Fours will tran has been getting these numbers and updated in live from the cal fire base in Scotts Valley. Well. So unfortunately that number gone up has gone up james and area, the containment number has not gone up still sitting at 19 containment, but they will take it because the acreage has not exploded look at this this fog here they love seeing this fog. It brings moisture rises the humidity raises the humidity and it brings it cooler makes a cooler for the firefighters who are working so hard to put out these fires. Let me show you some video of whats going on the fires continue to burn through santa cruz and san mateo counties right now were sitting at 80,138 acres thats only up however, 1000 acres from yesterday so these controlled burns that theyre doing. Its slowing down the fire eating through the hillside. So well see the numbers exploding. Unfortunately, the evacuees still not allowed to return at this time. But the hope is over the next day or so they will change the Evacuation Orders into evacuation warnings which means that you can return and that you are responsible for whatever happens to you so thats a little bit of good news for the evacuees and were talking about more than 77,000 people have been evacuated. Cal fire they had a News Conference a little bit earlier this morning which we carried live for you on the kron 00 04am morning news. Heres their happiness over their progression. The past couple days weve been able to make a significant progress on our fire fight. Weve been able to establish more lines can to improve those lines that we have establ that has not been evacuated dont be so alarmed those are more than likely controlled burns and those controlled burns are eating up to the vegetation in a controlled way so they want to get rid of it so when the fire moves there theres nothing left to burn for the fire which is why the stuxnet significantly slowed it down also helping the controlled burns. The sky there sending aircraft into the air and they expect another day of doing each day james and area they have dumped about 256,000 gallons of water every day just to give you perspective since this fire started on the days that they were able to go up in the air. So far they have dumped 100 excuse me one 0. 6 million gallons of water down to the fire and they expect to do more today back to you. All right, thanks a lot. Well. Also that fire the czu fire did go through the states oldest park in california. These are pictures of the Big Basin Redwoods State Park and what it looks like right now you can see some of the burned charred out. Trees there. Some of these redwood trees are close to 2000 years old and some of them did survive. So what theyre doing now is theyre going to look at the damage done to the trees and those that didnt topple over they can re sprout. So theyre going to be inspecting those trees in the coming days. Well continue our Team Coverage of jump to the north bay the lnu complex fires burning in and around Lake Berryessa and then you can see that large patch to the left there in sonoma county. These fires are burning across sonoma and napa and solano counties where nowak of those been evacuated portions of it anyway, proper Sarah Stinson is live in napa county with a closer look and some of the damage. Were seeing now with the morning sun sarah. James flames once roared above lake area so were im at right now and now you can see the charred land that is left and the burned down homes you can also see the homes that was that were spared by the flames look at the damage you can see lots of rubble and that is all that is left of some of these homes. And you can also see the terrain up here above Lake Berryessa were here on black oak lane off of from rock drive. And the look at this this is a perfect example you can see this home in the distance. It was spared by the flames, but you can see what a close call this was charred land all around it in yet it survived yet right across the way on this other ridge this home was not as lucky, you can see nothing quite left here at all, but then down the road here on black oak lane you can see those homes down there. They were able to stay standing in survive, so fires just not fair its its just crazy when you see. What burned and what didnt we do have good news for you though, at least were one step closer to people being able to return home because the more cal fire. Gets containment on the ellen new lightning complex the more people can be able to get let back into their communities. Its now 33 contained you can see in the video that i shot up on this Vantage Point i hiked up there show you just how this terrain is this home above Lake Berryessa and then all of the hills surrounding Lake Berryessa charred and burned, we know that so far. As i said we have a 33 contained. Its burned 357,000 acres and ellen you lightning complex and the hennessy fire which is where im at right now in napa county thats burned 80 of the total acres burned up here in the north bay hundreds of people evacuated from their homes when the fires first erupted over a week ago and ever since theyve been just standing by trying to be patient trying to ease their anxiety wondering what will be left this will be the most difficult part just the weeks coming where people go to their properties should i say and see if theres a home remaining 978 structures have been destroyed in this complex a complex and weve met a lot of people along the way who have described what theyre going through saying they just have this got in there feeling full, they have is the clothes left on their back and theres still some containment to go here we only have a 3rd of it contained in this complex in there still over 30,000 structures at risk but from my Vantage Point it looks like were in the recovery mode, im not seeing any active but theyre still working on containing it putting out hot spots in this area you can see i saw earlier a few hot spots smoldering. But the drive in here on highway one 21 1. 