Good afternoon and thank you for joining us. Im andre senior and im claudine wong. Happening now nurses in Santa Clara County are officially on strike. They say hospitals in the county are asking them to do too much and not offering enough. Ktvu james torres explains how the two sides got to this point. Nearly 4000 nurses finished their shift early this morning and immediately took to the picket lines. Its all about ensuring Patient Safety and nurse safety. Strikes happening at a total of three area hospitals run by the professional registered nurses association. They say theyve not had a contract with Santa Clara County in months. Theyre demanding improvements in staffing, keeping nurses to just one hospital and improved security to prevent workplace violence. I was punched in the face by a patient simply because they were hungry and were upset that they couldnt eat anything, but it was doctors order because they were going to go in for surgery. And as a normal practice, youre not allowed to eat or drink anything. If youre going to go to surgery for your own safety. During the strike, about a thousand temporary nurses are filling the gap. Only a fraction of the number of nurses out. We were able to train in and orient a number of contracted replacement staff who are there, helping to provide for patient care and to ensure that our patients are safe. Despite the significant challenge, county executives say the terms theyve offered have been more than enough, arguing they provide competitive salaries to the point where vacancies and turnover rates are much lower than the national average. Thats why were so disappointed that that rmpa so quickly rejected the mediators proposal before announcing a strike. We were hopeful that that proposal, which in our view represented a very fair, offer, would have been accepted by rmpa. This could now cost the county up to 20 million, which is already seeing a 250 million deficit. These nurses, however, say the county is inflating the numbers it provides. They say in their most recent negotiations, they didnt deny the money. But the ratio of patients to nurses. And we need to have the right amount of nurses to take care of the patients. Similar demonstrations are happening at Oconnor Hospital and san luis regional down in gilroy. The strike will last until friday morning. Reporting from san jose, im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. There is turbulence between two of the bay areas airports, San Francisco and Oakland International. Now, Oakland Airport wants to add San Francisco bay to its name to attract more travelers. Ktvu Amanda Canton is live in our newsroom with some of the arguments for and against this proposed change. Amanda. Well, andre, the full name being proposed is San Francisco bay. Oakland international airport. Sfo does not want to see San Francisco at the front of that name. Yesterday, leaders at sfo expressed concern, saying the new name could be misleading and will cause confusion for the public, either through a misunderstanding of its physical location or its perceived relationship to sfo. But nearly 20 organizations and city leaders support this change, and theyre saying it will help bring people to oakland and to the east bay. Our proposed name modification is both pro oakland and pro jobs. We want to boost jobs and Economic Activity for oakland. Okay is located on the San Francisco bay. We would hate to see a situation where a traveler books thinking that theyre going to one location, and then only when they land do they realize that theyre somewhere else that they hadnt intended to go to. So we think its really critical for airports to accurately represent the region where theyre located. The port of oaklands commission is expected to vote on the name change at a meeting next thursday. Supporters say, adding San Francisco bay to the Oakland International airports name would help better identify geographically where the city of oakland is, and they want travelers to know that they can get to popular bay area locations from oakland. Now, i did ask leaders at oaklands airport if there were any other name options but San Francisco bay, Oakland International airport is right now the only name being proposed okay would remain. The airports code, even if that name is changed. Sfo Officials Say that they are considering taking legal action to prevent this name change. Live in the newsroom amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. The former president has held only one Public Campaign event since he locked up the republican president ial nomination back in midmarch. Trump says voters understand his Campaign Time has been limited because of his demanding court calendar. Look how well im doing and the people understand it. Both michigan and wisconsin are considered battleground states in the president ial election. President biden is expected to travel to wisconsin on monday. New at noon. We do have a better idea about californias Water Resources. The California Department of Water Resources held its most important snow survey of the year, since its water planning and supplies are based on this peak of the rain and snow season, it is important enough that the governor was there for the survey. Lets go to ktvu tom vacar, who joins us now with the results. Tom, ask yourself, when is a grade of c actually an a . Here were just slightly above average for historical and traditional snowpack for the sierra and the Trinity Mountain ranges. Phillips station at the entrance of the sierra tahoe ski resort, is just one of 265 snow courses, plus another 130 remote snow sensors blanketing the vast snowpack area. Our snowpack is at about 105. Using that metric, our automated snow Sensor Network looking this morning was about 110 of april 1st average snowpack. So were in a good place right now. As andy mentioned, the good news today is actually only part of the story. We will see over the course of the next couple of months how this snowpack translates into runoff into rivers, streams and reservoirs that are