Lets go straight to the meteorologist, we are seen rain, hail, and a lot of snow up in the mountains just today. Quite a bit of snow in the sierra. Locally, if you thought it was cold enough to snow, you were right on, with dropping snow areas in the bay area to 22,500 feet. You can see a little bit of a dusting of snow. So yeah, the snow levels continue to drop here in the bay area. A Winter Weather advisory in fact toward the big sur coastline for today into tomorrow. What about those rainfall totals . Those numbers really adding up. San francisco 1. 14. San jose,. 86. Oakland,. 70. Concord, just over half an inch of rainfall. These were measured today around 17 and 20 inches. Snow still in the forecast for today. Heres what it looks like on the satellite, and the radar as we come in closer. Today, we still have some scattered showers, in fact the possibility of some thunderstorms showing up. Some areas experiencing a bit of a break in the clouds, but right now, you can see activity closer to concord, closer to antioch. Portions of hail over to bay point, earlier today. Some more breaks in the showers, but still some action closer toward the santa cruz coastline for this afternoon. As we head toward thanksgiving, just a slight chance of a few showers, but into the weekend, a different story. Were talking about another potent storm system. It looks like our active weather pattern will continue. Mark, looking forward to that. Thank you. A couple from the bay area were among hundreds of people stranded on northbound i5, just south of mount shasta for more than 17 hours. They got stuck in siskiyou county, with blizzard conditions. They were trying to make the best of the situation. They tell us they were lucky there was a mini mart with a bathroom and food within walking distance, just about a half mile away. Were okay. Were stuck in a mini cooper, so theres not a whole lot of leg room. But how are you doing, babe . Good. We picked up a bunch of stuff at the mini mart, so at least thats not an actual concern anymore. And being stuck here 17 hours or so. Its pretty positive. Northbound interstate 5 where the couple was stranded finally reopened just after 2 30 this afternoon. The southbound lanes had already opened up at about 10 00 this morning. That was certainly good news for a lot of folks heading up to the sierra. For more now on the messy commute, were joined by a caltrans spokesperson. Obviously, caltrans keeps a close eye on the forecast. We know that a system like this is coming in, what does caltran do to get prepared . Yeah, it was funny watching that piece, i remember being in that exact position with my kids. There are some usual suspects for us, like highway 5 up in the sierras. But preparing for a storm there are a number of things that we can do. Our projects will come in, and well be tarping a big dirt pile. Well be looking at hydro seating, some of the places where vegetation has been cleared. Sometimes thats what we do in places that have been affected by fire as well. Because its all about controlling where the water goes. When we talk about interstate 5 being shut down because of snow, interstate 80 closed because of snow, even the grapevine in Southern California, can you talk about the work that caltrans does to try to keep these major arteries open, and the challenges you face in trying to do that . A lot of folks think caltrans has a bunch of snow plows. And we use them. What thats all about is safety first and our people. As we come into the stormy season, one of the the most important things we do is get our crews to respond around the clock. Caltrans maintenance crews go on 12 hour work schedules, so we can be ready whenever the issues break out, and we actually monitor the hot spots with our partner agencies, like the california highway patrol. Any advice for spoke folks at home . There are a couple of tools that people with use. Caltrans has quick maps. You can also use 511. Org for more information on alternative lanes that you can use. When the first rains start to hit like last night, the oils that have been on the freeway, can make the freeway slick. Even a short break in the rain, and bringing the rains back can bring those slippery conditions back in, so people need to be aware. So this is getaway day, and we see the conditions on the freeways. This coming sunday, when folks are returning home from the thanksgiving holiday. Were expecting even more rain this weekend, how concerned you know, is caltrans in terms of the storm system moving into this weekend. Really appreciate it, but happy thanksgiving. A lot of people making plans for thanksgiving. Lets check in with mark ttle m a little bit of a break. For the most part, a dry day, but theres still a slight chance of a few le over showers or sprinkles. On the c heres the satellite, and the radar, still a fairly active radar this afternoon, so if you dont have the shower activity in your neighborhood right now, we still have some showers, maybe not too far away. The Southern California wildfire threatened thousands of storms. Rain felt today on the cave fire in the mountains above santa barbara, authorities did issue a warning about potential debris flows, but the first round of rain passed without any problems. This fire burned more than 4300 acres, and it now stands at 20 containment. No injuries have been reported there. The fire did force more than 5500 people to evacuate. But those evacuation orders have now been lifted, and most evacuees have returned home. Federal Health Officials now say there are 67 confirmed cases of suspected e. Coli contamination linked to romaine lettuce from salinas. Those illnesses happened in 19 states. The majority in wisconsin. 39 people had to be hospitalized and 6 suffered kidney failure. