At 5 02 lets go back to the desk. Developing news in san jose, the police there investigating a deadly stabbing. Detectives say they were called to lod way after 2 a. M. An argument was taking place near alum rock avenue. A man was stabbed pronounced dead there at the scene. Police are still searching for the attacker. A Hayward Police officer who was shot and killed on duty will be remembered today in a special memorial. That Service Getting underway at 10 00 this morning. As many as 8,000 people are expected to be on hand to pay their final respects to fallen hero Sergeant Scott lunger. Last night Alameda County deputies began patrolling hayward to free up Hayward Police officers so they could all attended tos services. Here is what we know so far about todays services. At 8 this morning, Hayward Police officers will gather together at Police Headquarters and begin making their way here to oracle arena. Theyre expected to be on hand around 9 this morning when the gates open to the public. Officers from around the bay area and around the country will be on hand to lend their support and pay their respects. The ceremony to honor Sergeant Lunger is expected to begin at 10 this morning and should last about two hours and following that ceremony there will be a helicopter flyover. After that Sergeant Lunger will then be taken to Union Cemetery for internment, and that will be a private event. Yesterday the public attended a viewing in hayward, and the police chief was on hand with an update on how Sergeant Lungers family is coping with this inexplicable loss. They are remarkable and beautiful inside and out, and theyre doing like everybody else is doing, one moment at a time, one breath at a time. Members of the community have been leaving flowers and toyings to express their grief. Adrian Jerry Gonzalez lured the 8yearold into his familys apartment on sunday, and according to charging documents he sexually assaulted her and killed her before putting her body in a dumpster. What authorities did not say is why. I can tell you this, people do things for lots of reasons. Sometimes we understand them, sometimes we dont. Adrian gonzalez is being charged as an adult. Legally he cannot face the Death Penalty because he is a minor but if convicted he could spend the rest of his life in prison two wildfires in lake county are close to merging into one huge fire. 3,000 acres have burned. 500 people had to evacuate. Flames are racing up the dry hillside. Overnight firefighters did their best to try to hold the fire lines to protect nearby homes. Cal fire says several outbuildings have been destroyed but they dont know the exact number because the flames have prevented them from getting a closer look. The mercury news reports an africanamerican couple is suing the San Jose Police department claiming that a Police Officer pulled a gun on them and their children for no reason. Emmanuel stevens says he was picking up their 7yearold daughter from school when the Police Officer followed them to their home. Stevens said the officer confronted them, drew his gun and handcuffed him. The lawsuit claims the officer cited stevens wife for possession of marijuana even though she has a prescription. The city of san jose has made no comment yet about that case. In Cincinnati Ohio prosecutors have filed murder charges against a White University of cincinnati Police Officer who shot and killed an africanamerican man during a traffic stop. It happened minutes after officer tensing pulled dubose over for not having a front license plate. The grand jury determined there was no reason for lethal force because the officers life was not threatened. The search for a San Francisco actually the San Francisco School District still needs 60 more teachers for the Academic Year that starts in less than three weeks. The district faces the same problems as others, baby boomer era teachers are retiring. A nationwide drop in the number of people entering the profession is hurting as well. A lack of housing that teachers can afford adds to the San Francisco districts prosthetic. District officials expect to fill the vacant seats before the school year starts. A piece of a wing that washed up on a Remote Island in the indian ocean. Our reporter doug luzader has more from washington. The australians who have been leading this search effort, and the search has been ongoing, think that even though theyve been searching in kind of this area closer to australia itself they think that where this debris was found on the other side of the indian ocean seems to make sense given ocean currents in that part of the world. The water logged debris washed ashore on the tiny island of reunion well over 3,000 miles away from kuala lumpur where malaysia air flight 370 took off last year bound for beijing. Despite the marine growth its a distinctive piece of evidence. Weve had sources where they were frantically looking at photos of this comparing it to diagrams of the aircraft, and they confirmed this is a 777. This is believed to be a flaperon a Control Surface from the wing of the aircraft. It does not appear to be mangled which could offer an important clue. The search has never stopped. Despite early reports of debris and oil slicks that turned out to be dead ends. The location of the debris near the coast of africa is consistent with the search area and the currents that investigators would expect, but tracing those currents back to a specific crash site may not be realistic. While it gives closure it doesnt really help us in refining the search area. Its such a long time ago. For the families of the 239 passengers and crew members lost on ma370, the find could help lead to some resolution. The other part is that, no, let it not be true because then we can still have hope that, you know, theres a