Senate during 1992 socalled year of the woman making california the first state in the nation to have 2 female u. S. Senators taking on the gun lobby would be a whole marker for 3 decades careers. I am quite familiar with firearms. I became mayor is a product of assassination. Im aware sound my assassinated colleague and put a fingers through a in a 1994. A her assault wespons ban was passed. Senator, i know something about what firearms condition after the ban sunset in 2004 feinstein repeatedly tried to get another assault weapons ban passed. But as congress became more polarized, she failed to win support. It exempts 2000, 271 weapons. Is this at a for the people in the United States that will moderate democrat feinstein championed an offshore Oil Drilling Ban after the bp oil spill in 2010. Were here to announce this band that would permanently. Ban all new offshore oil drilling in federal waters all along. The west coast, she was also behind the california desert protection act, which among other things designated death valley and joshua tree as national parks, though, few by some as a late convert to support same marriage. She spoke in favor repealing the defense of marriage act in 2011. You know, have a bill that strikes doma that says if a state takes action to legalize same marriage, then that is a valid marriage. And the federal governments that the federal benefits that would a crew to any other couple would accrue to a same couple chair of the Senate Intelligence committee. She called for an investigation into the cia torture tactics in relation to 9. 11 detainees. Later in 2016 is the ranking democrat on the committee. Feinstein called for an investigation into how Russian Hackers impacted the election that brought donald trump to power. I think its necessary that we come to grips with this. I think its necessary. That there be a real investigation in 2017, feinstein became the top democrat on the Senate Judiciary committee when it held hearings, son Neil Gorsuchs nomination to the Supreme Court once a hotly contested issue. Is no longer a hotly contested issue. We move forward. Feinstein foretold the future when she said she would support gorsuch and warned he would vote to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. He wrote that he believes there are no exceptions. To the principal that, quote, the intentional taking of a human life by private persons is always wrong. End quote, this language has been interpreted by both prolife and prochoice organizations to mean he would overturn roe. In 2018 at the age of 85 feinstein faced are greatest challenge for office. She squared off against fellow Democrat Los Angeles state senator Kevin De Leon who said it was time for a change. Many agreed with feinstein getting reelected with just 54 of the vote in our final term in office ended up being quite a challenge following the divisive twentytwenty confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett feinsteins competency was called into question for this comment. This has been one of the best set of hearings that ive participated in in february of 2022. Feinsteins husband to 40 years. Richard bluhm. Died of cancer in just 2 months later for a name. Senators called feinsteins fitness into question in the San Francisco chronicle article saying her memory was rapidly deteriorating. The 88 yearold feinstein, who is by this point, the old a sitting u. S. Senator responded with a list of recent achievements. And in a statement, she said the real question is whether im still an effective representative for 40 million californians and the record shows i am. California needs a warrior in washington in january of 2023. To California DemocraticCongressmembers Katie Porter and adam schiff both announced they would run for Feinsteins Senate seat, pressed about her future. Feinstein remained unsure. I think people should they want run. For me, i but a little over 2 weeks later in february, feinstein issued a statement saying she would not run for reelection but with serve out her term which ends in 2024. Dan kerman kron, 4 news and senator feinstein pave the way for countless women to get into politics as the first female. Mayor of San Francisco where now right now hearing from the current female mayor, San Francisco, london breed offering some live remarks. Lets join are now Dianne Feinstein wanted to make sure that we showed tremendous support and respect for an iconic that rant mode of transportation in San Francisco and work with both the public and private sector to raise the necessary funds to save our cable cars with so many visitors continue to enjoy in San Francisco. You cant think about San Francisco without thinking about Dianne Feinstein and how she has consistently then a champion for people for neighborhoods, for bridge building for all the things that have made our city such an incredible city over the years. Just also take us back. I was a kid. I was excited about playing for Dianne Feinstein, the mayor of San Francisco, the first woman mayor of San Francisco. I was in the Ben Franklin Middle School band. I played french horn. And we work so hard to get ready to play for her right here at city hall. We were known as Dianne Feinsteins bay. Any time there was any event activity or what have you. Basically were chosen. As the band to perform for any occasion. And i remember begging my grandmother, begging her to get me some new pantyhose. I remember begging my grandmother for something new to look nice for the mayor. She in fact. But the band sweaters that we wore that day, the