64 degrees oakland at 68. Napa petaluma and santa rosa, some of your cooler spots in the mid to upper 50s ive got more on your forecast. Still ahead over to you robin thank you job with the traffic is actually improving im checking out the san mateo bridge and im noticing that that the drive time. Is going down so thats good news for you if youre about to use it here it is west 92. A little busy but not bad at all were 15 minutes to the peninsula here at the bay bridge. Yes, we still have slowed traffic rolling into San Francisco, its a slow roll, but its not bad stacked up just the on west grand and heres a look at some of your freeways around the bay area we have 6. 80 pacheco to danville thats going south averaging 15 minutes which is good no problems for the dumbarton bridge, 84 west 5. 80 is recovering from an earlier crash out of haas the so yes, its pretty slow leaving livermore heading toward dublin and then one on one from the peninsula to San Francisco heading north wide open with no problems on over to the 80 split darya james. Thanks a lot rob. A nato won and breaking news from overnight a shooting in the south bay 2 people were killed and 3 injured in san jose for the very latest on what we know so far lets head there now kron fours will tran live at the scene in san jose. Well. And james 9 hours into this investigation, theyre still looking for the shooter or shooters this is so close to the campus of San Jose State University in fact its on the other side. The mobile crime lab just another block from that crime lab is San Jose State University you can see investigators are still here. People are allowed to leave their homes so long as they obviously do not into fear with the investigation so many so many evidence markers on the ground at this particular time let me show you video of the scene this all happened at around 1030 or so last night all of a sudden the quiet night. Shots rang out. At least 5 shots, we know that because 5 people were hit. 2 of them actually their injury so severe james and area that they died at the scene and the coroners office. Still trying to identify them and tell their families 3 others rushed to the hospital at this time. We believe that theyre still alive because they were alive when they were taken to the hospital no update on their condition. Also at this particular time theyre still talking to witnesses hoping to track down some descriptions so they can pass it along to the public. This happened when so many people were inside their homes and awake at the time. We were able to talk to a neighbor hears that neighbor. Telling us what they heard. It sucks because its in our neighborhood. This is not the type of community we want to live you know this is not the example we want to separate kids like its been a different vibe ever i mean things have been online and not in person theres not as many students around and theres kind of just more people looking for trouble. So you heard that last person talking about students. This has nothing to do according to investigators so far in their investigation with students whether its high school or San Jose State University but of course everything is on the table. The 5 people involved they dont know if they were part of some gang of their family members if they were targeted. But at this particular time. Theyre still hoping to talk to witnesses looking for Surveillance Footage of all of this remains to be shut down in they actually told me james and yuri at 5 oclock in the morning that they probably would wrap up at around 7 oclock but obviously theyre running behind as far as the schedule and theyre obviously not rushing things as they want to make sure that talk to as many witnesses and collect as much evidence as they possibly can. But we will show you people on the porch at this particular time this has caught a lot of people off guard by and large this is a safe neighborhood mean you can clearly see how much in shock that they are at this time, no motive behind the double homicide. Back to you. All right, thanks. Well. Big story were following this morning just a couple days after the world saw a record oneday rise in covid cases, californias infection rate actually falling and today marin county gets to move into phase 2 and more businesses can now do business indoors conference there since it is live in marin county with a look at what gets to open now sara. Nice to be heading on to the other side of the pandemic hopefully it sticks thats what im hearing from people here in marin county excited to hear that places can reopen indoors, including movie theaters check out this movie theater. The Century Theater and larkspur and there you have all the signs thats a face masks are required in sine inside in that cleanliness is everywhere inside at in every single room of the theater so interesting to see take a look at this map. Those you can get a better idea of whats happening here. Were heading into tier 2 of the states colorcoded terror system here in marin county. Its not are in though is the pink areas on the map are the ones that are in tier 2 in a sea of purple you can see tier 2 is the substantial risk category compared to tier one which is the widespread category now the other counties in tier 2 are napa San Francisco and santa clara counties moving into tier 2 means these businesses can reopen indoors, including Retail Stores and indoor malls