This is one of the main shelters where people are also bringing a lot of donations. I want you to take a look at this line because it has been like this all day long. These are people who who are coming by to drop off water to drop off toiletries, you know, paper towels, anything thats needed, nonperishable food. And the red cross has set up the shelter here at the war memorial gym. This is where a lot of the people who lost everything in that devastating fire are coming here. As you know, youve seen all of those images. This region has been devastated. Those whove witnessed the destruction, they say it was just a raging inferno and we have two people here who actually survived, had to run for their lives. Joanne, describe what happened. It was Like Star Wars flashing fire. It sounded like a giant blow torch. And youre running from that. And we had to run in the ocean because we were starting on fire and were in the ocean probably like eight hours getting fighting the water, getting pulled out. Flames were hitting. You still things were falling from the palm tree on fire on you. Terrifying and i understand you couldnt even see because of all the ash and the embers. You just kept trying to wash it out with salt water. And you you suffered some injuries. Can you show us . Oh, not bad compared to how some people are. I made through it very, very, very nicely. Luckily, luckily, you made it out alive. But your house did not survive. I understand. Not a thing. I walked back up there at 530 in the morning and it was just a pile of ash the whole neighborhood, the entire neighborhood. Entire neighborhood. How do you cope with Something Like that . So much loss. I dont know. I havent thought about it yet. Im just trying to do what i can before it really hits me because i dont want to even think i lost my four cats. I think. And oh my goodness. And all of my neighbors. And you know, we dont know where some neighbors are still at this point, 67 people have been confirmed dead and so many more are still missing. Also, jacey, you were caught in that fire. Describe your experience. Well, i wasnt caught in the fire, but outside, outside, outside the fire. My house is in the middle of lahaina. So that was burned down. But i stand on the highway just north of town between lahaina and kaanapali, the only road where the tourists go. So i stand on the road represents the real church heaven on earth. Here today, which is one community, one people, not a religion of christianity. So i am really the pillar of the community that joanne was talking about. Glad you made it out okay. Thank you so much, jacey. Now right over here, we also have the red cross. We are seeing so many people that line just keeps on. So many people. Right. Its a good thing to see. It is a good thing to see the outpouring from the community with help and donations has been amazing. And as has been the devastation on the island of maui and our hearts are grieving for those who have been lost. And were doing what we can to take care of those who are here and at other shelters on the island. What can people do . What do you need at this point . The best thing for people to do from the mainland, if you want to help, if you are able to help, is go to red cross. Org and donate cash donations will get used the fastest. Theyre the best thing to give at this point. They will get services to people who need them so desperately on this island the fastest. So thats red cross. Org again. I know that we have seen so many people. Its heartbreaking. People breaking down, hugging each other. Another person from the red cross, i know, sir, you have seen so much. What has hit you the most. Its difficult, isnt it. My coworkers, friends, family have lost everything. So ive been working this event since before it was event, since 5 a. M. Tuesday. And so the devastation is indescribable. But whats more important is whats going on here, the Community Coming together, showing their support, the volunteers we got i love your red cross alone. We have 1400 signed up to support. And we have Community Partners that cocoon. We have a line around the block. Its a wonderful to see. Yeah. Thank you so much for speaking with us. Thank you so much. Were going to send it back to you guys in the studio, but you can see this line just keeps on coming. Yeah people are coming together to help this community. Ill send it back to you guys in the studio filming the amount of support that people are showing. We know that a lot of people have have a spot in their hearts for the island of maui, whether they have family there or just love to visit. And spend time on maui. Gina silva there in hawaii. Gina thank you. Teams of bay area volunteers left today to lend a much needed helping hand to residents on maui. Red cross volunteer tom tanner flew out of san jose today, heading for hawaii. Hes part of a team trained to deal with disasters. The red cross says its preparing to expand relief efforts if needed. Tanners role will be to serve as a liaison, getting critical information from Government Officials to the people who need it. My job as i understand it, and it may change , is that ill be working with local, local Government Officials to coordinate what they think needs to be done by the red cross. And ive got a lot of people to help me both locally and in the local governmental people are trained to deal with disasters, so its not just me. Im a part of a whole team. Since the fires began, the red cross and its partners have provided more than 2100 shelter beds for residents and tourists evacuated from maui. Its also providing food and emotional support. A bay area firefighter is also now on maui as part of femas urban search and rescue Incident Support team. Contra costa county Fire District assistant chief jeff peter departed from Oakland Airport this morning. He will be the Liaison Officer for the support team. Many people said they had no warning, no emergency alerts, and they had to escape, ran for their lives and figure it out themselves. Ktvu is brooks jarocz takes a closer look at how those systems work and their shortcomings as homes and businesses burned all of mauis warning sirens stood silent. Some survivors say they were given no notice. Nobody saw this coming period reminiscent of the 2017 wine country fires when Electric City and cellular towers went down before messages were ever received. I think the problem is focusing all of this on particular agencies or particular operating centers that may easily be overrun. Art botterill is a retired public warning specialist with fema and cal oas in maui, while wireless emergency alerts were