ban sweaters that we wore so proudly and there was a level of pride to beat in front of the mayor to watch the mayor. Witness us play and to be she was so proud of us. And she said so as she took the time to talk to us express how amazing we were. And to remind us that we were her band. Jack martin was our conductor. He was our teacher. He was our friend. Loved her. So. And in fact, when the fortyniners won the super bowl and she loved the San Francisco fortyniners, they have a big celebration at the fairmont hotel. And you know that the Franklin Middle School band was right there to play for her. She stopped by to say hi to us. She made sure she brought over joe montana. And let me tell you, that was one of the best moments of my life. I still remember it today. Growing up in San Francisco. She was always someone we looked up to so much so that when she ran for senator, we helped in her campaign. I remember doing all the loads and doing whatever it took to was the first woman to really step out and to do this extraordinary work both as president of the board of supervisors mayor of San Francisco as the senator for the state of california. And just last night she was on the senate floor casting votes because she truly believe doing her duty being an extraordinary public servant. And it is clear, does she care about making a difference in the lives of so many . One of the first things that she did when she was on. The when she began to serve as a u. S. Senator, we were experiencing in 1992 the tragedy of what happened with 101, california and the work that she did to get an Assault Rifle ban in place was extraordinary. Very especially at that time. She did it because she knew how important it was. She was constantly courageous and she continued to push the envelope. Build relationships across the aisle. She worked hard to work with other people because ultimately she wanted to accomplish things. She is truly a role model. She is an amazing individual. And so many of us, especially in the city county of San Francisco will miss her dearly. It wasnt just because of the work she did. It was because of the love and the compassion that she share for so many people. And before i open it up to questions, ill just say. You know, Diane Feinstein never stop mayor. Whether she was calling me. To ask for something to be done are calling my chief of staff ellsberg, who used to work for her. Any little thing was not too little for Dianne Feinstein. If there was something wrong with a sidewalk, a corner and issue, it did not matter. She took the time because she cared so deeply about seeing San Francisco look and feel good and wanted to make sure that what were doing here on the local level. Was it a great example . Now to make significant changes . And she wanted us to make those changes and make let San Francisco look and feel good for everyone who was a part of the fabric of San Francisco. I also want to say that she built so many extraordinary relationships, international relationships. You made San Francisco international destination. In fact, the shanghai sister city relationship. Senator Dianne Feinstein develop that along with other sister city relationships to recognize the diversity and how important it is to bridge the gap between communities in our city. I can go on and on about how so many of the things that she did here locally as mayor set the tone for what San Francisco has become and will continue to be a beacon of hope for so many people for years to come. And so i want to again, thank you all for being here recognize senator Dianne Feinstein and her legacy in San Francisco. We are again honoring her by lowering the flags at half mast. We will have a condolence book on the 4th floor at noon for people who want to visit and signed the book and pay their respects. We will share that book with the public and we will share that book with her family. And we are not aware of the specifics as it relates to her services. But we will definitely provide that information as soon as it is made available to us. So again, thank you all for being to listen here with the words current mayor london breed in San Francisco, one of the countless women. Who rose to politics because of dying by side and her talking about. Being in the band as a kid it was a son and now shes the mayor and on and on and personal stories that people are sharing this seem to be hitting the hardest as we reflect and remember on the life and legacy of senator Dianne Feinstein. We know Michael Thomas has been out in the streets talking to people getting their reactor hearing stories from people that newer and felt the same way. Lets listen. Michael, what what have you heard lately . Well, devastation really is what ive been hearing as the announcement of senator feinsteins death was announced this morning. People telling me theyve got a heavy heart as theyre walking in to get a copy. And many women telling me just a major impact that shes had on them as young girls growing up here in the bay. Take a look. This is footage we have of the senator over the years. One woman tells me she remembers being around 8 years old and senator feinstein becoming acting mayor others tell me its the year 1992 when they were in college. And remember being part of her senate run and we even spoke with one woman who says while she didnt always agree with the senators policies shows respected her, the work she did and the doors she opened for women everywhere. We actually were not on the same page. But of course, im very sad that as especially when its woman. Weve been in politics and in government long as she has, you know, and then everything that she other people tell me they remember growing up in her having rallies and being so impactful in the community. And again, the best word to describe it is devastation this morning. Thats a very latest the south bay. Im michael send it back to you to live in the studio. Thanks a lot. Michael. All right. Its 9. 