The red flag warning has been extended into the evening hours for possible Lightning Strikes. This was, i will not say unprecedented, but i havent seen a lightning hit like this. Not the number but the aerial distribution. For km, Lightning Strikes and then look at this. Hundreds of strikes. They ended up covering the entire bay area. Very unusual. This went on for five hours. We do see the storms, we even saw some at noon. Backing up, that was the story. Heavy lightning and heavy rain in some places. The excessive heat warning was in effect and is in effect through tomorrow and wednesday. What we will see is this heat advisory. What we have seen has been extended into tomorrow. The advisory and yellow. Thunderstorms are a possibility. Closer to the morning hours. A big heat advisory stays in effect through the middle of the week. There was enough pg e may have to cut power this week. We pretty much lost all of our business for the weekend. For mexia salvaging food items at her restaurant. The business lost power right before dinner. The restaurant is already struggling because of restrictions. She expects a triple digit heat is to blame. And there are the outages that you see as a result of extreme heat which sometimes causes pieces of equipment to fail. Tens of thousands of customers didnt have power sunday due to the weather. Not to mention, for the First Time Since 2001, the electricity grid operator has ordered rotating outages went demand appeases supply. It showed sundays peak usage at 43,000 megawatts. Mondays forecasted peak will be higher. We recommend all customers to make preparations for possible outages. Charging devices when there is power. They are issuing a flex alert, calling on everyone to conserve energy until wednesday from 3 00 until 10 00. If it is necessary, absolutely. It is a sunday. Work isnt happening today. Tomorrow and the next day, it would be more annoying. The owner is considering closing business for a few days. It is already a big impact. The heat is crazy. They are notifying 10 minutes before a rolling blackout is to occur, making it difficult to notify customers. A blackout will last no more than two hours and will not happen overnight. Pg e will try not to impact the same customers. Pg e is asking people to conserve during the heat wave by doing several things. One by adjusting your thermostat to 78 or higher or turn it off if you will be away from home. Use the fan instead of air conditioning when possible. Also, pull your drapes and turn off unnecessary lighting. Put off things like vacuuming, launter 6 00 pm. If you have a pool, sent the pump to run overnight instead of during the day. Struck irregulars issued the advisory will be in place through tomorrow. The agency said airquality conditions are expected to be moderate or good. The fires burnors closed until smoke level subside. Officials also recommend that those that are impacted that their air conditioning units and ventilation systems to recirculate to prevent outside air from moving inside. The hot and dry conditions led to red flag warnings that were extended until tomorrow. In Contra Costa County there are mandatory evacuations underway. Officials say the deer zone fires are burning near homes. So far they burned 400 acres with no containment. There is another fire burning, the march firebird 850 acres with no containment. That is in the brentwood area. It is associated with the zone fire which is on the southwest side of brentwood near mount diablo. The march fire which is a cluster of three fires, south that has burned about 850 acres. We have to get the cattle out of here. Concern over rescuing cattle have these men scrambling. The marsh fire, now burning near the Regional Park is one of several that may have been sparked this morning by mother nature. We had dry lightning hitting the ground which may have started the fires. Reporter a beekeeper that praises firefighters for helping save all of his highs said the fire started at around 4 00 amsc witnessed what the storms brought in. The lightning was like a machine gun. All over the place. Reporter a coalition of local firefighters were seen coordinating efforts to fight the flames from both the air and ground. The hot and dry cothat began hitting Northern California before sunrise. Starting this morning and multiple hours after. A considerable amount of lightning. Reporter southwest, deer zone fire also believed to be sparked by lightning. Residents have been told to standby for potential evacuation as a cluster of fires grows and the threat of more weather related fires looms. They are predicting there is a chance it will continue. As for the fires we just mentioned, the good news is, no reports of any injuries or damage to property. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for residents living near a wildfire in monterey county. Officials say it has burned 2000 acres and is only 10 contained. It was also sparked by dry lightning. At least five structures have been damaged. Another 30 have been threatened. For firefighters suffered injuries while fighting the fire. Not to Los Angeles County where the lake fire has grown to more than 18,000 acres. That fire started wednesday about five miles north of magic mountain. Cal fire said the lake fire destroyed 21 buildings. Officials cant say how many of those were homes. Reporter on the streets of San Franciscos tenderloin, many people are in desperate situations. Homelessness, Mental Illness and countless caught in the clutches of addiction. Opiates and other drugs have long been a problem but the recent introduction of fentanyl changed everything. It seems like it is getting really popular. Even people like hard drunks. Reporter fentanyl is 40 times stronger than heroin and a stone cold killer. I overdosed six times in one year. Reporter last year Overdose Deaths more than doubled, hitting almost 350. The medical examiner has to finalize hundreds of autopsies. Last year we saw huge increase in Overdose Deaths. This year were on pace for a large increase. Ell is an epidemiologist that has beenthr decades. He has been a longtime advocate for safe consumption sites. It is to make sure people are not using. It is being exacerbated by the shelter in place ordinance. Reporter people working with users every day are seeing the same trend. We are seeing a massive increase in fatal overdoses. Is help out narcan. We have seen an uptick in fatal overdoses. That is often caused by people using alone and no one available to reverse the overdose. You cannot use the drug alone. You have to have somebody there. If you go out, you are finished. Reporter on the edge of the tenderloin, we found a community of people using fentanyl together. To make sure someone is around to administer narcan. I overdosed. Reporter narcan saves thousands of lives per year. Carmen sierra was brought back from the brink of death three times. She carries it with her and said she saved dozens of others. So many of my friends have no access. It makes their use 100 times more dangerous. Reporter San Francisco police carry it as well. They have reversed more overdoses than any previous year. Police have reversed almost 100 overdoses in just the tenderloin neighborhood so far this year. The shelter in place order has also disrupted the supply chain. Users are going to different dealers that may have more powerful drugs. Others who are clean may be using again because of the stress. People are coming to the area because they know they can get it here. Reporter Daniel Comeau is special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement administration. He said the drugs had a long journey to get here. They are mostly made in china and mexico. They are super labs and from there, get across the border, spread out throughout the United States and they prey on those with addictions. Reporter back on willow alley, the epidemic continues to rage and will long outlast coronavirus. Once you lose control of this chaos. Reporter in San Francisco, ktvu also in San Francisco, a Record Number of Police Officers are leaving the force. The chronicle reports that in the First Six Months of the year, 23 officers resigned. Most took jobs in other Police Departments in california and outside the state. By comparison, 26 officers resigned in all of last year. Only 1000 left in 2018. The president of the police union said the one reason officers are leaving is they are upset about money being pulled from the department. Instead it budgeted for social causes. Officers also say the high cost of living in the bay area is another factor.