28 that are still closed off to the public. You can really get a good idea of how much burned when you hear the number 357,000 acres put in tell you see it with your own eyes. It just doesnt seem real now theres a press conference coming up at 11 oclock today and hopefully theyll give us a better idea of what they can do to try and contain this more and with their plan of attack is for the l a new lightning complex but for now ill send it back to you guys in the newsroom. All right, thanks latter. So lets head over to the east bay now we have the story of a local family sharing their pain after the scu complex fire ripped through their portion of livermore and decimated their property of the fires tore through the hills and minds or the hills i should say in the minds road area of livermore burning homes, displacing a number of families dominique friehling and his girlfriends family purchased this property for years ago and the family says their house. Well it didnt make it nearly everything is gone. Theyre just getting to the line a sleigh really doing a lot of there and then like this kindly. And the state has to read packed what we could the jeep was full to the brim we got everything that starts clothing in looking for documents but everything has pretty much their pictures and stuff like that. Well when they went to survey the damage of the weekend they were happy to find their cat you see. Kept their names tina she survived the fire but i see nothing else did. We have an interactive map on our website. The shows you all the different areas that the fires had hid and what the control or are they a containment numbers are right now as well as evacuation centers. That are open and one who is either our mornings or advisories that they should be out already so take a look at kron 4 dot com for very latest well be talking about how firefighters of mention that the weather has been sort of beneficial for them here. Yesterday, it looks like we may get im more of that to come here. John yeah finally guys weather cooperating and has definitely been beneficial last night an will again be tonight as we are seeing a nice deep marine layer pushing in across the bay pushing in some cool air and obviously a lot of fog across the bay area this morning, especially near the coast and into the east bay, this is definitely helped overnight with firefighting efforts. Well continue to do so into tomorrow too. Air quality has improved as well, especially near the coast now we still do have a couple of unhealthy pockets out in the east bay, especially right around vacaville and fairfield and once you head into the Santa Cruz Mountains of the south bay. You also run into some unhealthy pockets, but overall most of us have definitely enjoyed some relief from some of these hazy or conditions, 50s and 60s for current temperatures, its a cooler start to the morning and that eventually leads into a cooler finish to the day just around the corner and as sunshine returns a better chance to get outside today and not worry as much about the smoke as for the east bay right now nice and calm winds same for you in the south bay as that. Smoke has been replaced by a lot of fog pushing into the Santa Cruz Mountains which has certainly been nice. Daytime highs only in the 90s for a couple of cities while most of us in the 60s 70s or 80s. James. Thank you very much got coming up next doctor on the kron 4 morning news. Were just days. Well days after his death sentence was overturned jurors in the Scott Peterson case speak out well have more on that in a minute and hundreds of families forced from their homes because of the wildfires now the area businesses are stepping up to help and heres a quick live look outside the san mateo bridge. Were against a little foggy on the peninsula sign. Well have more weather and traffic and headlines coming up in a moment. In the buzz, the nba bubble is keeping players safe from coronavirus but that doesnt mean they are immune from whats happening on the outside. While the clippers were busy beating the mavericks in orlando, black lives matter demonstrators were under fire. In kenosha wisconsin. A man with a rifle. And reza review, not just what it feels like so very joining. Tries fred van fleet says that the next step may be a boycott. The raptors and the celtics are considering not playing their game. Tomorrow night lebron james has been outspoken but has not gone that far the lakers and the blazers are set to play game. 00 05am tonight is and baseball victory for the giants and the as and it was all the sweeter for San Francisco since they beat l a. And the empty stands on the fake crowd goes wild as Donovan Solano hits the walkoff tworun homer in the 11th inning making it 10 to 8 and 7 wins in a row. For the giants theyll take on the dodgers again tonight at oracle hayes hit the gas and texas in the 4th inning and never looked back they beat the rangers 10 to 3 and they finish out their series tonight. The fortyniners will start their season with no fans the team Just Announced that nobodys going to get to see their home opener against the cardinals on september 13th whether youre welcome to come later that depends on how it goes with covid and its not