On with my photographer who can make anything work. Here we are driving on interstate 880, we are going to the city. We will explain whats happening coming up. But lets get to the traffic. It is a little better than it was the first four days of the week. As a matter of fact, weve had some really challenging commutes, i dont know if you remember tuesday or wednesday, it might seem like a long time ago now, but we have a lot of slow traffic, its more like a half hour delay between the courteous and the macarthur. When you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a delay. Traffic is moving along relatively well. Well talk more about the traffic coming up. We begin with the magnitude 8. 1 earthquake that struck parts of mexico and other countries in central america. Mexicos president is calling it the largest earthquake to strike his country and the century. At least 32 people are dead. Government officials are warning the dental could be much higher as rescue crews locate people buried under collapsed buildings. A closer damage a closer look at the damage. But you can see why weve been mullet dose monitoring the developments. At the epicenter of the earthquake is just off the coast near all three countries in the region. We are getting a better sense of the devastation left by last night quick. The quick centered in the Pacific Ocean south of the state of chiapas struck at 11 49 thursday night. Power was cut off to more than 1. 8 Million People. Buildings swayed and electricity was knocked out in parts of the capital city. Mexican president Henrique Pena Nieto says its the strongest quake to strike mexico in nearly 100 years. The quick and the 1980s killed 10,000 people. Were getting word from individual state governors reporting and on casualties from mexico. The latest reports are that there have been 32 people confirmed dead, many of them coming from the Southern States of Chiapas Oaxaca and tabasco. Mexican authorities issuing preliminary ports of one death and damage to cities and villages along the Mexican Border. The quake struck just as mexican emergency agencies are preparing for hurricane katia to hit mexico. It is expected to be a category two storm and should make landfall saturday. Thats the same date we are expecting irma to impact miami. The usgs has monitored at least a halfdozen aftershocks with magnitude 5. 2 or greater. Some of the measured as high as 5. 7. Weve also been monitoring developments coming out of el salvador. We are not getting any reports of major damage or injuries. We are getting some anecdotal stories from people reporting that there was some shaking in el salvador. They could tell that there was a quick, but again, at this point, no word on any major damage in el salvador. We will continue to follow development now that the sun is up and we get a better sense of how much damage has been done by this quick. Its stunning to understand how large of an area it impacted. If you can look at it, you can see on the map and get a sense just how far, i dont know if we can bring the map back up, but if you bring it up, you can get a sense of how far the epicenter was from mexico city. Mexico city is there to the northwest of where the epicenter was, people in mexico city reported feeling strong shaking meanwhile Guatemala City to the east reported some damage but not as much as we are hearing clearly and again, those Southern States of mexico, Oaxaca Chiapas and tabasco. A lot of developments we need to follow throughout the day. We continue to follow the latest surrounding Hurricane Irma as it continues to make its way right toward the florida coast. Heres a look at the damage so far from saint maarten, the u. S. Virgin islands to the dominican republic. The storm has already left an entire path of destruction. More about a data breach involving equifax. Hundred and 43 million americans had their information hacked including Social Security numbers. Reporter atlantabased equifax discovered a Cyber Security incident on july 29 but they didnt make it public until 40 days later. The company is stating criminals exploited a u. S. Website application vulnerability to get access to certain files, files that included personal information, names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and drivers licenses exposing the data of 143 Million People in the united states. The breach isnt surprising because the credit agencies are the mother load of sensitive information. They are being targeted, its the nightmare, but its the best thing for hackers to do. Reporter armed with all the information for Identity Theft, the goal for cyber thieves is to sell the information for profits. They will be able to sell the information in the black market. They will make a lot of money on it. Who knows what they will use the money for. Reporter from mid may to july, hackers accessed credit card number is for 209,000 customers and documents with personally identifying information for 182,000 consumers. The company says there is no evidence of unauthorized activity on its core credit reporting databases. The equifax ceo addressed the breach on youtube. This is clearly a disappointing event and one that strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do. I deeply regret this incident. I apologize to every affected consumer and all of our partners. Reporter concerns are going over a breach of this large scale and not