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported. The cdc is investigating the cause. Patrick bauer joins me now live. We mentioned there is an investigation to try to pinpoint what the cause is. But how does, you know, romaine lettuce become contaminated in the first place . Yes, of course. E. Coli, including the types implicated in the current outbreak, generally lives in the guts of livestock, like cows. It can travel via a variety of passageways. Equipment, or potentially manure, Something Like that on different sorts of animals. What weve seen in the previous couple of outbreaks that weve had in romaine lettuce, is tracing the contamination likely back to an Irrigation Water source. Its too early to tell with this particular outbreak, but with the previous two, thats what we think. If it is an irrigation source, what do you do to stop it . Well, the state officials who are in charge of managing food safety, and our federal Health Officials at the fda, and the industry itself has been pursuing a variety of avenues to keep it in the growing environment. There is a lot of of work being put into testing water. Theres a lot of work being put into options for treating that waterer, as it comes out of the source reservoirs, and goes into the field as well. At this point, its too late, so really focusing on a lot of prevention efforts. This is a big hit to the industry. Very much so. For folks at home who might be, you know, wanting romaine, or have it in their refrigerator, what do you advise them to do . Well, i think that following the fda, and cdc guidance is the best course of action right now. If you go onto the ftc website, they would advise that people not consume any romaine lettuce. The industry has been voluntarily pursuing labeling. So there should be a label on the package that clearly states where the romaine is grown. If theres not such a label, the cdc and fda is recommending people discard that. The recommendations are to clean the refrigerator, and drawers, any sort of surface on which that romaine might have been stored or prepared. Because again, the contamination might spread in the home. Thats good advice. I sort of expected once i got rid of the lettuce, the potential problem was over. You mentioned those other outbreaks. It does seem to happen to romaine lettuce. Leafy greens. Why is that . Is it specifically because of the irrigation . Theres a couple of specific elements of the physiology of romaine lettuce that make it potentially more susceptible. Again the science is sort of out on this. But lettuce in general has very wide surface areas. Its also consumed raw. Thats one of the health benefits. That means theres no steps that would kill any e. Coli or something. Also, lettuce is one of the most highly consumed vegetables in the american market. I just looked this up earlier today, Something Like 2 billion pounds of romaine lettuce moves through the u. S. Market every year. Wow. So its a massive volume, it moves a long way, very quickly. People eat a lot of it. Patrick, really appreciate you coming in. If you do have romaine lettuce, make sure you check that label and get rid of it. Already republicans are calling the next phase unfair. Im kevin court, traveling with the president here in west palm beach. Ive got that story and much more coming right up. He couldve just been the middle class kid who made good. But Mike Bloomberg became the guy who did good. After witnessing the terrible toll of gun violence. He helped create a movement to protect families across america. Im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Sources now say President Trump knew about the whistle blower complaint in august, before the white house released nearly 400 million in military aid to ukraine. That aid was released after the complaint became public in september. Foxs kevin cork says it comes as they get set for a new phase of the impeachment inquiry. Were going to hear from three democrat witnesses, only one republican witness. Theyre talking about a fair process. I dont see anything thats fair. Reporter republicans already calling the next phase of the house impeachment inquiry unfair, even though the house judiciary is still days away from taking over the process. Chairman nadler announcing tuesday the committee will hold its first public hearing next week, inviting President Trump and his lawyers to participate. The white house responding in a statement that its currently reviewing chairman nadlers letter, but what is obvious to every american is that this letter comes at the end of an illegitimate sham partisan process. I think from the white house perspective, this is a moment to negotiate for access to everything, and then make sure they set rules that allow the white house and the house tness hearings. Reporter this as house committees release more transcripts of witness testimony, including that of mark sandy from the office of management and budget. Sandy testifying that two omb staffers resigned after expressing frustrations with the hold on military aid to ukraine. Meantime, democrats are seemingly split over whether censuring the president , as initially proposed by congresswoman Brenda Lawrence is an appropriate option. I think censure, while it may be easier, may be quicker, falls short of what our responsibility actually is. Reporter with the hearing scheduled for december 4th, democrats are hoping to have this wrapped up with a vote before christmas, which could set the stage for an all Important Senate trial sometime in january. Alison rodriguez is joining us from where this latest incident happened. Reporter im told both of those volunteers are doing okay. But as you can understand, theyre pretty shaken up. Those thieves, making off with money that is meant to help those who live here in contra costa county. That first incident happened saturday, at a lucky supermarket in martinez. Police say the man came up to the volunteer bell ringer with a clipboard. The volunteer