going well in college just days into the new school year many universities are already sounding the alarm. The biggest covid blow up so far is at the university of alabama where more than 560 students tested positive in just the first week. And you can see why with all of these bars and restaurants packed and hardly anybody following the rules, you know youre supposed to do wear a mask, wash your hands and dont lick your fingers, even if youre eating kfc Kentucky Fried Chicken which prides itself on being Finger Lickin good is blurring out its famous slogan because they dont want to catch covid now theyre not saying you have to use a knife and a fork but at least a napkin james. And i really want to eat Fried Chicken with a knife and a fork you and i know this about you i think you eat pizza that way too bars to that is an american just a front for right now, but now look whos laughing its true. But you know what thats the least of our problems is looking fingers when you have these college kids, yeah, bring the rules well i was talking to high send tore off to school right and before he even checked in to the dorms they all had a rapid covid test. You know 15 minutes find out then youre negative then you can check it. But the problem is like for example usc its People Living off campus right now those kids are not going through the same rigorous and so. Theres friday and we dont realize offcampus parties and i mean we saw this coming these are kids that have been. Cooped up all summer long for a lot of them first year off to college. Yeah expect them to stay in the dorm. It was unrealistic for us to expect that they were going to hate themselves. Well with an honor those universities that are having a really strict. Almost like a closed campus like their own bubbles. Like the nba is doing some are doing that and those kids the odds of them following the rules are going to be much greater mean i have to wait to see i want updates. Or is that how things are goin were still talking about what james each with a knife and fork and everybody else uses their hands for corn on the cob did corn on the cob yeah, but the little holders in there just mouth, you cant touch anything can holders are made for just. This is these are all births these are the holders james civilized get over to john john help when you eat with a knife and fork that other people look think the way i might just be the opposite of s of it yeah i think its something theyll get back to good news in this forecast today guys and finally right because weve just been seeing problem after problem with these forecasts the smoke, the haze the dry lightning that we had been seeing all that really have been cleared out at least for now this morning were pretty free of haze, its just a foggy start to the day for most of us that fog was nice and welcome though was a very dense marine layer that skewed in over the bay overnight brought us fog brought us cooler temperatures and relief to firefighting efforts all across the bay area with relatively calm winds too. Now this afternoon, some of the smoke is going to settle back down it already is in the Central Valley and some of our inland valleys so do watch out for hayes yet again later on today. But overall much more mild day and air quality in general has improved as we make our way into the evening tonight, another push of fog with the cool coastal breeze will be pushing back inland. Its going help to sweep things out yet again and make for what should be a pretty solid morning as far as air quality goes again for your thursday mornings, this is all good stuff to be talking about firefighters are welcoming this forecast with open arms 60s for your highs in San Francisco as well as right along the coastline today with temperatures on long the baby mostly in the 70s some really nice conditions seeing carlos redwood City Mountain view each in the low 80s. Well in the south bay talking mid 80s for most areas, san jose 84. Morgan hill near 9088. Temperatures in the tri valley a tease for you know 90s insight there while free might union city and hayward all the way up through oakland, a nice range of 70s concord up to 88 today and only to 90s in your 4 zone forecast thats antioch and vacaville at 91 each fully hope beautiful at 77 petaluma nevado in the low 80s today. Now tomorrows temperatures will be just a couple of degrees warmer really not much of a change as i mentioned we will still have a nice cool marine layer thats going to be pushed inland overnight tonight bringing overnight really can some fog tomorrow morning friday and saturday will be some of our warmer days of this forecast, but again not by much and really not a lot of triple digits if any insight ahead of us and all that is definitely good news. James safely john just got worse theres no traffic its not the traffic gets worse by james ease. Burrito with the knife and because they eat them all together in need if its to stop the other all i can do i can stand i i like maple bars and it gets pretty anyway. I dont need to justify myself to you too haha years all right is known anyway there is no traffic so thats the best news. Weve got you want what you want to look in san mateo bridge little testing san mateo bridge looks great as well. All in all not a bad commute around the bay area this morning that i do think theres lets get back to the news. Time now is 8. 