For your money. The price war has begun. Target now lowering prices on 1000 items in an effort to attract more customers during the summer months. I did to help those dealing with the effects of inflation all while drawing shoppers away from rival walmart. Shelby nelson has that story for us. Walmart and target some of the biggest retailers and theyre competing for your business. Im glad theyre going into competition even more. What that means, more deals. I think its great. I think, you know. They just today Target Corporation announced that it is slashing prices on about 5,000 items from soda to milk bread, produce pet food and diapers. All get even more here. I guess our rents keep going up. And i cant afford to survive anymore. Upland resident Richard Martin only shops and walmart because he says its all he can afford. Same goes for his mom. Donna, who came here for groceries. So were looking at the red right now. Im looking at the 100 whole wheat. And here at walmart, its for 24. So its about 0. 35 more for the war we here at this target. But i do see a deal for daves killer bread. Some items at walmart or less expensive bananas, on the other hand, were cheaper of target. I was at walmart not too long ago and i felt like i spent more on all the things i have bought the to hear the price wars between retail giants are giving consumers an edge. So why the sudden cuts to rake in customers . What were seeing right now is basically a response to years of high inflation. So for many consumers, especially those living paycheck to paycheck. This is an untenable situation and they are cutting back on their spending. And that is whats freaking out. Retailers already, walmart has announced its own aggressive price cuts and to compete. Target has now stepped up with a new multipronged price cut strategy. Inflation slightly cooled last month after being unexpectedly high from january to march. While Consumer Prices rose 0. 3 from march to april. Last says its all about getting you in the door, even if these big box retailers have to take a loss on certain items. At this point, its all about volume. The more people you can get into the store, the more chances you have of making sales. So even though milk butter and other such products might become less leaders at this point. Once they have you in there, theyre hoping that they can attract with maybe some other discretionary purchases. Well, that was Shelby Nelson reporting for us this morning.