knowing who has the information and what it will be used for. Its scary because anyone who has applied for a home loan or car loan, or wanted their credit score checked, they are vulnerable. The Cyber Security is a big issue and i think we need to take it more seriously as a nation. Reporter the only real protection consumers can do is to be vigilant and monitor closely to make sure your information has been compromised. For everyday consumers, we have to check very carefully and regularly our credit cards statement, bank statement. For more on the breach and to find out if your information was about, go to our website tran02. Com and click on web links. Will dive more into this topic later. Also Sal Castaneda has hit the road and is taking traffic on the road. Reporter thats right. We are on the road and coming up on the bay bridge. We are on the eastern span coming up on treasure island. I will say there was about a 15 minute delay on the toll plaza, but now once you get onto the bridge, you can see traffic is moving smoothly at 50 Miles Per Hour or better. For some, driving into the city, we are just about to go into treasure island. We do want to mention that we are looking at east bay commutes. We are starting with highway 24 through lafayette. A little overcast, but you can see that the traffic is going to be a little bit slow here. It is better today than the first four days of the week. Still some slowing there as you drive through. We went to the toll plaza and i will show it to you again. At the toll plaza commute is backed up. It is backed up to about the maze. Its still better than it was yesterday. Also, were looking at san jose. Want to go to the maps now, we want to show you that 101 is very slow drought driving up to Mountain View because of a accident near Moffett Field. Some of the other roots are blocked but i would avoid 101 out of san jose into sunnyvale. Lets go to Steve Paulson with the cloudy weather. We do have a big change here. Remember one week ago, it was warmer, wasnt it . Sure was. Temperatures hit recordsetting territory. Our absorber Observer Says last friday was 105. 3. It dropped to 71 yesterday. Both my gauges read 109. The Weather Service rounds up. We will round up 110. It dropped 40 degrees for some. In a wicca, santa rosa did. They were at barely 70 yesterday. I enjoyed the commute home yesterday on highway 175 from lake county to Mendocino County into some fog. Yesterday a couple things were going on. We had the lowest eject out. That also enhanced the low cloud deck and there were some low systems moving through which gave us a light rain also the drizzle. There were some decent amounts for what that system was which wasnt very strong. It was still enough to cool us down. Very strong thunderstorms continue. Very close to las vegas. That will continue through the weekend. They have a Flash Flood Watch through monday. If you are heading to las vegas, keep that in mind. We will have more on this in 10 minutes, but it looks like some tracks will take it in. A little westward tilt or shift if you will of irma. Its a category for north west at 40 miles an hour. Would love more at the bottom of the hour. A really good fog bank with some holes. Most regions stay cloudy to mostly cloudy. 60s on the temperatures but for the first time in a long time, some of the temperatures are in the upper 50s are low 60s and are running significantly cooler. While the humidity is still there, the cooler temperatures make it, they dont feel as bad and a lot of the tropical cloud deck has moved out of the picture. One locate them, but look at the fog, and looks like its coming back monday and tuesday for another round of clouds and maybe some more scattered showers. 60s 70s 80s on the temperatures. Near average for this time of year, it should be about 8586 for livermore and 74 San Francisco. We are right in there, near 80 arose to san jose. All pretty close within a degree or two. Temperatures will warm up for the weekend and next week, cooler and breezy out of the northwest. If thats the case, that will drop the humidity. That will get rid of the smoke. The smoke wont be as bad as it was. Its been lingering and hanging around. A state of emergency declared in parts of california. Will have the rest coming up next. Including the challenges fire crews are facing across the state. North korea could launch another Intercontinental Ballistic Missile as early as tomorrow. More on where the Hurricane Irma made landfall and the expanded evacuations in florida. First Hurricane Harvey, now Hurricane Irma, life pictures as we explain how local National Guardsmen plan to protect people in florida in preparation for the storm there. It is going to be a little bit slow in some areas still as you drive through city streets and also a look at interstate 80 880 slowing a little bit. Lots of fog and low clouds on friday, its a cooler friday compared to last friday. We will see if there is warmer weather on the weekend. Ah, dinner. Throughout history, the one meal when we come together, break bread, share our day and connect as a family. [ bloop, clicking ] and connect, as a family. Just, uh one second voice guy. [ bloop ] huh . Hey . I paused it. Bam, family time. So how is everyone . Find your awesome with xfinity xfi and change the way you wifi. We continue to track Hurricane Irma. Steve paulson here to dive into what has changed since