24. Now we do have hundreds of families that have lost just about everything in the lnu complex fires that are burning in the north bay. And now Business Owners in vacaville are coming together to help those affected we have Jessica Mensch with the story. So kids shoes theyre guided their its a shopping spree of sorts. We need the but these evacuees wont have to pay a dime to help people that have lost everything and is the clothes on their backs donations are pouring in from the back of the community for victims of lightning complex fires like Kathy Johnson and her 10 yearold granddaughter ruby on pounds. Hes gone we couldnt even get her car keys are afraid and didnt take off. And now its really hard you should know that its all gone it spy Business Owners like ashley tapper stepping in her vacaville boutique rise in redemption joined forces with where toast coffee together these donations. Lastly just said its my love language and so when something happens like i dont wait for somebody asked me for help i feel like i just jumped out and we start something or get people involved in less than a week theyve been able to fill this building in downtown vacaville with toys toiletries clothing and much more. She says monetary donations and gift cards are most useful so they can ensure evacuees get what they really need theyve been able to 8 at least 70 families so far. And hearing those stories has just been what has made me fall this health is quitting families back together wasnt for them i dont think id be able to in while the fire took so much this family is just grateful to have their loved ones by their side all family means more than money or a giant house because as long as we have you know were going to be okay. All right well that was just commit reporting for us this morning fire evacuees can pick up donations at 300 main st. In vacaville. The time now is 8. 26 and still ahead coming up next. If you cant afford your medicine, abbvie may be able to help. Going into our second week with these firefighters up against the fires that theyre battling all over the bay, including sonoma county. Where weve got the lsu fire. Yeah we want to focus on those fires right now. Joining us on the phone to help us get a better understanding with situation is like this morning with Sergeant Juan valencia with the sonoma county. The Sheriffs Office sergeant of lets you thank you so much for joining us this morning. How are things as you understand it. A good morning, thank you for having me so as of this morning in the walk bridge fire has burned that 54,923 acres 19 contained. The myers fire had burned about 20 little 2300 acres and 97 contained the fire that was burning need area jenner out the coast or continue to see the work with cal fire to get a you know most important thing keep people out of the area and keeping them so were walked in on a right now is what areas are stay for whatever is can we start populating have you had any you refer to the you know, thats the biggest challenge is handling people getting them out have you had any problems as it pertains to the evacuations and relocating. No no im we this is our 3rd fire or are big part of the county. And yes we do have some people that do not want to leave the residents up from you know our fears we always tell people that you know the part will not guarantee never going to make every option we cant go near. Them if we can and you know if thats something that could have been prevented by the meat and. Let me ask you to weve heard from ah the folks battling the fires down a san Mateo Santa Cruz counties this morning as well and they said that they have had to take into custody, some bad actors who are taking advantage of the situation down there have you guys noticed anything similar up in sonoma county. You it weve had weve made one arrest for a person interviewed a disaster area and now a couple days ago own i dont and granville. So these so weve had now about a 150 Law Enforcement officer and that includes. La agency in Francisco Police department kept kosher of this better rovers us overnight by roe versus the raw patrolling the area, theres a spot to check points in 31 proactive Law Enforcement are going out or contacting people that are involved. Evacuation areas and if youre doing something illegal and theyre interactive europe. Allard it is ok though is it or is it not ok for people to go in. Who live in the area and see if their homes left standing because sometimes they say well, you know theres Certain Homes burned certain not but we cant let you back in yet to find out which is yours. Yes, the are not forced to go back and some of the people that have contacted in most areas refused to leave so they are told they have to leave. And that there were you know we have to pick a passion about thing people we understand a peep are frustrated, theyre scared theyre concerned about the property back antecipated or your life is the most important thing you can you can replace property cant replace a person right as people who are looking at the video like were showing and you know they can see. That theres homes that are burning the thinking is that my cars at my house or is it the neighbors. Its that kind of confusion that you know they want to they want to get in there and see it and you can understand that. Ap absolutely we had one surgeon loses in the fire. Weve had other always hear that word new Evacuation Order a they had to get up and back up and leave so yet we keep i understand the frustration the. Being 80 that comes with that as well as you know its my own schools and so yes, so we you know we take all that into consideration that we can Public People i cant do the areas just because of. We really be a theres a lot of fire up orders a live wires that are down like that of those just to keep keep the place. And weve