at 50 capacity restaurants museums, places of worship can reopen at 25 capacity, certain personal Care Services like skin nair nail hair so services can resume indoor operations and gyms people excited about that they can reopen too but as weve learned from San Francisco only at 10 capacity. Movie theaters where im right now 25 capacity and i just talked with a man who says hes extremely excited for theaters and other places to reopen. I would love to go to a movie i miss not quite as much done this the gym but but i have 3 Young Children and thats something that we did at least once a month so were excited about that i you know opening a backup if if we can keep our you know, maybe a few says hard against 6 feet. Is still a good requirement to go by so. Now bill and other people have talked to this morning told me that theyre being cautiously optimistic because as weve seen before with reopening you can always revert back depending on coronavirus cases and that all depends on everyones behavior Wearing Masks and keeping distance now if you are in county does well by september 29th they very well could get the go ahead to reopen schools without that annoying in intense application process there are still restrictions of course but another step in moving forward through this pandemic for now reporting live in marin county Sarah Stinson kron 4 news. Yeah, the Big Questions theres going to be anybody comes and goes in doors to these businesses and thats when well start to follow. After today, thanks a lot. All right time now is 8 08 we have some breaking news that we need to tell you about out of oakland, a Large Police Presence right now in the area of 12th and castro. We do have video from the scene which will try to bring up for you from the citizens app and there it is we have a crew on the way covers harvey en route right now get the latest here in a moment but joining us on the phone right now is john watson from Oakland Police thank you so much for joining us first off i understand 2 officers were hurt in Police Encounter can you explain what happened. Yes, good just after 07 00am we had one of our community members. All regarding a vehicle. That had collided into a tree about the 700 block of 12th street that that that swapping castro area. When our officers arrived on scene they wanted to check on the driver to film a driver. Ensure they need medical or whatever resources we could provide. The driver appeared to be unresponsive. The were making are sussman and checkey and the driver of work out immediately started seeing the car into reverse. Thats trapped both of our officers knocking them down to the ground. One of our officers was dragged about 10 to 15 feet. Currently theyre both at the hospital. They are in good condition. But apple hospital i concerning especially what we know has gone on in the news and some of the major incident. That have happened with Law Enforcement authorities concerning but we can share with you. The officers are currently at hospital and in good condition, wow so it seems like. Was this like an impaired driver and maybe. And i assume is and then he lost consciousness or and then he woke up and freaked out and wanted to take off. Do you have an idea of what happened. Yeah, good question and what we do know is that the one the driver woke up the officers engaged in conversation get a very good discouraging him. From trying to leave the scene. Wanted to again check on his well being im sure he didnt need medical attention. Certainly a different turn. And by putting the car into reverse that caused the officers be knocked down and just based on where the officers were in the portion of car they drive the one officer, the driver a clearly that that officer was being dragged i disregard for the officers and left the scene we are asking that the driver do come forward turned himself and we know its a male driver. We have very good information regarding the driver and the vehicle. We continue our search for that vehicle and the driver we have our Law Enforcement partners such as bhp a working with that. Again we appreciate and want to thank our community members. Theyd at the scene. Witnesses that provided he critical were very much appreciate it. What is that car were looking for then i would assume has lot of damage to a did you tell can you give us a description. And it sounds like you actually know who the cars registered to as well. What we can share with you is a some of those details right we are going to be holding just for investigation. But we would like to follow up with our media partners. I we end up, providing that Information Knowledge media that our community but right now an active investigation. We still have the the road closey on castro. From a jefferson 2 im sorry. They would close on wall street. From jefferson to castro street. I know that the killer block is going to be closed for quite some time we ever technicians were the scene and are nation so continue so this drivers running from the police but to be clear he was running from took the police when he got the truck in a crash. They were chasing this is just a crash and then the police were responding. Thats a called in one of our Community Community members called in was very concerned. The driver slumped over the steering wheel, the car was up against a again very or concern. With our community and you know the condition of the driver know when the officers arrived that when it took a different turn. Okay, thanks a lot with the Oakland Police. Good to know those officers are recovering, but both in the hospital this morning and as soon as we get more information from or any other sources out there again rain harveys heading to the scene so soon as we establish a li and were back at 8. 