16 right now. We want to get back to our coverage of the passing of u. S. , senator Dianne Feinstein, the oldest sitting senator who just castor last vote as a senator yesterday and died at the age of 90 in dc last night her home there. In our last segment we visited with kron fours Michael Thomas. He was out on the streets getting peoples reaction. Up now we want to visit with our own Tiffany Justice is actually in front of Dianne Feinsteins home in lot of people have been paying their respects there this morning. Tiffany. All right. Many people paying their respects right in front of her home. We had one female stopping by to lay a beautiful bouquet of red flowers right at the front gate. Many people walking by taking off their hat. As they pass by Dianne Feinstein served 6 terms as United States senator for california after winning a special election back in 1992. She had a lengthy political crew which reached many levels of State Government to 1969. She ran for the San Francisco board of supervisors and one. Serving as the first president of the board female president of the board in 1978 before becoming a senator. She served 3 terms as mayor of San Francisco from 1978, 88. And during this time there was a lot of turmoil with the assassination of mir georges county and city supervisor harvey milk that drew National Attention to francisco. Find sine city muskogee as mayor becoming the first woman to serve in that position. He ran for governor in 1990. The campaign was not successful, but she later did run for us for a seat on the u. S. Senate. Want to find signs most significant legislative accomplishments is believed to be during her earlycareer when the Senate Approved her amendment to ban manufacturing of cells of certain types of assault weapons. In 1994. And amid some Health Concerns in twentytwenty, she decide to step down as top democrat on the Judiciary Panel after the 2020 elections when we use are speaking to several people who have walked by paying respect, respect for the senator. We know that she created a lot of lasting memories with the community. My son was playing right in front of her house and she came out in a track suit with their little dog. And she said i saw come to the side of my my view i she said, excuse me, is that your son . And i said yes, i realized, oh, its the senator, senator feinstein. So mess and get as i said. And introduced him to her to him and him to her. I said this is your senator. And taking a back even further find saying is actually a francisco native born and raised here in a city she attended Stanford University and graduated in 1955, back to you. All right. Thanks a lot, tiffany. Were also getting a word and reaction from around the nation. Including now what president obama has to say about her. Yeah, he tweeted recently and well put it up here on the screen that feinstein will be rightly remembered as a trailblazer. The first woman to serve as mayor San Francisco in the first woman elected to the senate from california. But once she broke those barriers and walk through those doors, she got to work. And then it goes on to talk more about that ending that wed ultimately with the best politicians get into Public Service because they care about this country and the people they represent. That was certainly true of Dianne Feinstein and all of us are better for it today. Michelle and i are thinking of her daughter, katherine and everyone who knew and left her. The best politicians also have to get things done. And senator feinstein certainly did that over the by reaching across the aisle. Yeah. In fact, we heard from House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy this morning as well. He delivered some comments will play that now. The flags over the capitol were lowered in memory of senator Dianne Feinstein. As californias longestserving senator, senator feinstein broke barriers and blazed the trail for women. Barker ear was by any standards. The story. Speaking personally, i work with senator for quite some time. Together on many different bills. But the one that i think stands out was our water legislation. It was historic. Was the first time in california history. The more than 25 years that we were able to pass water. The win remember the hours. The nights that we have to work to try to work through the challenges we come from different parties. We have different philosophies, but we put our state first. At the same time, Barbara Boxer opposed of the last vote for the senate. And more than 70 votes. Time. Believe at the end of the day. The trailblazing of the first woman elected mayor. Even coming from a Different Party inspired women from both sides of the aisle to seek elected office and have their voices heard. My deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues and to her staff. Really incredible sentiments there on both sides of the aisle. I just want to say that we heard Chuck Schumer. Talk about how feinstein was a hero but also on the senate floor. Republican Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said this morning he even praised her for her dog and advocacy and diligent service. So everyone is coming together to remember, i and i com, and a legacy that will be will take. More than a day to go over in detail that were going to spend the day doing. So. Stay with us. Our coverage will continue on that just a minute. But right now at 9. 