chance that the plane is still out there and then they all can come home. Now while it appears that this debris did in fact come from the boeing 777, it is being sent to france for more analysis to see if it came from that missing malaysia airliner. Thank you. The minnesota dentist who killed a beloved lion in zimbabwe is now in hiding. Protestors have been gathering outside the office of dr. Walter palmer since he admitted to killing cecil the lion. He says that he hired local guides for what he thought was a legal hunt. Instead investigators say cecil was lured out of the game preserve where he lived and was killed. Palmer has temporarily closed his office because of the controversy and a number of angry reviews against the doctor have been posted on yelp. Three former university of virginia students filed a defamation lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine because of a controversial article that turned out to be false. Last year Rolling Stone published a story about an alleged gang rape by members of a fraternity at the university of virginia. That article was later proved false. Janine de la vega joins us from outside the courthouse where there are disturbing new details about this crime and that 15yearold suspect. Reporter pam, we expect to see 15yearold Adrian Gonzalez here in court when he appears for an arraignment at 8 30 this morning. He is going to on formally arraigned for the charge of murder, sexual assault, as well as kid kidnapping and a special circumstance of lying in wait. Now there is a good chance that a lot of locals are going to show up because this crime has just horrified the community. Police say that gonzalez seen in pictures from his Instagram Account lured 8yearold Maddy Middleton into his family apartment. According to newly filed charging documents he tied her up, sexually assaulted her and killed her before putting her body in a recycling dumpster. While the District Attorney announced gonzalez is being charged as an adult, he didnt elaborate on a motive for the murder. Gonzalez was set to start his sophomore year at santa cruz high school. A classmate described him as a joyful person who liked to do tricks with his yo yo. Maddy was supposed to start 4th grade. People continue to leave flowers for her at a memorial. I said a prayer that hopefully shes on to a better place and hopefully she didnt suffer. Its incredibly disturbing and incredibly upsetting and we cant explain it. Reporter grief counselors were at gonzalezs and maddys school yesterday, and they will be back again today to help children and parents cope with the tragedy. Gonzalez is in custody at the juvenile detention facility in felton. If convicted he could face life in prison. He cant legally face the Death Penalty because he is a minor. His Instagram Account has been removed from social media, but we will share something that he posted apparently after maddy disappeared. That is coming up at 6 a. M. Pam. All right. Our other big story this morning, a public funeral will be held for Hayward Police Sergeant Scott lunger who was killed last week in the line of duty. Sergeant lunger was gunned down last wednesday during a traffic stop. At 8 45 this morning, a police motorcade will escort his casket from the chapel of the chimes in hayward to oracle arena in oakland. A public funeral will be held there starting at 10 00 this morning. About 8,000 people are expected including Sergeant Lungers family, Police Officers from all over the country, and governor jerry brown. Sergeant lunger was 48 years old. He leaves behind two daughters, 19yearold sarah and 21year old ashton. Now i want to show you the procession route from chapel of the chimes to oracle arena. The procession will head north from the chapel on mission boulevard to foothill boulevard and then turn left on a street and then on to interstate 880 and then arrive at oracle arena. I got off the phone with cal fire who says the fire has now grown to 5,000 acres. They are continuing to battling this fire and evacuations as we mentioned remain in place. 500 people so far were forced to evacuate, and the evacuations remain in place for residents along noble ranch road, jerusalem grade road and spruce road north. That is the latest from cal fire this morning. Flames are racing up dry hillsides in an area an hour north of napa. Firefighters did the best they could to hold the fire lines and protect nearby homes. Cal fire says several outbuildings have been destroyed, but they really dont know the specific number because the flames have prevented them from getting a closer look. The triple digit temperatures, humidities in the teens, very dry fuel, steep terrain. Now once daylight comes this morning, air tankers will return over the fires and drop retardant and water. There are Evacuation Centers for people as well as their animals. Take a look at this photo of the fire. It was posted by a viewer on our Facebook Page last night. Came very close to that apartment complex in that area. Cal fire is calling it the rocky fire because flames were first spotted off rocky creek road. This fire sent giant plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen several miles away. I want to go to another perspective of the fire. Theres so much smoke. Its even being picked up on radar. This was a radar shot from the National Weather service. They posted this image of the fire as well. Cal fire says the train out terrain out there very rugged and Evacuation Center remains at Highlands Senior Center in clear lake. Well keep you updated throughout the morning on mornings on 2. This is a new satellite image taken an hour ago by the National Weather service. At the top of your screen you can see an arrow pointing to a small white spot of light. Thats the rocky fire. The other white spots in