yesterday morning. Irma is now a four not a five. It could go back stronger, its on a borderline, its around the top. Some of the outer bands are over cuba and that may be taking energy out of it. But this is we did, it looks like the i is strengthening. It may be a higher end of category form, but there are some warm water. We will show you that, theres a possibility of that. Already Fort Lauderdale 24, marathon, this is the area. I think key west a marathon, theres also a marine traffic which shows all the ship traffic. The amount of ships cargo ships trying to get out is a mad scramble. You are starting to see that already as people prepare for that, but keep an eye on it. Miami to marathon to key west, marathon to key west, that is the key. You can see the eye as it goes over the parts of cuba it loses some energy but theres nothing to stop it. Its going west northwest at 17, eventually it has to take the turn thats when it will get caught up, theres an area of low pressure forming over the u. S. That will start to draw that out. Has the track changed much . A changed it had a little wobble yesterday. It took a dip but now is still moving west northwest, it flows around the bermuda High Pressure. That acts like a guardrail. It wont let it go anywhere until it reaches the western edge of that, then it is under other influences like systems coming down from the united dates here. But the water temp all of this, that is 86 degrees. Ive been told there are some 87 degrees water which is absolutely warm fuel for that. It is now moving at 40 miles an hour and 150 Miles Per Hour winds. It is moving at 14 miles an hour. I think this is the european model, it will go right appear. The key is, look where it goes. If it comes up here, you are still talking 100 mileperhour winds up to tampa and jacksonville. This is the National Hurricane center plot track. Eventually gets up there, you are still talking 70 75 mile perhour plus wins. Its still a category four. Category four is still catastrophic. The storm surges, the Little Island that it hit, the storm surge is used for the harbor, thats used for boats in the harbor, when you are in the u. S. , youre talking over land, when it comes ashore, you are talking 10 to 12 feet. Thats higher than i can reach with my head. Thats what they are concerned about and florida. The heaviest wind is in the right front quadrant. Thats where miami would be. If this comes in around marathon or key west which would put miami right in some of the strongest winds, but the surgeon rainfall, all of that is coming together and it looks like late saturday sunday. I know youve been watching it and will stay on top of it. Sal castaneda on the road this morning. We are on the road in San Francisco and looking firsthand at some of the slow traffic here on 280 northbound. The extension getting off at mariposa street, we are going to a new name bus yard to show you what muni has in store for their 100 year celebration. In the meantime, will take a look at some of the commutes. If you are on interstate 80, if youve done it the first four days of this week, you will notice a big improvement today. It is going to be slow, but it will be not as slow as it was on tuesday and wednesday. The traffic is also going to be so slow at the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see the traffic has backed up. Theres no problem once you make it onto the span, but there will be some slowing on the bridge approach, and this morning, san jose and south bay really has been slower than we thought it would be. An earlier accident, Mountain View on one away, i would recommend 101 n. Bound from san jose to Mountain View, i would use 85 or use some of the expressways. Now lets go back to the desk. At least 20 people have died as a result of Hurricane Irma so far. The storm is downgraded late last night to a category four but is still Strong Enough to potentially become one of the worst National Natural disasters in u. S. History. More than half 1 Million People in southern part of florida have been ordered to leave as irma gets closer. It has already caused widespread destruction in the caribbean. While many people are evacuating southern florida, there are some people who have decided to stay put. Joining us on the phone this morning sure enoch bar, you are in miami, youve been impacted by the storm tells what you are seeing theres been a lot of long lines for gas, for plywood, that sort of thing. The lines have started to diminish a little bit now that a lot of people have left the area. A lot of people have gotten stuck in gridlock in central and north florida as they are trying to flee the state. Unfortunately and fortunately, i am not one of those people. I will be working for the storm. Its a nerveracking down here. Thats for sure. Are you hearing about shelters in the area miami, Fort Lauderdale, are they open . Reporter yes. Weve actually had multiple shelters already filled to capacity in the storm is not going to be hitting until tomorrow. Some of them filled up as early as yesterday evening. They are starting to open more and more shelters. Are they high schools . Can you describe what the shelters are . Reporter mostly they are schools. Thats correct. There are only a couple pet friendly ones, but i know at least one pet friendly shelter has already filled to capacity and now they are trying to open another one so they can