22, we want to take a peek at the weather and the traffic for you on a friday morning. And the moon was bright. Will the sun be bright . Both looking very bright. Yeah. We had the harvest moon harvest superman this morning and it really lit things up. Great noon viewing whether earlier on. Now weve got the great standing under the sun weather. Were looking out there at ample sunshine over the east bay hills later on today. Cloud cover does increase, though. Were going to be seeing a storm system tracking our direction from the pacific northwest. See those showers up there. We have the own chance of shower activity here in the bay area tonight. Youll notice after midnight tonight, those little green pockets popping up. These are going to be light and brief sprinkles to showers during our Early Morning hours tomorrow and then some heavier rainfall out towards our inland areas down into the sacramento valley. Well see this continuing at least the potential of brief showers into tomorrow afternoon as well. So if you have plans outside tomorrow, dont cancel them. Certainly. But just expect that chance of a light brief shower for the bay area. Nothing more than sprinkles 100 507 inch expected for us. Well, areas like sacramento and reading could see around a quarter of an inch of rainfall as we move into tonight and tomorrow. So nice to get a little moisture, not too much of it. The series also tapping into it with some of the worst first Winter Weather advisories of the season from 05 00am tomorrow morning through 08 00pm on sunday, upper elevations of the sierra. This is above 8,000 feet, seeing the potential 2 to 4 inches of snow bay areas temperatures today will be in the 70s and a look ahead shows a warm up into next week. So enjoy this cool weekend before the heat is back next week, were remembering dianne 9. 26. Right now. And lets get back to the breaking news. A life and legacy of u. S. Senator Dianne Feinstein who died after a long and storied careers at the age of 90 casting or last vote just yesterday on the day that she passed last hour, we talked with state senator scott wiener this hour. Were lucky to be joined by state senator dave cortese. Joining us now with thoughts and senator cortese to the news this morning of the passing of senator fight down. Feinstein. Tremendous in terms of overall vacancy and everything that shes done for the bay area. We would, of course, leaps to mind is you know, the assassinations of from former their kunia and harvey milk in how she handled that. Thats something that anybody who was a civicminded or collect official at that time. Certainly remember both both because of the shocking nature of what was going but her call didnt result in terms handling that. We saw the first glimpse of this kind of national of leadership right then. And then she came in, you know, set us up extraordinary well, with preservation of the bay by getting federal government to designate big, especially the south bay and then the peninsula areas as the don edwards wildlife refuge, federal wildlife san jose, no access whatsoever to the south until she stepped in and made it possible for that to happen. Remember, i was on the city council in jose at that time. And then some people will remember former san jose mayor ron goods all is announcing during his own inauguration but Diane Feinstein, we launch bart to san jose and of course, art reach them say in terms of the various station not too long ago. So none of that would happen without her. And thats just a a small sample from very latest. Owe it just not mention bars. She was instrumental in the cable cars to really change the shape. Of the bay area of california. We talked about joshua park and, you know, instrumental in getting the desert, getting water moving throughout the state. But whats really cool this morning, i hope you share with if you have any personal memories are personal encounters. Those have been really special to did you ever met or had occasion to deal with her personally . Yes, absolutely. You know, she was a contemporary my father still with just 91 a couple days ago, former assemblyman tom court as he was a county supervisor, Santa Clara County wind. An infant son was a San Francisco supervisor. So you can you know, those bay area, local government, relationships and experiences myself, i come along really through her own you know that theres sometimes a washington, d. C. , with the medical transportation commission, which i once which represents Transfusion Services going, you know, something about ship group. Youre especially when crow board, you know, was leading that make sure that she was she was here. She is connected with all of and, you know, we have plenty of face time with her and will miss her dearly. And so the court, how did she, you know, how did you look kind of a feeling you get from her . Because weve heard kind of 2 different stories. One about her steely, you know, her steely attitude unresolved and like youre going to stay in this room to you work this yeah, or on the other like are saying, hey, come and have a cup of coffee while you wait. You know, its somebody that worked for me. Im doing executive assistant were scheduling work who had worked with her and i apologize because i to be very complicit in that regard. And i want to know when i get somewhere, you know, is