15 the breaking news nationally is the situation on the gulf coast hurricane sally, made landfall as a category 2 hurricane striking the Florida Panhandle and portions of south alabama. And you can see in the video what the storm brought with it. Torrential rain flooding, strong winds. We have more than a 150,000 homes and businesses without electricity. This morning. Sadly, a category 2 storm again with winds clocked at a 100 miles per hour. When it came on shore dozens of people had to be rescued from flooded homes in alabama and the Weather Service now reporting 3 feet of water in downtown pensacola. All right, lets get a check of our own forecast this morning. We have bad air that were still tracking. What do you have for us john yeah, least we have improvements out there james across the bay area with lot less smoke in the atmosphere than what we had been seeing. While the creek looking pretty good this morning compared to where we had been look at this air quality were going across the bay area with the exception of a couple of moderate pockets, poor air still remains on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada where we are still looking at wildfires burning out that direction skies will clear out into the afternoon after some low stratus hanging out above us this morning that is making for some great to kick off this wednesday. We do have this frontal boundary to our west thats been steering winds from the southwest off the pacific towards the bay. This is why our air has been just cleaned up the past few days and will continue to be cleaned into thursday and friday winds relax into saturday and that opens the door for some smoke from the sierra to work its way slowly back into the bay by sunday so enjoy these next few days of cleaner air what we do have it. Well this onshore flow continues to keep us nice and smokefree. Todays daytime highs will be comfortable pretty much the same as yesterdays 70s and 80s for your peak temperatures with concord 87 oakland and i 76 san jose right around 80 degrees for the high today. Tomorrow and friday wont change much were going to continue to have some good air quality with temperatures in the mid 80s, inland and 70s by the bay. Saturday winds calm down and by sunday could see the return of some smoke pushing back into the region. Robin. All right, thank you john, lets check in on the traffic which is still quite slow this morning heading into San Francisco over the bay bridge toll plaza its very quiet. We had crashes earlier this morning but nothing active now, but it is still stacked up from west grand so before fair 92 is actually thinning out hopefully it will stay this way but the heavier traffic was in the last hour now were looking good so 14 minutes from hayward over to send the tale, were just checking out traffic tracker checking out the east shore freeway 20 minutes from crockett down to the oakland maze that looks good. No problems for 24 out of walnut creek to oakland and picking up the south bay youre doing just fine on north one oh one and north to 80 leaving san jose heading to the peninsula. In the buzz, everybodys trolling the clippers for blowing a 3 one lead, im not going to join and you can see the anguish on their faces as they watched jamal murray drain, 40 points and see their finals dreams flushed down the drain. Now the nuggets take on and the lakers for the western conference crown and the clippers were left licking their wounds down the middle it hurts remove all you know again. Youre one together first first run. Together. Course we want to win but weve been very optimistic. About us being together building going down the road. And what a road its been for the nuggets denver did something no team ever has they came back from being down 3, one not once but twice in the same playoffs. Meantime outside the bubble. If its not coronavirus its bad air derailing the San Francisco giants small from the west coast fires was so bad in seattle they had to scrap the games there and now they will play them. Here instead luckily the bad air blue out of the bay just in time for the giants and mariners to play tonight and tomorrow at oracle the nfl is warning coaches keep your mask on or else that means you shandy. Mouth and nose around the neck is not good enough. And Fran Shanahan is the only what you like that i just made in a french i just say that ok so hes not the only want to look coach gruden got call his guard down during the raiders game, its not a slaying as did a lot of famous faces who are going to take it on the chin if they keep this up or down belichick its not a neck, warmer either theyre supposed to wear them at all times properly. No matter. How hot how annoying or how foggy they get as probably the last time at andy reid will opt for a face shield he could hardly see on sunday, the fortyniners flight of the jets this weekend you ever wonder. Who gets to man those prized athletic charter flights. Pretty young women. Thats what 2 flight attendants claim they filed a lawsuit accusing United Airlines of unfairly