issued for the fires, he says the lay of the land poses the biggest danger. This was clearly an evacuation problem. Most of our towns are not designed to be evacuated quickly or efficiently. It could be why hawaiis highly touted sirens didnt sound. Lahaina is a lot like the town of paradise, where a 2018 wildfire claimed lives as residents frantically tried to escape narrow streets with few exit routes. In lahaina, one main road was impassable, the other became jammed up in mauis Hazard Mitigation plan. A map shows all of the towns, homes and businesses in a high wildfire risk area, advising populations with limited access to information may not receive time. Critical information to enable them to reach places of safety. People are going to have to realize that this is a problem that they individually and as neighborhood boards and groups need to take on. They cant just expect that some Government Official somewhere is going to handle this. This is going to be a priority. Hawaiis governor promised better preparedness, moving forward. Campaigns have surfaced across the country urging people to sign up for public Alert Systems. But Communications Experts say its going to take new ideas and a new approach to keep neighbors in the know no matter who youve trained in advance, somebody else will be in town that day. And if the warnings are not in a form that they comprehend, they may have problems that way. Brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news. A man is the latest at his voice to a growing list of complaints and complaints and claims, rather, against tesla. Hundreds of owners are part of a Class Action Lawsuit saying their accidents are the sudden or the result of sudden unintended acceleration. Ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary has the story. Tesla has maintained the problem is driver error. But one bay area man who is a believer in tesla and its vehicles says his car malfunction. Neil salem says hes been a tesla fan for years and believed claims of sudden acceleration were a hoax until it happened to him twice in menlo park last month. He was driving his tesla model p100d when the car lunged forward at a red light. Then a minute later, after stopping at another light, accelerated into the car in front of him, it went forward, collided with the other car airbags deployed. At that point, my neither of my foot is on any pedal yet the car continued to push the car in front of me further into the intersection. 127. Similar claims by tesla drivers over the years resulted in an investigation by the national highway Traffic Safety administration. It found in 2021 pedal misapplication was the problem. The driver stepped on the accelerator, not the brake. Experts such as dr. Fred perez, a San Jose State University engineer who works and designs electric vehicles, says driver error or confusion is almost always the cause. But in some cases, theres a possibility the car could be in question, there could be a possibility of whats called electromagnetic forces. So when youre just like when you charge your vehicle, there is potential that is still exist in the electric motor that may propel that. But thats going to be very rare, in my opinion. Just like the airplanes, the seven 37 seconds and all that. There is a black box. So tesla can actually keep track of the actions taken by the driver. Just weeks ago, federal investigators launched a second investigation into sudden acceleration. Neil salem says he reported his findings to federal investigators in fremont. Whether, of course, youd expect a lots of low clouds and fog. And thats what we have for today. For day one and day two, pretty much the same story, although we could of the clouds mix out a little bit by mid afternoon or mid afternoon or so and temperatures will be warming back up into the low to mid 60s. So heat will not be a concern. Out at golden gate park. As you can see with temperatures in the 60s and maybe a touch warmer, though, as we head into sunday. In fact, that is the overall weather headline for us. In terms of temperature, we are trending up with those numbers after today into saturday, sunday and monday. And get ready for an extended period of warm to hot temperatures, especially inland. We could be flirting with 100 degrees as we head into monday and tuesday. So it is a warmer forecast. You can see the up arrows here for santa rosa, oakland, livermore and san jose warming up by just a few degrees. But thats kind of the headline with our temperatures with that warming trend, it kicks off this weekend. Heres a satellite in the radar. We have been watching some activity to our south. The remnant moisture of what was once a Tropical Storm moving into the state. In fact, enough instability to produce all of these lightning strikes out toward the sierra for us, closer to home, we still have the low clouds and fog just offshore and already making a push back into the bay. So no changes here, but into the weekend as that moisture kind of moves in from from the east or from the south, it could feel a bit humid, a bit muggy around here over the next couple of days. Current number of San Francisco, 62, oakland, 68 in san jose. Checking in 76. Well start out tomorrow morning with some gray and temperatures in the 50s and the 60s and then into the afternoon hours, the clouds will clear back to near the shoreline. So still some patchy fog near portions of the coast. 60s warmest locations tomorrow back up into the 90s for your saturday afternoon as you can see with these forecast highs. So most neighborhoods a little bit warmer than today and we begin to introduce some more 90s for tomorrow because this guy this area of High Pressure is actually developing. Typically were talking about that four corners area of High Pressure out out in the desert. But this time its building up to our north. So that will lead the warming trend or trigger the warming trend into the weekend. Some low 90s could be approaching the mid 90s on sunday and some mild conditions right near the immediate coastline. Heres the forecast models you put it into motion, youll notice we still have the low clouds and fog, maybe some drizzle near the immediate coastline and then another batch of showers and thunderstorms out toward the sierra. Some of this cloud cover will be approaching the bay area from the east throughout saturday and into sunday. So it could be that maybe that filtered sunshine and maybe once again, feeling a bit humid, a bit muggy out there. Once again, your forecast highs for your saturday afternoon, 60 in San Francisco 70s in oakland. Some 90s out toward livermore and antioch.