there are stages are podium. Those 2 . I need, you know, any my prepped and response to go as thats one way youre very much like senator fisa she was just grill her staff. You know, those kind of details time. You know, when i saw her specially her office in washington, the person didnt jump up and increased me as a Family Member somebody that she you know, because of what i was just describing the sort of generational politics that weve been involved with. Youre not always appreciated that she remembered, you know, there these these folks. Its amazing how folks like her and former secondary norman over could remember people in the first inning bases despite oceans and thousands of people that they run into. Yeah. Weve heard that before to her attention to detail and memories of detailed things like that are always pretty impressive for folks who witnessed. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Thank you for remembering her and commemorating her today. Thank you time now is today. Thank you time now is 9. 31. Will take a my late fatherinlaw lit up a room, but his vision dimmed with age. He had amd. I didnt know it then, but it can progress to ga, an advanced form of the disease. His struggle with vision loss from amd made me want to help you see warning signs of ga. Like Straight Lines that seem wavy, blurry, or missing visual spots that make it hard to see faces like this one, or trouble with low light that makes driving at night a real challenge. Com thursday night football on prime. Its on. Welcome to thursday night football. Thursday night football is on come on, man when the hungry bears, holy mackerel take on the up and coming commanders. For a touchdown look for them to really be aggressive tonight. Its a classic nfc showdown, chicago and washington. Unreal stream thursday night football. Welcome back. It is 9. 33. Were going to continue our look back at senator feinsteins life and legacy. She died last night at the age of weve got. Joe khaleel our news nation correspondent there with more on the reaction thats been coming in from washington and beyond. Well, thank you. A lifetime defined by a series of historic firsts. Dianne feinstein was a driving force in american politics for more than 5 decades. Senator, i know something about what firearms can but before she was a political powerhouse, she was diane goldman, one of 3 children. And in 1969, she launched a long shot bid for San Franciscos board of upervisors and one big and you say how many votes expect to get . I would expect to have a majority, if not all. Fast forward to 11 27 1978. A dark day that would reshape feinsteins life. Forever. Disgruntled fellow board member dan white marched into city hall shot and killed both San Francisco mayor George Moscone e and board member harvey milk. Feinstein heard the shots discovered milk, spotty and tried to save him. Both mayor most goni and supervisor harvey milk. Have been feinstein now the highestranking surviving official in San Francisco took over as mayor. Again, the first woman in that role. Eventually she earned praise for improvements to City Services and furthering rights. I think the community is a viable Political Force in francisco after 10 years as mayor feinstein want to race for u. S. , senate a seat she would occupy for the next 3 decades. Plus, windows were broken. Now shattering more glass ceilings, becoming the first woman to chair the intelligence committee. The Judiciary Committee voted on that then leading the powerful Judiciary Committee where she spearheaded major legislation like the 1995 assault weapons ban. Sparking fierce debate and memorable exchanges like this one. Gentle lady from california. Needs to become a little more familiar with firearms and their deadly characteristics. And i say that because it is. A personal privilege for a moment, please. Yes, certainly i am quite familiar with firearms. I became mayor is a product of assassination. Im aware sound my assassinated colleague and put a fingers through a later she lied. Democrats opposed to president trumps Supreme Court nominee brett kavanaugh, but her storied careers didnt have the storybook ending. One might hope for Failing Health during her final senate years prompted calls from her own party to resign and sparked debate about how old is too old to serve. I89 about with shingles, kept her in california and away from washington. Only returning to the senate after a 2 month recovery. But the full picture of Diane Feinsteins life and careers is one of a trailblazer, a fighter, a Political Force unto herself. And say she devoted her life to Public Service. Is an understatement. I mean, yeah, she literally did that by voting yesterday. At the age of 90 going to the senate floor. If you know someone who is 90, you know what that takes physical toll that that i mean, im you know, its just to get out of is a feet on the day that you die, which is unbelievable. But talk to michael yaki whos had experiences dealing with senator feinstein and just 2 weeks ago, we talked with lawmakers who she was talking about things she was going to get done. She was on agenda going down the task list of she wanted to continue moving forward. Is incredible. Know one thing you can ever do is count. Dianne feinstein out. Many of tried director careers and they have all failed. And even though she was she was a excuse me by. My illness. She was in physically where she wanted to be. She still, as you said yesterday, she walked to the floor. She was not in a wheelchair to cast her vote on a procedural vote that is going