staffing nfl and mlb flight with young white blond blue eyed females united cant comment on litigation but they say gender age and race have nothing to do with their sports. Charters i fly coach, im just happy to get a bag of peanuts from anybody. Thats the bus. A 24 and the latest on the wildfires, the creek fire in Fresno County has burned 220,000 acres its 18 contained. The august complex fire that one is in mendocino and humboldt counties. And it is 30 contained the north complex fires or 34 contained with over 273,000 acres burned and then the eldorado fire is 61 contained at almost 20,000 acres big now lets take a look at the map. It shows you all the fires burning across the state more than 3 million acres have burned and more than 4,200 homes and other structures have been destroyed in northern california. At least 35 people have been killed in the fires. The fires that are closer to the bay area are getting closer to full containment, the lnu complex fires in the north bay, 98 contained. The scu complex fires in the east and south bays 98 contained as well and the czu complex fires in san Mateo Santa Cruz counties, or 93 contained. The woodward fire thats one of Point Reyes National seashore brown county is 95 contained. Well people are finally getting allowed back into their neighborhoods after the beachy creek fire tore through rural oregon, thousands of people were displaced by those flames but even though conditions are improving theyre still having to keep people from going home because conditions are still too dangerous with mike more now from our sister station koam with more. It was like a wall of fire. It was a rainy fire. The destruction is unlike anything weve seen in our state. Hundreds of family homes torched it turned into rubble. We obtained this new video showing the devastation in gates in lyons. Just a few miles west of those towns mckeeman is the final checkpoint for families trying to visit their homes. And its here Officials Say its simply too dangerous to go. Any further. The house on our street has been strike i was able to go see whats left of my place i mean my daughter left dying monday. Hours afterwards. All the time was to flames my motor home burned. Well i want to go up and see if playing kane played a couple things of my wife. She passed about a year and a half ago. And want to get that show. The Marion CountySheriffs Office told me some people are refusing to leave their homes and level 3 evacuation areas. Both Law Enforcement and locals who have lost their homes. Pleading for those people to pack up. And leave immediately believe it when they say you should get ready, you know, i thought id come back in the day i didnt think we would never be able to go back. As mike moore reporting so far the beach creek fire has burned more than a 188,000 acres and killed at least 4 people. Its 8. 27 and coming up next on kron 00 04am morning news, a new testing site is opening in berkeley, were gonna tell you how the city has managed to keep positive coronavirus cases so low. Cups, plates, burgers, chips. Masks, outdoor air, 6 feet of distance, as few people as possible, and plenty of hand soap. Make sure lowering the risk of spreading covid19 is on your list for your next small gathering. Do your part to lower the risk. The 3 right now we can finally breathe a little sigh of relief. Just a little bit yeah so we got that to look forward to rob well robin have a few problems earlier whats it like now robin where those problems are gone, but the slow traffic is still there left behind lots of crowding so well check in on the bridges, ok, hows the air so much better guys definitely a nice fresh sigh of relief as youre stepping outside this morning look at what youre being greeted by a little bit of cloud cover over the coast all the way to our bayside areas. But certainly not looking at near as now that smoke that we had been saying this is due to this push of cool ocean air that weve been seeing pretty consistently for a few days now foggo burn off this afternoon and plenty blue skies can be expected. And in addition to those blue skies, not a whole lot of haze and that is just the cherry on top of what will be. Earlier best day in multiple weeks to be venturing out there close to normal if not good air quality virtually across the entirety of the bay area today. So i hope you do get a chance to enjoy this wednesday. Outdoors a bit 50s and 60s for current temperatures, its a cool start. Its a great start but sunshine and warmth later on today. Robin. All right, lets check in on the traffic we had a little bit of crowding within the last what 20 minutes or so at the Richmond Sandra fell so its setting up already this commutes pretty much over less something new pops up that starts to stack of traffic but were looking good here on west bound 5. 