the middle thats the city lights around the bay area. Off to the right you often see a white spot. Thats the willow fire burning north of fresno. Theres a new oil slick off the coast of Santa Barbara who was first reported by kayakers who came back on shore with oil on their bodies and boats yesterday. A coast guard helicopter flew over the area near goleta beach. The sheen is approximately 3 miles long by about a half a mile wide with what we call sporadic coverage. So within that those dimensions i mentioned, 30 coverage of a light sheen. The coast guard is taking samples of the oil on the water, and they will use those samples to see if they can figure out where the oil is coming from. They dont believe that this is linked to the pipeline that broke in may. They do say there is natural oil seepage in the area from time to time. Time now 5 39. Thanks to an anonymous donation, Police Officers in stockton now are using body cameras. The Police Department want today get these cameras for years, but they never had enough money. After a donation of 300,000, all of the officers on the streets, theyre now outfitted with body cameras. Theyre turned on whenever officers come into contact with someone. Police say this will help protect people on both sides of that camera. They work to protect the officers as well and the frivolous complaint that might come in that was completely untrue, well now have some evidence against that. Stockton is the latest Police Department to start using body cameras after the protests over Police Brutality around the country. California senators have introduced an emergency bill to help communities deal with the drought. The measure proposes spending 700 million to build new reservoirs. It could also help provide Emergency Water where its needed. Meantime a majority of californians say they believe Climate Change is having an effect on the drought. 79 of those who responded to the Public Policy Institute Poll say Global Warming is a serious threat to our way of life. This all comes out as Governor Brown is pushing for tougher Climate Change standards after taking part in that Climate Summit at the vatican. The city of benicia is turning to Older Technology to help save water. Its hired a company to find underground leaks. Matt baker is a Field Technician who just uses headphones and a high powered microphone to listen for leaks. The equipment he uses can actually detect leaking water 3 blocks away. Heres what hes listening for. Water escaping at a High Pressure through a hole in there and that is is whats creating the noise. Water coming out of the ground is pretty obvious but leaks dont always surface and thats what were here for. The city of benicia hired Bakers Company to check all 160 miles of pipes in the town and work started last year. So far more than 100 leaks have been found and city leaders there estimate that they are already saving 20,000 gallons of fresh water a day. Wow. So imagine multiply that out to all the cities where there could be water leaking. Wow, okay. 5 42, still ahead, the contract battle between the tentative deal that was reached after all the outrage over a controversial morality clause. But first the search continues for a bay area teacher missing in the El Dorado National forest. The new tool being used to help the California National guard find him. Welcome back, the search efforts continue this morning in the El Dorado National forest for a missing teacher from San Francisco. For the First Time Ever the California National guard is actually using a drone to help in the search efforts. The drone will collect images in realtime allowing searchers to cover more ground. 45yearold Edward Cavanaugh went missing 12 days ago. He was last seen driving a motorcycle on a trail through the El Dorado National forest. Cleanup continues this morning after a train derailed in Sacramento County yesterday. A 75car Union Pacific Freight Train was in the town of gult on its way to illinois. It stopped abruptly. 14 cars left the tracks. The tracks are damaged and train parts are scattered next to a cornfield. That train was not carrying anything hazardous, just some Consumer Products including cases of champagne. The area is one of Union Pacifics busiest rail lines. You can see anywhere between 15 to 20 trains going through this area per day within a 24 hour period. Until the tracks are repaired, all the trains will be rerouted. Time is 5 46. New this morning, one mans attempt to swim from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Farallon Islands has ended. His name is simon dominguez. He hoped to become the first person to complete that swim against the current. It ended last night because a great white shark was spotted just 3 1 2 miles from his goal. His daughter saw that 15foot great white circling the boat and swimming towards her dad. The farallons are a greeing ground for great white sharks. Engineers say a section of track needs to be completely rebuilt on the oakland side between the tube and the west oakland station. Extra ac transit buses and ferries will help people get across the bay. A second closure of the transbay tube, that is scheduled for labor day weekend. You can tell its kind of slowing down on highway 4 coming up to the concord area. When you get to highway 24 and 6680 its okay. Bay bridge toll plaza is backed up now. The metering lights are on and its backed up to the macarthur maze. This is about a 15 to 20 minute delay and traffic is moving along okay. In san jose northbound 280 as you get to highway 17, that traffic is going to be okay, and there are no problems on 101 or no problems on 85 either. I wanted to let you know, steve, that i just noticed that its darker later in the morning. I just remembered that at 5 48 maybe about a month ago it was already light.
