Slow you down a little bit as youre getting out there and then the senate to certainly the case this morning roadways are definitely wet. So you want to give yourselves that extra time as you venture outside overall just be prepared for the rainfall that. Yeah were going to continue to see out there today were doing across the bay from sausalito at San Francisco, a misty look to it morning that you do want to be prepared for just to stay dry. So right now the core of this Atmospheric River event still sits mostly to the south across the bay, the trajectory of it has shifted a little bit. It was pretty much coming into the Central Coast from the west earlier now its hitting the coast of the state from the south and west and in the process we have actually seen a resurgence of moisture in areas like san jose as well as other areas further south in the bay, we zoom in on some of the spots this morning you can see those areas of yellow orange and even red thats the deeper and heavier rainfall right around san jose on up towards sunnyvale Mountain View and down into the Santa Cruz Mountains notably some of our areas that are really seeing some pretty heavy rainfall intensity at the moment, you go a little bit further northward in the bay and its a little spotty or as far as your showers go, but there are a couple of areas to note such as in the east bay just north of the tri valley. You are seeing rainfall intensity increasing as north as and up to san ramon to a few light to moderate showers on over and eastern portions Solano County, especially east of vacaville, also looking at some of those lighter showers but lets really focus our attention on the south bay because that is the area that does have the heaviest of rainfall right now and that includes the city of san jose on over to sonny bill as i mentioned watch your travel on 8. 81 oh one as well as 85 all these areas are very waterlogged this morning as rainfall intensity has increased so much and one area of know that is especially troublesome is right around the czu complex fire burn scar now that burn scars outlined here on the map in red you can see that outline right there massive fire just one of many historically large fires this past season and we do have some very heavy rainfall actively falling on top of that burn scar now last night. We saw additional heavy rainfall on top of what was already saturated soils and that is causing the risk of any sort of debris flows are mudslides something that we have seen further south in Monterey County on some of their burn scars, so keep a close eye on that this morning, hopefully rainfall intensity doesnt pick up in the vicinity of that burn scar as for rainfall totals throughout the course of the day today we are going to see those totals are rising above an inch for most areas as we do work our way gradually towards the finish of the day youll notice that we start to see the system easing up a bit and that actually does set us up for a couple of dry days ahead of us into friday and saturday to be a good chance for some of this ground to some of this excess moisture an opportunity for the next showers that will have next week to hopefully soak back into our ground thats exactly what needs to happen. 40s and 50s for current temperatures with pittsburgh berkeley in alameda each in the upper 40s low 50s for most of the rest of the bay area so a mild start but another wet start so just dont forget the rain jacket, the umbrella and the extra few minutes to get to work reyna john thank you you mention really wet roadways out there were seeing that a lot of the south bay. Ive seen several small traffic collisions in the south a specially however youve got a lot of wet roads to contend with the bay bridge is under a high wind advisory your commute into the city under 9 minutes to fremont street exit and the san mateo bridge as youre traveling across to the peninsula. Under 15 minutes, she can see just how wet the see that water reflecting from the lights on the vehicles there. The Richmond Sandra fell bridge also another wet one this morning under 8 minutes as you head into richmond and the Golden Gate Bridge under 22. Like john mentioned its very slick and wet over here in the south seen several small accidents pop up around northbound 17 it can add in campbell also sales a long one oh one north down an accident there and in los gatos so take your time this morning and drive safe back to the headlines all right, thank you very much rain it for rain. As we know is pummeling the bay areas been doing so for 3 days now and thats raising the risk of flooding, several people still cant get back to their homes and thats because of warnings that are still in place near those burn zones in san Mateo Santa Cruz counties that john was just talking about heres a map showing where those evacuation areas are look for the areas shaded in yellow, those are the warnings right now which is an indication for people to have their things ready to go because they may get the call that that theyll soon be moved to a mandatory evacuation area which is where we see the red thats where folks are being required by local authorities to evacuate their homes. Head to safer grounds because obviously the threat of debris flows mudslides theyre all a major concern there and crawfords gayle ong takes a closer look and what folks in this part of the bay area are dealing with. So again in the Santa Cruz Mountains. But no reports of debris flows mudslides in the burn scars of the czu lightning complex fire from last summer evacuation orders are still in place in parts of Santa Cruz CountyWilliam Astor sent a Boulder Creek decided to stay behind you live here you get used to it youre living in the forest through trees fall. The road gets blocked. Power