thought he was leaving the kettle in good hands. Little did he know, that man was an imposter, taking off with the money need. The second incident happened on tuesday at the hobby lobby on zillow pass. A woman was ringing the bell inside the store, when a man approached her, and threw some kind of greasy liquid on her, and took the kettle. One local Salvation Army leader says the loss means more than these crooks know. During november and december, its a big chunk for our money we get for the whole year. So that money, we make it stretch out until christmas comes the next year. Reporter that woman was rem real resolve to try to help here in the community. Now, the major went on to tell me that in his roughly 30 years of the kettle drive in various big cities, other states, this has never happened to him before. Hes just hoping the thieves will turn the kettles, and instead go to the Salvation Army for help if they need it. I reached out to martinez, and concord police. They tell me at this point, no suspects are in custody, and they do not believe these incidents are related. Salvation army leaders say they didnt have to talk about safety concerns before, but now that is something that may change. Reporting live in concord, ktvu, fox 2 news. Hard to believe someone would do that. San jose is marking a milestone on this thanksgiving day. Putting the finishing touches on 32 tiny homes. Each home is 8200 square feet. This is really important. Were trying to demonstrate that these tiny Home Communities can work, that they can be good neighbors, because obviously, we need many more than just this particular community of 40 tiny homes. We have another one under construction now. We want to have many more of these throughout the city, so we can get more of our homeless neighbors off the street. The first 40 residents will move into these new homes by the middle of next month. A Second Community will begin occupancy early next year. Thousands are enjoying a thanksgiving meal today, as sara reports, its all thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. Reporter when Michael Schwartz fell on hard times, Redwood Gospel Mission was there to pick him up. They gave something to me that i can never pay for. Reporter he is joined by his daughter, and 600 other volunteers at the Sonoma County fair grounds. They help prepare food for the great thanksgiving banquet. More than 5,000 people in need will be served a holiday meal. People can also get a haircut, be checked out by a doctor, and pick up a warm coat. We just want them to know that theyre loved, and that the community loves them. Reporter the community has really rallied around this event. Hundreds of coats collected for the banquets coat giveaway were stolen. But so many people stepped up to help. We put it out on social media, and just had an amazing response from the community. So much so that we had more coats coming in than we were expecting. Reporter its that kind of support everybody at this banquet is thankful for. Seeing the faces, and connecting with the people. And seeing smiles on kids faces, thats what its about. Reporter theres still time to come out here. Volunteers will be serving meals here until 7 00 tonight. At the Sonoma County fair ground, ktvu, fox 2 news. Coming up here on the 4, snowy holiday in the sierra. After the break, a live report on the conditions near lake tahoe. And in bay area weather, still tracking scattered showers across the region. Coming up, more on your thanksgiving forecast, and possibly another potent storm that arrives this weekend. Beverly ski resort in lake tahoe opened its doors today, just in time for thanksgiving. The resort says it got 11 inches of snow from this latest storm, and other areas got more than a foot. Heavenly isnt the only resort opening up for the season. Today, squaw valley, and Alpine Meadows opened their slopes as well. Reporter max reznick joins us. Reporter good evening, we want to give you an update on the conditions here in soda springs. Right now, were experiencing the most consistent snowfall weve experienced all day. The winds still light at this point, so thats a good thing in terms of the weather out here, but as you can see, interstate 80, talking with chp truckee, they were working an accident just near borial. They were holding traffic, now traffic is moving once again. Theyve allowed traffic to keep moving. But as you can see, very slowly at this point. If you are traveling, if you have to travel, youll want to take it slow. Caltrain moving shoulder to shoulder. Weve seen plows moving in and out of the kingvale station. Chp truckee says its responded to 30 crashes and spinouts today. At last check, from chp gold run. Thats an area that covers from colfax which has responded to seven crashes today. Thats far fewer than we saw yesterday. The roads for the most part havent been too bad, but we are seeing the conditions change right now. The wind, not as bad today either. Do not get on the road unless you absolutely have to. Look for those breaks in the weather as an opportunity to drive over the summit. Another important reminder today from chp, and from caltrans. You want to make this trip, you want to be prepared. That means coming with a full tank of gas. Water in your car as well. And make sure you have some nonperrishable food in case you get stuck. Ktvu, fox 2 news. That is all very good advice, max, we appreciate it. I dont think anyone wants to be at interstate 80 behind max. That traffic just crawling along, in all of that snow. Max, thank you. Bringing it back home to the bay area. Take a look at this beautiful live picture. You can see traffic below also at a crawl there, it looks like. A lot of people obviously heading to their destinations, ahead of thanksgiving tomorrow. Lets bring in mark for an update on what you can expect today and tomorrow. Today is one of those deals