communities and our environment, our economy, the food that we grow in california all relies on that. Now, as to the all important reservoirs, californias big six mega reservoirs are already 113 of their historical levels levels, but they still have 16 additional capacity available to store any additional rains. Plus that coming snowmelt. But all three of californias 37. All im sorry, all but three of northern californias 37 key reservoirs are all above 100 of normal. The rest are very close to normal. Thats an amazing change. Back to you. It really is amazing, tom, considering how slow kind of the snowpack was to start and some of the other surveys that we saw come out of there where they were very low. We saw the governor in that video. Did he make a comment . What did he have to say about the overall state of californias water . Basically, he tried to push forward his plan for the future based on Climate Change and all of that stuff. And there was a question or two about that. But the overwhelming majority of the rest of the questions had to do with the oakland situation, with crime and with the help, the help that is being provided by the state of california. And of course, the budget which is very critical right now that will affect everything, including crime and reservoirs and everything else. So he was more there to just maybe take a bow, but he was really there to answer those other questions that he knew would come up. Yeah, certainly there are multiple conversations that are very important to be had right now about california. Thanks so much. Tom vacar reporting live in the newsroom for us at this hour. Our staying on the subject of weather ktvu meteorologist rosemary oroczo is here this afternoon with us to show us what the day to be looking like. And if the dress youre wearing is any indication, sunshine for most of us. Rosemary for today. Yes, andre and claudine. But more snow on the way, if you can believe it. More on that coming up in the extended forecast today. Similar to yesterday for many of us, although we did see a subtle change as expected this morning. And that brought temperatures down for areas especially over the north bay. Were talking about fog giving you a live look here over San Francisco, where you can still see a little bit of haze out there. The fog developed last night and moved into some of our bayside communities this morning. And with that, santa rosa 12 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. So you are feeling that notable drop. Meanwhile away from that influence livermore five degrees warmer this afternoon. San jose by four. So temperatures ranging from upper 50s at the coast, as well as in santa rosa to low 60s in oakland to low 70s in fremont. Right now, the inner east bay of walnut creek enjoying 71. Our winds are generally light. We will see just a little bit of an uptick as we get into the afternoon. A little bit of a localized sea breeze, but right now, hayward reporting six miles per hour, san jose also reporting six and were calm in livermore. Well continue with the partly cloudy skies for today. Do expect the fog to develop once again tonight into tomorrow morning, followed by high clouds associated with the storm that is going to bring us wet weather by thursday. So thats whats coming our way. This is what we do expect for the rest of today and into tomorrow. Again, notice were mostly sunny away from the coastline as we get into tonight and tomorrow morning. The clouds are back, this time a little bit more widespread, and the inner east bay, the south bay and the north bay likely to wake up with gray skies. A little bit of drizzle out there. Tomorrow is going to be a mainly dry day, but its going to be a transition day. Were definitely going to notice the onshore breeze picking up a little bit more, the temperatures cooling off just a little bit and then late in the day those low clouds move out, but the high clouds begin to move in. And that is what is associated with the storm that is coming our way for thursday. Temperatures for the afternoon today, 64 degrees in San Francisco in the north bay, 70 degrees in napa, and for the inner east bay, 70 for concord. So a nice one, especially inland , the south bay, the peninsula enjoying 72 for the afternoon. Today ill have a better look at the system that is coming our way as we are looking at wet weather, not only for thursday but friday, unsettled for the weekend and as i mentioned at the beginning, snow for the sierra. More on this in the extended forecast coming up. Rosemary. Thank you. Coming up, it looks like the us is behind on qantas screenings. And th reasons vary by race abortion rights. Most adults nationwide are behind on at least one of their Cancer Screenings, and that is according to the prevent cancer foundation. Seven out of ten adults are behind on at least one routine Cancer Screening, and that means they could miss an opportunity to catch and treat the disease early. The reasons for the health lag varied by race. When we look at the Early Detection survey results, the top reasons cited for why people are not getting their Cancer Screenings is simply that they didnt know they needed to be screened. Hispanic adults cited inability to afford cost as a barrier to Cancer Screening in black adults, cited skepticism in the Health Care System as a barrier. So we know a one size fits all approach is not going to work when it comes to sharing information, we have to make sure to tailor the messaging to the people to address the concerns or barriers that they have. Outrage after a homeless woman was violently attacked in San Francisco. Details on this latest incident that happened in broad daylight and involved sex workers in the neighborhood. And a week after the key bridge collapsed in baltimore. The first vessel moves past the wreckage into the port sex worker and alleged sex worker was arrested for that attack, and ktvu zac sos talked with a resident who saw the whole thing and captured it all on video. She says many of the neighbors have already made several