goes out. I mean i thought legos has always been that were the Atmospheric River produced at least over 4 inches of rain its not unusual to receive heavy rain in the san lorenzo valley, but the recent wildfire destroyed vegetation that would normally holds soil and debris in place setting the stage for destructive debris flows. It happened in Monterey County wednesday. The storm stalled over the Central Coast wall up to Monterey County when heavy rains too much rain too fast. A swamp to rule area south of salinas in the burn scars of the river fire in august. Firefighters say at least 2 dozen homes and buildings had minor to severe damage. One person hurt while escaping her home, the safest thing for people to do is heed evacuation orders. Get out for a few days intel, but the rain passes back in Boulder Creek crews to get advantage of the low in the rain clearing out rocks and tree limbs Emergency Personnel stage at high risk areas ahead of the threat. Even though were seeing breaks in the rain. A number of agencies still have to go out and assess for safety before anyone can return home in felton gayle ong kron 4 news. Well cleanup still underway across the bay area from tuesdays storm in fact this was seen in orinda as crews. Were trying to clean up debris from trees that were knocked over by the wind thankfully. The damage wasnt as bad as they had feared. But there was still several road closures and hundreds of homes lost power as well we spoke to one homeowner about the damage they had. The middle of night. Offense banging. Went out slows didnt see this but we lost power evening and then you know this. Not the whole night we didnt have any logan this morning is out a stray. Now pg e says that this single tree cut power to about 50 customers. It has since been restored so good news there, but pg e crews also had their hands full working to restore power to 10s of thousands of people across the bay area. Their trucks and heavy machinery were on sir Francis Drake boulevard in Point Reyes Station where workers there had to replace a power pole and a downed line. It left about a 140 customers in that area without power. The overnight combination wind and rain also did a lot of damage to trees in the city of San Francisco. Crews had to respond to roughly 3 dozen downed tree limbs well trees and tree limbs it was a mix of both and here you can see some of the images of a tree that snapped in half by the storm. Its downed limbs in golf to in the gulf the car there denting at this was on and the street in the sunny side area. If you pictures like that in your neighborhood of damage that was done by these storms be sure to download the kron 4 news app and use the reported tab to send us pictures video work it into our coverage also download the kron on app both are free both will give you the latest information as we get into the newsroom about evacuation orders and road closures will also be live radar imagery. There to see you can track the storm in your particular neighborhood. Now for 9. Lets turn our attention to the latest with the coronavirus pandemic january has officially been the deadliest month since the start of this crisis. And there are still 4 days left. According Johns Hopkins university nearly 80,000 people have died from covid19 here in the u. S. Just this month alone. The previous record which was around 65,000 happened back in december. In the north bay, some teachers are upset after a School Superintendent was able to get vaccinated before they could get the shot. The nevada unified School Superintendent chris costa received his first dosage of the covid19 vaccine. Soon after kron 4 news heard from other teachers who are infuriated by the superintendent being able to get vaccinated when teachers Warren CountyPublic Health officer doctor matt willis says that unfortunately supplies are scarce. And teachers are in the upper tier to get vaccinated, but there is just not enough to go around. We wish we were having to make these these rationing you know we had hoped that it would be a both and we hoped it would be our older residents. We know our highest risk for death they get infected a thats thats a huge reason to prioritize that group but also include those who are on the front lines i feel that our superintendent has. Made a big mistake and i think he recognizes that he made a big mistake and she cant turn back time. Well weve reached out to the district to get some comment as to why the superintendent was able to get the shot when nobody else in the teaching ranks could so far we have not got no reply. Happening today, restaurants in San Francisco can officially start serving customers outdoors again this all in the middle of all rain that weve seen here the past couple days, some businesses are sticking it out until they know people will be comfortably able to sit outside another these restaurants face is simply just not having enough money to bring their employees back. The round 2 of the Payroll Protection Program has been a complete. Mess we dont want to bring people on board without know youre going to to make payroll that first pay period, im not sold on. Having a roof and park was going to bring enough people out to make it that. Worth it to us. I mean ive applied for 10 grants i have not gotten a single lot. A Restaurant Owners say that they hope the rain will let up by the weekend so that at least some people could be outdoors and dining and supporting their businesses. For 11 on the clock will be back with more news in a minute. Heres a quick look at some of the rain falling right now stormtracker 4 radar shows weve got heavy rain. Pummeling Santa Cruz Mountains the south bay portions of the east bay. John trouble keeping an eye on the Weather Center. Well get another update shortly. Back at 4. 