bring the pets. Sometimes, thats what keeps people from going to a selfish a safe shelter is that they dont want to leave their pets behind. As you are talking to us, we are seeing gridlocked traffic and florida, have you heard people say, im going to stay, im writing this one out . Reporter plenty. If you are in land more, sometimes, i would say, especially at this point, it is probably safer to be where you are. You dont want to be stuck in your car in the middle of a hurricane. Thats probably the worst place you can be. With the gridlocked traffic, people are running out of gas, then you are stuck on the side of the road. If you have left already, i would say, personally, i would say just to stay put. I would think that you are better off hunkering down and porting up your house if you havent left. Have you done that yourself . I know you are working in on the job, did you leave your house . Did you do any work to it . Reporter yes. I got some plywood to put up, i have a twostory house and i learned the hard way how hard it is to put plywood up on the second story. So my house is boarded up. Ive done the best i can do. I will be sleeping in our station. We already have our storm shutters closed up at the station. I have our air mass air mattress ready to go. Our station is actually on an island surrounded by water in the middle of a mandatory evacuation zone. But our building is very safe. Its solid concrete. I think we will be okay. Thank you for taking the time. Be safe this weekend. Thank you. A team of air National Guardsmen from the south they are heading into the path of the storm to help with rescues. Alex savidge is there with more on their mission. Reporter good morning. The members of the California Air National Guard once again answering the call to serve their country, they are heading up to florida today to help people caught in the path of Hurricane Irma. We are here at Moffett Field with a 129th rescuing is based. All morning long, weve watched as theyve loaded their clement and rescue boats onto planes. These are combat shadow aircraft. As you come up to the lefthand side, the first of the planes is just about to take off. You can see it on the tarmac waiting to head onto the runway to take off for florida. This rescuing, this specially trained unit has just returned from texas a matter of days ago. They are helping people who are stuck in or the flooding in Hurricane Harvey, and now again, they are right back to work days later. Of course it takes a toll on the service members. We had a chance to talk with the wife of one of the guardsmen who is leaving this morning heading off to florida after a stint in texas, she told us it is tough to see them go, but she is proud of the work he is going. We are really proud of them, its hard being a military spouse. But you are so proud of them for what they do. Especially when you hear the real world stuff, not just the training and diplomas, but the real life stuff to make a difference. Reporter this specially trained unit trains for search and rescue. They are leaving Moffett Field heading to florida today to help out in the aftermath of irma. 100 members of the National Guard are being deployed along with two rescue helicopters and to a three of these combat shadow aircraft. They also include the Guardian Angel para rescue men. They can pull people to safety following the storm. We have been trained multiple times over to be always ready, always there in any environment in any situation and with the assets and capabilities we bring to the table, it is a force multiplier for the rescue operations that will be taking place in florida. Reporter this unit spent five days in texas where they rescued or than 100 people from the floodwaters brought on by Hurricane Harvey. This morning, they are continuing to load up the aircraft. Two more of these combat shadow airplanes are going to be loaded up or have been loaded up and they will be taking off shortly from Moffett Field. Again, this crew is on its way to florida. They were had to hurl brookfield in north florida. They will stage there and get their orders from fema once the storm passes to the state. They will get the orders on where they are needed most and where people may need rescuing. This mission is openended. They dont know how long they will be there. Alex savidge be careful. Thank you. Jesse gary joins us live from san jose. Reporter we are talking about tsa workers, the federal workers who screen ticketed passengers through security so they can board their plans. Lets take a look at the video. Tsa workers from here at San Jose International and Oakland International airport are being repositioned at airports in the south seas to help the reopening process in florida airports. Hundreds of employees and florida are expected to be busy dealing with the aftermath. About 250 tsa workers here are now standing by. Teams are also being sent from sacramento, los angeles, san diego, boston, detroit, seattle, and salt lake city. All those teams are heading and preparing to help reopen the airports. You wont have that backup after the screening process. Remember the tsa workers are still working with problems in texas where Hurricane Harvey hit. Upwards of 200 tsa workers are dealing with damaged or destroyed homes. Workers in other parts of the country are still going there and staying there to help them get back on the field feet.