complaints to the city about prostitution. I suddenly heard shouting and swearing and really, like, sounded like a fight. The homeowner asked not to appear on camera, rushing to her window overlooking shotwell street early saturday evening and capturing this on her iphone. I saw them grab this woman by the hair, throw her to the ground, and the aggressor, an apparent sex worker attacking a homeless woman on the street in San Franciscos Mission District at around 5 00. And then at some point, she got up and kicked the woman right in the face. The homeowner calling police, who arrived and arrested a 24 year old woman from fairfield. The victim, taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries for neighbors, its just the latest incident involving prostitution on their block. What happened is not an accident, right before that, there was like one person who was attacked two days ago. This is just happened to be the one, but it was on tape. Neighbor iman farhat and other residents say the problem has only gotten worse since the city put up barriers to deter prostitution along nearby capp street, all the trade moved to shotwell. There are literal traffic jams from the sex trade thats going on here. Trevor chandler, a nearby resident and candidate for district nine supervisor, calling on the city to do more to address the problem. I fully support license plate readers. Its a common sense solution that has been provided to city hall. In a statement, the Mayors Office touting the success of recent Police Operations targeting prostitution in the area, adding that moving forward , quote, all options are on the table, including the strategic placement of Public Safety cameras, street and other physical environmental chang, and of course, increased enforcement as well. What weve heard is we dont have enough staffing. Its not a priority. So my feeling is at least manage it and move it to a nonresidential neighborhood. As for the victim in all this, neighbors say they have spoken to her that she is recovering, but that she is understandably still very traumatized by what happened in San Francisco. Zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. Well, the family of alexis gabe is hoping a new documentary airing later this month will help answer questions surrounding her death. Well, a few ships are now being allowed to use an alternate channel to avoid the wreckage from the deadly baltimore bridge collapse. This comes nearly a week after a cargo ship slammed into that bridge, causing part of it to collapse. As rebecca castor tells us, cleaning up the wreckage is going to be a lot more complicated than officials hoped. This tugboat pushing a barge carrying jet fuel was the first vessel to travel into the Baltimore Harbor since the deadly key bridge collapse last tuesday. Crews have opened an alternate channel for essential vessels to pass around the wreckage, but say reopening the route completely will take some time. We are talking about tons of steel. Were talking about water that is so murky and so filled with debris that divers cannot see any more than a foot or two in front of them. Crews are hoping to clear two other routes to the port of baltimore, a critical hub in the nations supply chain. As work at the bridge continues, memorials are going up around town, honoring the six lives lost. Its very hard for those people, you know, you go to work and you never know if youre going to come back. Some lawmakers are suggesting the owner and operator of the ship should be held liable. But in a federal court filing monday, the singapore based companies denied fault and argued any liability should be capped at 43 million. What this does is it stops all litigation, it consolidates it. In this one filing on friday , President Biden will meet with officials in baltimore on the response. At least 60 million in federal funding have been approved for the recovery and rebuilding of the bridge. So far. In washington, rebecca castor, ktvu, fox two news. A jetblue passenger asking why hes being ordered off his lax to Fort Lauderdale flight, where he says he had just taken his seat on the plane. Get prepared or put my earplugs in. I went to sleep. The video was sent to us by other passengers who say they had just sat down next to jermaine graves on the emergency exit row. They were asked by a Flight Attendant if they would be able to assist in case of an emergency. It was his turn to reply. He was a kind of sleeping with the earphones and then he put it off and replied yes. She woke me back up, told me im a need a verbal yes from you that youre willing to assist in the event of an emergency. Im like, yes, you are sitting on the emergency row. Im sitting on the emergency row. Im like, yes. Everybody said yes. You know what im saying . I put me back in. I went back to sleep. I was woke back up by a supervisor telling me i need to come get off the plane to get off it, because i did not comply. Thats correct. Yes, and i complied. Okay. So everybody here told you this. Okay. So whats the issue . The issue is that they want to explain why he said the police come here. Were going to were just going to ban you from flying on jetblue. You need to come off before they get here because, its going to be bad. Other passengers dont want their names publicized, fearing retribution from the attendant or airline because he didnt say yes or he didnt say yes. Loud, which is totally nonsense. But they were just about to call, lapd. Was that the issue . Correct or no plane . Everybody on this plane was not the issue we have to remove from there. Lets got the issue or not. Okay, you answer my question. Can you answer my question . No, no. I give you my reason why did he, at any point offer you another seat . If the problem was your response about the emergency exit, i thought that would be the result of somebody not physically able to assist in the event of an emergency. At most, you move their seat, not kick them off the plane. He says he left the flight voluntarily, was put on a much later flight to a different city.