14 the Biden Administration is focused on getting the Covid Vaccine out to better protect americans but theyre also looking at the future of the virus. We have our washington correspondent basil john joining us live in washington with the very latest on the administrations next steps pays a good morning. Good morning and yes, the president s team says they are in the process of getting more vaccines. But they say it will require continued cooperation to meet their goal. A reality. Joe Bidens Administration wants to take proactive steps to deal with the covid19 pandemic we are releasing more supply. Activating fema. And deploying many more personnel covid19 Response TeamSenior Adviser andy slavitt says full cooperation from fema will help reach the first goal. Of 100 million vaccines in a 100 days and more fema announced they have obligated 1 billion dollars to support state vaccination sites. The white house says doses from pfizer and moderna are going out to states as soon as theyre available. At the same time, the administration is monitoring results from other trials is going to be looking at efficacy not only in the United States. But also in south africa and in brazil doctor Anthony Fauci says this testing will prepare the United States if any covid variance come to the country as new variants are in south africa, brazil and the uk we have to be concerned looking forward and what the for the evolution of this might be White House Press secretary jen psaki says the president and his team are focused on Contingency Planning to handle the demands of the virus this is a Herculean Task that has never been done before, but also ensuring vaccinators we had vaccine sites. It said are available. Now the Administration Says the defense production act will help produce the necessary ppe. So vaccinators will be protected as they administer as many shots as possible into the arms of americans, reporting live in washington, im basil john anything to make that process go faster thank you very for the update. Time now for 16, lets get another check of the weather weve got john trouble in the Weather Center hands full once again john with stormy conditions out there the morning with it out there james, so we saw the heavy rainfall from tuesday night into wednesday morning yesterday we saw isolated showers some of those picked up last night. And now especially for the south bay are in the midst of what is the very edge of the Atmospheric River actually having worked its way back up to you so we still have plenty to talk about out there and for some of us some really heavy rainfall right now as a foe you saw some good rain last night the tarmac is wet again this morning and thats also the case on many roads as you venture out on to them so weve got another morning that you want to take it a little lecture slow give yourself that extra time for your morning commute. The last thing you need to do is get caught trying to go fast out there when you are on some wet roadways looking at dry skies for much of the north bay right now we do have some light sprinkles in parts of the peninsula on up into Solano County but obviously you can see where that rain isnt really the core the Atmospheric River has just shifted itself northward just a little bit now bringing with it some heavy rainfall to some of our south bay areas zooming in on san jose you are seeing on and off area of heavy rain interspersed by some lighter showers but for the most part the south bay is mostly in the midst of some heavier stuff currently really stretching from areas like Mountain View and sunnyvale through santa clara down the san jose and eventually to morgan hill. Now a little bit further south into the Santa Cruz Mountains weve also seen that heavy rainfall over the past few hours. Good news temporarily right now is that there has been a bit of a down trend in rainfall intensity. The intensity of rainfall how much you get in a short period of time is actually really the biggest thing that could affect any debris flows up there so you just need to be seeing green, not the yellows and oranges thats not what you want to see in this area because thats the most prone area to those debris flows into that small stream flooding as for the tri valley right now livermore if youre heading up the altamonte you run into some heavy rainfall as you do so in fact the sun ogrady also in the midst of some heavier rain right there along to 62 in 6. 80 as it reverses on over towards san ramon. Hayward right at the edge of some of these heavier rain once you head south of hayward towards fremont youll notice rainfall picking up. Freeman southward through milpitas and eventually to san jose you get the picture thats where the heavier rain is Atmospheric River i told you has shifted a bit further to the north yesterday was bulls right there along the coastline of Monterey County found further south into San Luis Obispo but what we do have now is a bit of a retro grade happening. So its moved back up to where it came from and that does mean now the bay areas really tapping into the moisture, especially that very southern end of the bay area this morning so do expect some heavier showers the morning, especially the further south in the bay, you get at times this moisture water rise a little bit further northward. That means areas like San Francisco contra costa solano counties will also be getting into the mix and also looking at the potential of isolated heavy downpours maybe even a roll of thunder too we saw some hail in spots yesterday. Thats also potential today as we see this afternoon convection that thunderstorm building and you do see those isolated cells popping up as we work our way later this morning on into the afternoon. So generally