80 from the pay gates across the span and all the way over to one o one, its also thinning out at the bay bridge toll plaza at one point your backup spilled right through the bottom of the maze now its often on from west grand movie well across the upper deck. You had some words slow traffic on the northbound central if youre continuing through San Francisco, heres a look at some drive times and they do not include hot spots, the big problems are out of the way highway for its slow through pittsburgh, 33 minutes hear from one 62 to 42 but smooth sailing on south 6 ad the minutes and one oh one north leaving san jose heading to the peninsula james star ian thanks a lot robin. All right lets get back to our breaking news this morning 2 officers injured while investigating a car crash in oakland kron fours reyna harvey is at the scene with the details rana what happened. This was a dramatic scene like you mention those 2 officers in the hospital, but im joined live right now with Karen Buckley she actually actually witnessed the entire thing unfold. So kara lets start with when you first saw the man who was in the tree, lets talk start with that. I was on my morning walk and i saw the car. Kind of off the star of the curve diagonally against the tree it looks like it may be overdosed or was so i call the nonemergency line and the officers came within about 5 minutes when the officers arrived on scene then what happened after that the off one of the officers approached the driver side and were trying to get the guy to open the car i dont think he was waking up i couldnt quite say, but they were knocking and then finally he opened the door and i kept hearing the officers you put the car in park put the car in park. But i was behind the party can see the reverse lights go on and off on and off and they were on and he just backed up really quickly was dragged the officers and then just took in this towards castro street when freeways right here do we know if he got on the freeway after that would you see i didnt see that its my suspicion that he took pretty a pretty wide turn so that would be the direction that would make most sense. The officers, you know my first thought would be how are they doing what it looked like after they were dragged. I think they were like in they definitely they both got up so thats good and the paramedics were here really so hopefully theyre ok for you being out here witnessing all of that you pretty shaken up you said youre a little shaken up didnt expect to see any of that yeah, im little shaky but of. You know just trying to get out here in the clear air for once and get my walk on and. Not so i know they have not yet released a description and you know that that the suspect man woman age would you know i was a young guy i think he was probably in his late teens early 20s from what i saw i didnt get a great look at them because like a young black but its yeah thats all i really saw what about the vehicle that is not is in pristine condition. It was a white mitsubishi. Outlander other looked like there was no damage to the car. Theres no ash on the car so it looks really you know for you obviously the witness that the police immediately responding then all of that unfolding, you know thoughts with the officers right now, yeah, yeah. I mean they they were handling the situation really calmly there is no unanimity was reaching for a weapon, but the guy obviously did not want to be. Looking up. They will thank you for taking time i know all of his very traumatic for you this morning yeah, stopping everybody, however it is cool okay. Okay just arrived on scene right now as you can see i think go ahead and zoom in here for you. You guys can just see kind of whats going on still very active scene behind me. And as we know officers right now in the hospital. Currently after all of this unfolding. We just spoke to a witness who describes what happened she describes the vehicle, theyre all white lisa be sheets so we still know that suspect is still outstanding you can see the officers are still here on scene investigating everything thats going on right now all of this unfolded. Still trying to get some Background Information on exactly what happened that we just spoke to the woman who saw the man who looked like he was asleep and had you know his vehicle had driven to careen into one of the trees right here on scene and thats when the officers responded to everything that happened so they have a 12 street. Here in oakland. Says 24 east 9. 80 east freeway right here so as of right now this person could be anywhere with freeway being so close in proximity. So were going to be on scene well be bringing you guys the very latest and any updated information that we get but again just ordeal that you know started one way and ended with 2 officers being injured this morning. So we need to get an update on those officers and ill bring that information as soon as it becomes available, but for now reporting here in oakland reyna harvey kron 4 news thank you for the update right and theres a crash in the east bay, a man was struck and killed by a car when he ran across 8. 80 in oakland it happened. Monday night near the 7th street exit. As the man ran across the highway isaac or 10. And he was running from the Center Divide across all lanes of the freeway when he was struck the driver of the car that hit him pulled over and called 911. A san leandro officer is charged with fatally shooting a black man in a walmart and we have cell phone video from the day that it happened back in april officer Jason Fletcher was responding to a call in that was walmart. And. The man Jason Fletcher. They officers charged with killing Stephen Taylor after a taylor. Was holding something but fletcher they say used Excessive Force. The call was for a shoplifter so he responded that he saw Taylor Holding a bag. But again they deemed Excessive Force officer fletcher is set to have his next hearing on this. Later this month. Last several