So as we go into tomorrow, you can see the forecast high, or the forecast particulate matter not good, but not as bad as it has been. Here is how it looks statewide. You can see that there. And that statewide look will be better tomorrow. There will be more yellows. And then this is the reason. Here, i dont want to do that. Im going to do this, and these are some other areas, youre still see an unhealthy range. This tomorrow. But by tomorrow afternoon, look at what is happening offshore. On his visit to california today, President Trump was critical of forest management, saying a lack of attention to dead trees is fueling wildfires, but what he failed to mention that most of the dead timber is in national forests, that are the responsibility of the federal government, not the state. Tom vacar has this report. Reporter theres been long standing drought that has weakened tens of millions of trees, stopping their ability to take on nourishment, damage their immune systems, and iv ability to defend themselves from heat, disease, and insect infestation. The 2012, 2015 drought kills hundreds of millions of trees. Now those trees are starting to fall. Many were left in blanket with temperatures inches ever higher, the growing bark beetle population no longer laid dormant by cold weather bores into the trees, devastating the forests. All of that adds readily burnable fuel to future fire. There Climate Change has compounded that. It is another factor compounding the issue opinion. Reporter the Forest Service puts the bark and drought beetle death tree toll at 163 million and increasing. Here in the bay area, we have sudden oak death, which actually is killing a lot of oak in the bay area. That having an impact. Reporter and then throw in the human factors, careless people starting fires, arsonists, and poor forest and vegetation management, which has doubled and tripled the number of trees in california over the last century, now dying at a faster rate. Now we see those trees coming down on the found and that contributing to fire. Reporter in california alone, the federal government owns about 48 million acres of the states 100plus million acres, just under half. Nonetheless, President Trump has scolded california to rake the forests to reduce wildfires. Threatened the state of california, 40 million americans that happen to live here in the state of california to defund our efforts on wildfire suppression because he said we havent rake enough leaves. You cant make that up. Reporter today newsom doubled down on that. One thing is fundamental. 57 of the land in this state is federal forest land. 3 is california. Reporter what the president doesnt know or fails to acknowledge is that much of the land that has burned for years and and is burning right now is, in fact, federal land under federal control. Consistently year over year, the amount of federal lands burned is just about half the total acres burned in the state. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. Tropical storm sally strengthened into a hurricane today and has moved towards the gulf coast. Louisiana may avoid a direct hit, but those along the mississippi gulf coast are now preparing for the worst. Continue to monitor the weather, but be prepared for the worst case scenario, because with this storm slowing from 12 to 8 miles per hour, it could get worse before it gets better. The National Hurricane center said lifethreatening flash flooding is possible, and storm surges could be as high as 11 feet. Forecasters predicting sally could strength into an a category 2 hurricane before making landfall sometime late tonight or tomorrow morning. Back on the weather front here, we have some changes coming. Its in the form of this guy. This is really just what the doctor ordered. Were having a nice cool week this week because of this. As we head into tomorrow, and wednesday, this bad boy just changes the air mass. Not completely, but its going to push that just complete smoky air, unfortunately for reno and oregon and idaho, theyre going to get it, but its going to push it out of here. It should be not so much tomorrow, but by wednesday, it should be significantly better. Why has the forecast been so confusing, or not perfect on the smoke the last week or so . Because weve never seen smoke like this before. Weve never had this many wildfires. Its just unprecedented stuff, so the predicting models that predict smoke are just baffled, because of the layers. How deep the smoke plume was and the aerial distribution, how far north, south, east, and west. So wednesday looks like our best bet. Why didnt that happen been . Because we didnt have a significant weather system pass through. And this system, fortunately for us, appears, that low i showed you, appears to be a significant weather system. Enough to get the air out. So fingers crossed, as well, because, you know, weather is not an exact science as we are finding out this week. Theres all of the fog tomorrow morning. Air quality wont be that great, but it wont be as bad as it has been, and it will probably be a little bitter than today, which is probably better for most of us. Forecast tuesday. This is the system. I wish it would rain. It is going to rain up around portland and seattle, but that system moves through, and thats the change of air mass. We should be in a significantly changed air mass by the time we get to wednesday and thursday. Forecast highs tomorrow, 88 in fairfield, 88 out in antioch area. Its just going to be more bearable for us, at least thats the plan. Theres the fiveday forecast. And let me pop in sunday, too. The thing i like, too, andre and julie, that youre not looking at some big heat here. We have a really good run five or six days here of weather that is manageable to get more containment on fires, to get rid of the smoke and abate any fires that may get started in the meantime.