your heavier totals of rainfall will be for the south bay as well as for portions of the east bay, the further north you get you will see more isolated burst of heavier rainfall now as we work our way towards 10 45pm tonight, look at a lot less activity out there we really start to quiet down at least take a step a foot off the gas pedal as we work our way into the evening tomorrow morning a couple of showers possible and then the rest of your friday a much needed area dry weather to be expected friday and saturday a continuation of that dry weather so for a chance we get that runoff a chance to for to soak into the ground before next round of rainfall kicking off on sunday, taking us into monday and tuesday too so you do have dry weather to look forward to at least a little stretch of it just around the corner. Todays rainfall totals not going down to as much as we had been seeing but still around a half of an inch to up to an inch in areas like napa is some good rain by any standard so its nice to be seeing that from the Santa Cruz Mountains on over into the diablo range and now returning a flash flood advisories for the north bay as we do see those popup areas of heavy rainfall into the afternoon. These will extend through the afternoon today as i mentioned after that point into the evening tonight things should quiet down enough that that risk of flash flooding begins to diminish. But were still in the midst of some heavy rainfall during the day. As for the mountains still blizzard warnings still winter storm warnings we still have very strong winds up there and the potential of additional feet of snowfall we are going to be seeing additional over a foot of it at donner pass weve seen multiple feet already at Donner Summit there areas like pine crest in kirkwood also accumulating over 2 additional feet of snow snow level is beginning to rise, though that means areas like mariposa right there in the foothills of the sierra starting to work your way out of snow level so much where you had been in it. Now as far as temperatures go daytime highs, not changing much its back to the 50s 50s will stick around through friday and saturday are to driest days of this forecast for the rest of the week. As i mentioned sunday we do see the return of some showers further north in the bay area. Those should intensify into monday and tuesday before we likely dry out yet again into wednesday of next week. Reyna john you mentioned were seeing a lot of roadway flooding in the south seen the largest concentration. A smaller traffic collisions there as well so drive safely your commute into the city that fremont street exit under 8 minutes, the bay bridge is also under a high wind advisory this morning. The san mateo bridge under 15 minutes for your commute as you head across to the peninsula. There, but still were seeing a lot of water on our bridges, so you want to drive slowly. The Richmond Sandra fell bridge pretty quiet over here under 9 minutes as you commute out of richmond and the Golden Gate Bridge also looking great for your commute lie sunlight here under 22 minutes so like i mentioned those traffic collisions that keep popping up westbound to 37 in milpitas thats the most recent accident that just popped up there also we have one northbound 17 a candid at and campbell, san jose youre seen one in the air as well northbound one oh one in oakland, so roadways are very slick and wet in this area. Take your time leave the house a back at 4. 25 in the east Bay Oakland International Airport now the first airport in the country to sell test kits out of a vending machine. The at home covid test kits require travelers to send in a saliva sample through the mail and then they get the results through an app the test range anywhere from a 130 to a 150 each. This is in addition to the curbside rapid covid19 testing thats already available out there at the airport. Obviously we dont. Recommend people taking the test for it before they hopped on board a flight but when they come home, theres a lot of people who are thinking of quarantining theyre not sure that you know maybe the you know have got the virus during their travel. So that when they arrive at Oakland International airport when they land. They have this option to go to the vending machine and use it. The cdc says that if you plan to travel internationally will need to get tested no more than 3 days before flying into the u. S. And also provide proof of a negative result, or recovery from an infection. Well leave you with a quick live look here at stormtracker 4 again following heavy showers moving across the south and east bays right now john trouble in the Weather Center to complete update for us in a minute. And then reyna harvey in the Traffic Center watching the impact this is having on the morning will be right back. Were back at 4. 34 just joining us this morning. Obviously youve heard the rain outside its coming down pretty good in spots. Weve got john trouble starting off a half hour in the Weather Center. With the latest on that morning john good morning james, yeah, specially for the south bay we are seeing some really heavy shower activity. This morning. Atmospheric river weve heard that word a lot lately well it shifted further south yesterday but it is actually retrograde it a bit that means its shifted back or direction. This morning. And in the process has resulted in heavy rain, especially right now for areas like san jose into the Santa Cruz Mountains its going to look outside at San Francisco, more of a misty view across the bay looking from sausalito obviously can spot where the heavy rain is still on the Central Coast but pushed back up a little bit further now returning to areas of santa clara, southern san mateo and alameda counties as ll