years wildfires have gained a reputation for a growing more and more intense multiple factors have contributed to the fires becoming as deadly an all encompassing. As theyve been recently Climate Change being one of them. We have meteorologist austin evans now with a closer look several of the worst wildfires in history are currently burning in the western u. S. There are a lot of factors to blame one of which is Climate Change. So wildfires need a couple ingredients right they need really hot weather. And they need. Dry conditions and so what were seeing. You know year after year after year is that temperatures are increasing. Noaa just released some data august 2020 was the second warmest. August on record for the entire globe. California just had its hottest august on record there are several direct correlations between Climate Change and these increasingly intense wildfires. Were emitting Carbon Dioxide and president of levels. Coming next as we house gas and the more we put into the atmosphere, the warmer its going to get thats what weve been seeing we know this for a long time thats whats happening. When its warmer. Is apple transporation increases so the soils and the plants they dry up. More quickly when its warmer and though Climate Change is not the sole cause for these wildfires sure isnt helping the problem. Its important to recognize that Climate Change isnt causing these wildfires. Right. Its incredibly likely that these wildfires would have taken place regardless. Whats happening is that were in and sing them. And the fires causing all about air which weve been dealing with you know a month straight and then yesterday we finally got to bring and Going Forward a guest gets a little better for a short period time john exactly weve got a nice chance to open those windows get outside breathe easy for at least a few days ahead of us. Daria as you mentioned yesterday was a huge improvement today even better yet looking at your walnut creek am nice and bright out there we do have some cloud cover overhead but that is not smoke, youre looking at as air quality is good for the vast majority of the bay area, the yellow that youre seeing on screen are pockets of moderate well you had for the stun land up to the Central Valley and thats where youre still looking at some poor conditions skies will be dry across the bay today and after our greater start to the morning. We do have lots of sunshine to anticipate later on a slow moving frontal boundary as a low pressure slides directly to our north is the reason behind this coastal flow which is really swept up the smoke and haze the past few days helping to push it out of the region at least for the bay area itself. This cold front will advance through this weekend resulting in a slight drop in temperatures as well as further cleaning up the air into thursday and friday after that winds relax and in fact we have hot inland winds that will push back into the bay come sunday could push some smoke back into the region so do enjoy this nice air quality well we do have it light winds off the coast this morning. The reason were seeing the clouds and the reason were seeing that air 60s and 70s for your daytime highs later on right along the coastline. We will have cloud cover later than the rest of the bay area which will be experiencing sunshine by noontime today and holding on to it for the rest of the day. 80s for most of our inland spots with 70s for most bayside areas. Areas like the east bay freemont union city and hayward in the 70s while the tri valley through conquered in walnut creek. Well up into the 80s very similar to yesterday. 80s for the north bay with vacaville your closest spot to 90 degrees. Im not expecting you to get there though, and tomorrow will be just a touch cooler for inland areas as will be friday and saturday too as i mentioned after these next few clear smokefree days. We do see the resurgence of some smoke likely on into sunday. So do enjoy the clean air. Robin. All right, thank you john, lets head over to the bay bridge were checking in on 80 which continues to improve heading into San Francisco. So not so bad for those of you who have to use westbound 80 definitely much better compared to the last hour its going to be slow off and on from right around west grand leading up to the pay gates, but this is still a pretty commute. We have a fog advisory still in place for the Golden Gate Bridge so be careful here heading across the span 19 minutes novato to San Francisco, but no big trouble spots there and were getting word of a structure fire in oakland or between downtown oakland in west oakland, this is near 7th and webster that huge plume of smoke is a visual distraction for people on the so if youre heading to the bay bridge, the oakland maze or 8. 18 you see this huge plume of smoke that is whats causing the traffic there northbound its already stacked up from fruit bill approaching downtown oakland we still have more details coming in about this fire. So well have that for you in just a bit. Meanwhile, its impacting your drive times 16 minutes from san leandro to downtown oakland and a crash in pittsburgh highway 4 arrests westbound Near Railroad has traffic crawling backed up a couple of miles the any outside looks good. The concord sign with good. Its just jam right there through pittsburgh, so 35 minutes for one 60 out to 2. 42 james all right robin thank you.