to be important later on. But i think you know, she her careers been defined so one who continued persevere. Someone who continue to fight. So what we did not give up. And so what you said, no to the let me show you what i can really i think you know, she had these ideas, right . And it all started when she rose to politics. Surprisingly, with this horrible, you know, beginning with the violence in San Francisco in 2 people being assassinated. But you have michael and you, you know, this growing older, you know our minds and have all these ideas and were sharpen our spirits, have these ideas and our bodies are breaking down and she had been she had that fall in august in San Francisco. She had shingles yet. Its a polite us. But you know, you still you have the spirit in you that wants to get things done. Keep moving in would you describe as her driving force that stayed with her throughout her entire life. That was more important than anything to get done. I think i think you i think you summed it up. It really is her overall driving force service Public Service. You kind of nail it on the earlier, dari. And that is her wrist, feeling a responsibility to this nation to the state to this city to continue to work in the agenda that we want to see happen to fight for greater rights to fight for a cleaner environment to fight for gun control. These are the things that that propelled him motivated her throughout her entire life and they and they are part of the very fabric of her being. So you know it and it goes to why all those people in may, she should quit. Well, you know. Part of who you are this is the thing that animates make your blood in the morning. Its hard to tell. So in a given up and and you know, many have tried all and she went out. She went out this morning on her own terms as an elected senator having cast your vote the night before showing that she is capable of doing doing the nations business now shes in gods arms you know, words were here, you know, pondering my and celebrating the legacy the impact that shes had. Im on our country. You know, as weve been chatting with you throughout the morning, i notices photographs behind you have to imagine you had at least a photo or 2 taken with the senator. Yeah, in fact, i think you potion won that one earlier today and in an earlier segment and there we go at the library of congress in 2008, and that was actually i mean, all of these people there and chic. Bed was not just a moment. That arm was wrapped around my shoulder as she stared me around the room introduced me to hollywoods allows you to introduce me cabinet future cabinet secretary to this would be for obama inauguration at a party that all congress. And yes, my name dropping like its a beautiful place have a party. And shes a story. This is michael he was a member of board of supervisors. I wasnt the board of supervisors. He did a great job for San Francisco on the u. S. Commission civil rights and you know, everyone and hollywood actresses are looking like we just got right. But cisco in the bay area. Bree made a big deal to her. It was a big part. You can imagine, become the president s and like i was on the board of supervisors. I want to get you in your its its where she got. Its where she had her teeth and how right. Its the place they gave. Gave her the shot. Where the voters are. San francisco elected a woman to the board of supervisors for the first time elected. The mayor has. As a woman mayor for the time, you know, theres a deep, deep, just a connection that she had to the city that she loved and and, you know, we are the beneficiaries of it out throughout our lives. And was just just remember look at one, a list issues with my life. Supervisor you know, ive been posting stuff facebook in an instagram and. Like i said in the earlier hour. There are a lot of people out there who are like duncan and i g not. And Joshua Tree National park and they have no idea to her that only there because because of her there there are there places in the state today where you go . But for but for her . Would be developed, i would be under some would be under a bulldozer right along the coast california county inland. These are the things that you will remember. Dion kind starting 4 and long be long before anyone will you remember her name . Imprint will be there. And im just saying one where the and the cable cars. And by the way, we have this already for Clear Thinking about it. With her and tony bennett. Oh, just she left her heart in San Francisco. We are outside of her home in San Francisco. People are leaving flowers there and it just. Okay now said will move yeah. Chat with michael again. Im purposely making myself emotional down, but you you know, its its a tough morning. Thank it is. But its its great to remember yeah, really is. All well get back more of our coverage of that in a minute 9. 43. Is the time. Lets get to the weather center. Continuing our coverage now remembering the life and legacy of Dianne Feinstein who died last night at the age of 90 over the course of her careers. She was a pioneer for women in politics groundbreaker on so many different fronts. Lets take a look back. A pioneer of american politics. Dianne feinstein placed up half for all women leading them in the halls of washington, d. C. , being a woman. In our society even today is difficult. Born in 1933, and raised in San Francisco. Feinstein says her love for politics began when she was just 16 at a time when a womens role was in the home. The stanford grad took her first job in Public Office in 1959.
