Louie Gallo, an erudite and passionate Swampscott historian whose encyclopedic knowledge of town history made him a local fixture, died in a house fire in Saugus on Saturday morning. He was 78.
“Considered our town historian, he was a fountain of knowledge, a well-known, well-respected and larger-than-life character,” Angela Warren Ippolito, a former Swampscott Historical Commission member, told The Swampscott Reporter on Sunday morning. “He was my friend and colleague for many years, and I am devastated that he was a victim of such a tragedy."
