel to hold back and divert as you sort of referenced earlier, theres real fears. 492 people at least died yesterday in lebanon, and i covered i was in london covering when the 2006 war happened. At that time as well the costs of that war were tremendous. This one could be even worse. Are we expecting President Biden and prime Minister Netanyahu to speak this week . Im not sure about that. They have a tumultuous relationship to say the least. Well see what happens there. Hes expected to address the u. N. And prime Minister Netanyahu has a fractuous relationship with the u. N. , to put it lightly. Hes set to speak at 10 00 a. M. His aides have previewed they want to be sort of a valedeepvictorian address. And these two conflicts will overshadow it as is novembers election. Talk to us how World Leaders are viewing this moment for biden and also the choice between Harris And Trump . I think what we have to be careful to do is not Lump Everyone together in one trump. Everyone has different interests and views the united states differently. To take an example i grew up in india and theres a lot that say Indias Relationship is agnostic. Obviously ukraine is the other example where it is the political football in d. C. , and former President Trumps speech Last Night is a great example of this. I think, you know, how the November Election plays out will up undoubtedly everyone is watching. I think there are parts of the world, the gulf, for example, had a very positive relationship with President Trump, has had not as good but still a pretty strong relationship with President Biden. I think we have to be careful not to Lump Everybody together and say one side wants harris and one side wants trump. Really i think everyone wants to see a sort of stable election. Quick follow on india. You mentioned certainly a rising power. Prime Minister Modi actually even had a rally here in Nassau County on sunday. Where does he play in this moment . India is in a complicated position. India gets a lot of its Military Equipment from russia. It gets a lot of its energy from russia. And its a growing economy that needs sort of lots of Oil And Gas as well and is transitioning to renewables. At the same time india is a country that has built a strong relationship acrosS Party lines. I think everyone partly because of the united states and Capitol Hill and d. C. Is so focused as the threat from china, india is seen as catalyst to that. I think indian officials who ive seen and spoken to and heard from are pretty confident thats not going to change. Its a rare country i think that not that it doesnt care. I think everyone cares what happens in november, but itS Pretty clear the relationship is going to improve regardless. Human rights may get a different degree of push on who wins. Lastly and briefly semafor set to host an event on the side lines of the general assembly. Were talking today about the wars in ukraine and pressing global issues and we want to think what are thingS Pressing the world and how are they coming together . Weve got a summit with really big speakers, couple heads of state, joel embiid, a philadelphia 76er. And these are huge issues were talking about right now but we want to think about how do the next billion people get connected to the internet, the economy, and how is that going to transform the world, how does it affect the Climate Crisis, how do these things interplay. Thats going to be a day of discussions. Your viewers can stream it on semafor. Com. Well have complete coverage. Editor of the global flagship newsletter, thank you for joining us this morning. The man accused in the apparent Assassination Plot against Donald Trump at his Florida Golf Course earlier this month may face a more serious charge. Federal prosecutors submitted new evidence in a Court Filing Yesterday seeking to prove that the suspect, ryan ruth, was at trumps Golf Club with the sole intention of killing the former president. Ruth is currently being held on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted Felon And Posetion of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, after authorities say he was seen with a long gun lying in wait September 15th outside trump international Golf Club in west palm beach, florida. Trump was golfing that day. Yesterdays filing also revealed a note written by ruth declaring, quote, this was an assassination attempt. Ruths lawyer characterized the events as a publicity stunt. At the same time, former President Trump criticized the initial charges against Ruth Yesterday accusing the Department Of Justice and the fbi of mishandling and downplaying the case while giving the suspect a slap on the wrist. Trump made the comments in a campaign press release, suggesting without any evidence that the investigation is biased. Additionally, he called for florida officials to handle the case, not the feds. The doj did not immediately respond to a request for a comment about trumps remarks. Shifting gears now, ahead of his speech this morning at the united nations, President Biden was surprised Last Night with the clinton global citizen award. This, of course, comes after cnn reported last week that robinson called himself a Black Nazi and made other incendiary comments online. Robinson has denied those reports. He says he has full confidence his team will achieve victory despite four top staffers resigning over the weekend. Robinson also said hes in the process of taking legal action against cnn. Were in talks right now everything up to legal counsel to take cnn to task for what they have done to us. We are going after them. Okay, we are going to go after them for what theyve done, but we have five weeks left in this race, folks. Make no mistake about it. We are not going to let cnn throw us off of our mission. Robinson has claimed the posts on that pornographic website are fake. But when lawyers offices and other places have offered their services to help him prove that, hes declined. Joining us now Politics Reporter Interest the New York times, maya king. Good to see you this morning. Lets talk about Robinsons Campaign and whats happening inside his team or whats left of it, and just the level of concern among republicans that do they feel like the statehouse has lost, and is there a chance it could drag Donald Trump down, too . Well, thats the real question because even as republicans start to distance themselves