i woke up to one text that said its sunny in my neighborhood, and another says its pouring. It just shows how things were changing rapidly. Heres our live camera looking out toward the bay. Still some lingering showers across portions of the bay area. As we come in closer to the sierra, they still have the winter storm warning for lake tahoe. Just kind of checking out, sampling some of the snow reports. You can see 11 inches reported this morning around the lake, and this is closer to truckee, around 7 inches reported this morning. The winter storm warning in place until 4 00 tomorrow afternoon. Then on the way home, we could be talking about a winter storm watch, that begins later in the day saturday afternoon, into sunday. That could soon turn into a winter storm warning. The way back for the mountain could be a challenge as well. Heres the satellite, and radar. The snow showers out toward the sierra. We sill have lingering rain showers here in the bay area. In fact, as you can see closer to the east bay, you saw that live shot with alison in the concord area. We downpours. Once again, we talked about this in the first, we were on low snow levels. You can pick out some of the coverage, closer to alamo, antioch, moving it around. It looks like we have a cell just approaching the union city area, right around fremont, and the santa cruz mountains, we still have showers around 17. As you know, it is very chilly. Current numbers in the 40s. The cool spots, the cold spots overnight. Into the upper 20s, first thing tomorrow morning. A live camera looking toward alcatraz this afternoon. Weve been talking so much about the Current System it looks like another system sets up into the weekend, and into next week. Look at these numbers. A lot can change between now and then. You can see these numbers really adding up. Were not just talking about a quarter of an inch. Possibly over 1 to 2 inches into next week. Here is the cold pattern, setting up. There is still a slight chance of a few showers in your thanksgiving forecast. For the most part, we will have improving conditions tomorrow. It will be chilly. Then we have this weekend system setting up, what is called an atmospheric river. This could be at least a weak one setting up into the weekendment maybe some more heavy rain into monday. So we still have to iron out the details between now and then. Heres the forecast model. This is tomorrow morning. This still keeps a chance of a few scattered showers in your thanksgiving forecast. This is friday morning. Still a slight chance as well. But youll notice a lot of dry areas, and also some breaks in the clouds. Saturday, saturday morning starts out dry. Things quickly change by saturday afternoon, as that next system approaches our coastline. Highs tomorrow will be in the upper 40s, to the lower 50s, so a very chilly thanksgiving. Slight chance on friday, then keep on those rain clouds into next week. It looks like last week we were just hoping for a big rain cloud to get rid of a fire danger. Things really changing quite a bit over the next few days. Boy did they, thanks mark. There may be some relief in sight for the bay areas tight Housing Market, and its all because of baby boomers vacating their homes. A new survey from zillow predicts a huge turnover in homes over the next two decades. Jeff, thanks for coming on here. How do you anticipate baby boomers affecting the Housing Stock . Particularly here in the bay area . Reporter yeah, so right now, over half of the homes in the u. S. Are owned and occupied by people aged 50 and over. Thats a lot of baby boomers. And what we are projecting, as baby boomers get older, they move off to Nursing Homes or pass away, were going to see about a quarter of all homes a slightly less than that, a very similar number, about one fourth of homes in the bay area, will be vacated by folks much longer thwe see a signific increase in the supply of homes for sale . This is going to be a gradual ramp up in terms. Number of homes vacated by folks every year. This is really not a short term release. We know the bay area has the most expensive housing in the country. It is the tightest Housing Market in the country right now. So this is still a bit over the horizon. Were thinking about short term. Where do you expect most of these homes that will be vacated by baby boomers to be here in the bay area . And are these going to be places that the Younger Generation is going to want to live . Yeah, there were a couple interesting findings here. We found the area with the most hovacated by older folks isactually in walnut creek. But there are some surprising results as well. Chinatown, and northeast right in the heart of San Francisco, also has quite a few homes that will be vacated. Im sure that will be a popular destination for young folks who are working in the city. Broadly were also seeing most of the west bank. Mountain view, san mateo, these are places with a fair number of older folks. Many of whom bought their home quite a while ago, and most of them will be coming back on the market. Why do you think it is in the bay area and in california, we have so many baby boomers reluctant to leave their homes . I think theres no getting around the fact that prop 13 is a factor here. It does, you know, it prevents older folks from getting priced out of their homes by rising property taxes. Theyre not part of that modern economy with wages keeping up with the very, very high property values. One affect is he stay in their homes longer. That also does mean that there are a lot of older folks who bought a while ago. More homes coming on the market, but we might have to wait just a bit. A bit of good news on the horizon for us. Jeff tucker from zillow, thanks for being here. Thanks for having me on. Several people injured after a Chemical Plant explosion in texas. Its like the whole house was shaking.