from robinson in North Carolina, democrats are eager to fund raise and tie a number of these statehouse republicans in vulnerable seats to the candidate for governor, saying you supported him in the primary, now you should standby him in the final weeks of the general election. Several mailers have gone out particularly around the Charlotte Area with this exact message. And so itS Put republicans in North Carolina in quite a precariouS Position. On the one hand they have a very flawed candidate atop the ticket that they do feel they have to distance themselves to sort of staunch the bleeding further down or even at the president ial level. But there is value in Party Unity at this stage especially in a state like North Carolina, which most folks are saying would be an extremely close race decided at the margins. Yes, certainly democrats growing more optimistic there. Lets talk about the impact on the president ial race. Donald trump was just in North Carolina a few days ago. He didnt mention robinson not to watch from the rally stage. J. D. Vance continues to talk about him and sort of defend him. Whats the latest thinking from the Trump Campaign . How do they approach this . Well, i think they see they have some work to do to make sure this does not dampen any turnout among republican voters. Thats really the challenge here because democrats are, again, very enthusiastic in capturing this. Republicans ive spoken to say they want to increase their ground game, and make sure they have a message that appeals to a broad swath of voters. North koreans voters do often Support President every four years, and i think theyre hoping perhaps that pattern still holds. Oil just require, again, this very delicate line between supporting former President Trump, making sure that the republican base in the state is still eager to support hiS Presidency while also distancing themselves from Mark Robinson in a way. Lets remember, of course, trump has called Robinson Martin Luther king on steroids. Maya, lets shift to another Battleground State there in the south, one you cover quite a bit, and thats georgia. Former President Trump expected to be in the State Rally in savannah. But governor Brian Kemp not going to be there. Trump and kemp a longstanding feud. There were some efforts of patching that up, but seems like theyve only gone so far. Tell us if you would about the nature of that relationship and how republicans are feeling about georgia, which in the Gop Kind of is a mustwin. It is. They know that in order for President Trump to win reelection former President Trump, he has to win in these Sun BeltDeep South states, and georgia is absolutely crucial to that. And in order for him to be successful in georgia, i think most republicans agree he has to be on the same page and at least cordial with the states very popular republican governor, Brian Kemp. Not only because kemp, again, haS Popularity among the base and also more moderate conservatives in the state, sort of a broad swath of support, but also because he does have a very wellfunded get out the Vote Effort through his own State Leadership Committee and organization that haS Paid canvassers to knock doors in Metro Atlanta on behalf of republican statehouse candidates. I think theres a hope particularly between trumps team and also state republicans that Brian Kemp would be able to expand some of this on behalf of trump. They know that the governor of georgia is one of the best surrogates he can have. And if hes not going to be at trump rallies and sort of standing Side By side with the president , they do hope hes working Behind The Scenes to make sure he is successful in georgia, and kemp has said that he is. And polls suggest there in Georgia A very tight race. Maybe trump by a touch, but mostly within the margin of error. Now, in terms of what to to watch for today, were going to see Consumer Confidence figures as well as the fed surveys released at 10 00 a. M. Eastern time. Those officials note that the president s speech comes five years into what the united Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change declared as the decisive decade for climate action. They say that the president s speech will act as the decisive decade halftime report, if you will. Joining us now assistant to President Biden and National Climate Advisor. Thank you so much for being here this morning. We appreciate it. So preview for us a little bit as to what we expect to hear from the president. You know, it is, as noted, halfway through what the u. N. Deemed the decisive decade. What sort of progress has been made . Look, the progress is good. If you look at the scoreboard here in the united states, 100 Giga Watts of clean energy built under the bidenharris administration. Thats enough to power 2,500 homes. 900 Billion announced in expanding key technologies like solar and batty and wind. I think in the u. S. Weve doubled the pace. Were on the path to continue to accelerate importantly and i think as the president would lay out, youve got the private sector seeing the economic case to get in the game. Thats translating massively into jobs all across the country, 330,000 clean energy jobs created in the bidenharris administration. So i think the president will lay out how the scoreboard looks good, the fundamentals of the game are good, but weve got to keep running down the field. So obviously thatS Progress made here at home. There are other players involved here. The united nations has got a global audience. Give us that scoreboard what other nations have done, and in particular what efforts are going to be unleashed here to try to push certain countries namely india, china, to do more. One of the things thats been a hallmark to the Bidenharris Approach is strong leadership at home leveraged to propel action overseas. Ive seen it with the President Day one launch this Methane Initiative tackling super polluting Methane Emissions in the sky. Now 155 countries have joined in including the chinese now stepping up to say methane will be included in their nationally determined contribution. The Vice President went to dubai. I traveled with her. She called on the world to step up on things like renewable energy, nuclear energy. Were seeing here in New York those countries and the private sector commit to advancing that expansion in clean energy capacity, so i think thereS Progress thats being made on a multilateral basis. Just thiS Past weekend at the quad in wilmington, delaware, the indian government, the australians, our partners from around the world, i think, increasingly are stepping up on building clean Energy Supply chains, that industrial capacity. Theyre helping deploy this technology. Frankly, theyre all trying to download the Play List that Joe Biden put together here in the united states. Clean energy, jobs, manufacturing capacity, winning the future. Weve seen year after year the increasing impact, tangible impact of Climate Change, whether thats more powerful storms in the atlantic or the gulf or wildfires out west. What can you say to the average american at home watching this and feels like their life is changing, how is the administration tackling problems like that . Look, weve made a 50 Billion investment in resilience. What that means were hardening the infrastructure on coastlines. Were helping bury Power Lines so wildfires dont wreck the power system. Were out there treating forests so fires dont burn as strongly. Were working with first responders on things like extreme heat. Thats absolutely essential work, but we cant just focus on the gloom and doom. Weve got to focus on the opportunity, the economic upside. Thats what President Biden and Vice President harris and done, and theyve been successful at it. Lastly, briefly, what is being done to lock in thiS Progress, codify thiS Progress in case theres an administration next who doesnt care much about thiS Progress. Look, the politics of climate on action are unambiguously deteriorating. The republicans have put 50 votes in the house. They failed every single time. A dozen republicans wrote to their leader and said, hey, lets go home on this one because we cant pull the rug out from under this Manufacturing Boom and clean energy jobs. Lean in in a big way to meet the moment on climate. Significant day for biden in New York. Climate adviser, thank you for joining us this morning, ali. We appreciate it. The Crime Numbers got just released, and they are through the roof. Higher than i said. He corrected me, said, no, crime has gone down. Only a stupid person would say crime has gone down. You dont have to know anything about numbers. If you live in this country, you know crime has gone up. And, today, it was reaffirmed that i was right in the debate. Crime has gone way up. Theyre through the roof. Joining us now, Pulitzer Prize winning Columnist And Associate editor of the washington post, eugene robinson. Eugene is also an msnbc Political Analyst. Good to see you this morning. Thats another lie from Donald Trump. Yeah. But crime is an issue this year. It certainly went up during the pandemic, as the stats indicate. Started to fall again significantly. We also have Vice President harris being a former prosecutor, so lets talk about the dueling images Trump And Harris are painting. Only one of them supported by the facts. The Harris View is supported by the facts. Crime is down from last year. Crime is higher than most americans would want, and it is higher than it was, you know, ten years ago, say. But its nowhere near where it was back in the late 80s early 90s, when it reached a peak. You know, i could tell you any story you want to hear about why Crime Statistics go up and down. Some people say its demographics. Others say it is economics. Ive never seen a story that is really convincing, but i think good, effective policing does help. A better economy does help. Whatever is helping is helping. Donald trump is simply lying. Crime is going down. Yeah, eugene, its striking. Crime is just one of the issues. Crime, immigration, ukraines fate against russia, trump ties hiS Political outcome to the prospect thats bad for the united states. Hes against his own country so often. He is. He paints this dystopian picture on the Campaign Trail of a country thats falling apart, a country where the economy is in the toilet, where crime is so high that you cant walk out of your house and go to the grocery store. Its just a terrible place. You know, windmills killing birds and, you know, sharks and batteries on boats or whatever. Its all dystopian. Then he presents himself as the solution. Ill Fix Everything Day one. Ill come into office, and everything will get better. Its a really bizarre, certainly false and dishonest way to run a campaign. But thats what hes got at thiS Point. You know, he Cant Point to actual numbers, actual statistics. He cant say, wow, the economy is doing pretty well. Thats a good thing. Then maybe we wouldnt need him. Certainly, he paints himself he did that in his first term, too, you know, suggesting that everything is doom and gloom. He is the only solution. Contrast that with the more hopeful message coming from the democrats. Yes, they acknowledge theres work to be done, but still believing in americaS Present and future. Eugene, i know youve written about Mark Robinson, the embattled republican candidate for governor of North Carolina. Embattled putting it lightly. Lets talk about just what he means, what he represents to the republican party, and also how, frankly, it might not just cost the gop the statehouse, he might cost Donald TrumpNorth Carolina. He could if he drags down the ticket. Look, hes been trailing josh stein, the democrat, in this race all along. I cannot imagine that situation will not get worse for robinson and worse for the republican party in North Carolina after these revelations that came out in cnn last week. He represents the instinct that todays republican party has, to any african american, trumpfriendly conservative who sort of sticks his head up, theyre willing to just boost through, i guess, some sort of dei initiative they have at the republican party. Theyre willing to boost him right to the top. 2018, Mark Robinson was just a guy. Worked at a furniture factory, supported gun rights, gave a fiery speech at a City Council meeting. You know, two years later, hes being elected lieutenant governor. Four years after that, hes trying to become governor, with no experience and with a really, really checkered past. Some republicans start to distance themselves from the candidate. Donald trump at thiS Point has not. Democrats feeling better and better about their chances in North Carolina. Msnbc Political Analyst eugene robinson, thank you, as always. Well talk to you real soon. And thanks to a o