been hearing from the fire side, how mutual aid outside resource in the coming in you talk about how youve got Law Enforcement from other agencies helping out of patrolling as well do you feel like youre getting enough resources to you or you staffed enough to handle the situation. I guess we feel that on the Law Enforcement side were getting water resources. But you also have local agencies in sonoma better help and so just to give you an example so the county of 1701,007 ill take. I mean that in a minute but a lot of us. We wrote to cover in and keep safe. So im thats why we have 150 Law Enforcement personnel working each day to keep the Community Safe while and we were just looking at some of the roadways. And theres all and also that line that you have to decide do you think its going to jump a road. I mean i just saw in the leg last video strip that we showed it was it was burning in the media and cars are going by on either side so you have to decide you know when do we close down the road and and how close we let this get before we will say you cant pass by here anymore. Yeah not a consideration and thats what we did our job fire because cal fire and local Law Enforcement local Fire Agencies are the the expert on fire or be a bird the wind weather down there at the expert says thats a week we sit down with them at the table and basically speaker out look at models oh its going to happen. So we we plan ahead and if we have it timed on our side. We would rather. And ahead then we get everything or everyone out of the way from cape the fire just do that youre not concerned about you know were not or those resources off the fire lines for duty back away. Shes okay. Thanks so much. We appreciate the this morning and as we said there is a little bit of good news for not only this fire, but all the fires in the bay area because were getting a little window. There its a little bit cooler and that can only help you absolutely john in the Weather Center with more on that yeah finally talking, good news guys which i know firefighters are welcoming with open arms thats where the rest of us that weve got some relief. From the haze and smoke today, were just looking at fog out there over sfo right now and even a little bit of sunshine breaking its way through. Fog is still a pretty president over in the east bay hills and right along the coastline, coastal areas will see it into the afternoon while the rest of us get some good clearing conditions as far as air quality goes take a look at this most of us are actually going to be on the moderate to good side of things now even spots in the east bay will be good as well. But there are going to be some unhealthy areas of eventually our inland valleys not going to be so great nor really will be areas like vacaville and fairfield which are already starting the morning will be less than ideal conditions. 50s and 60s are current temperatures a nice cool start to the day dublin in pittsburgh at 62 each. I feel that 60 degrees know 70s insight, nothing even close to it i think were all enjoying that cool down. Fog will remain at the coast as i mentioned to them over the coastal drizzle in fact even being seen and our Higher Elevations on the peninsula. Daytime highs later today going to be mostly in the 70s to 80s just a couple of 90s in the math like in areas like antioch 91 degrees hayward Oakland Fremont billy hope all in the 70s. James all right john thank you to take a quick break here to 37 coming up on the kron 4 morning news first lady. And the nations top diplomat were making. The case for another term for President Trump in night to the rnc well have a recap of all of that coming up in just a minute. Also just days after resuming Operations Community is now shutting down its rail service in San Francisco with Details Behind that decision when we come back. Heres a quick live look outside we have our camera here at the toll plaza for the Richmond Sandra fell bridge. So far traffic moving fairly well well be right back. And 41 muni riders going to be riding the bus for some time to calm and San Francisco transit Officials Say there are 2 problems that are keeping them from relaunching the rail service and the equipment to some problems and covid19. At our Transportation Management center, its the nerve center of our entire rail system. We had an test covid positive. We followed our standard Contact Tracing quarantine procedures and as a result of we were concerned that we would not have the whole necessary team to be able to run the rail system safely. So there are not going to err on the rails for the meantime the alternative for muni riders is using the all bus system that has been in place since april. Well good news finally in this forecast air quality having some big improvements, especially for the coast. We will have some unhealthy spots for inland valleys of the east bay vacaville, not the best for you this morning, ive got more on your forecast still to come. And were back time now 8. 44 the first lady and the nations top diplomat were among those making the case for another term for President Trump last night karin caifa is live in washington with a recap of the highlights from the second night of the Republican National convention. Melania trump, a reluctant campaigner making a case for her husband just. As you are fighting for their families. My husband, our family and the people in this administration. Im here fighting for you the first ladys speech part of a convention outreach to women voters particularly in suburban swing districts. Also speaking tuesday night making an appeal to young voters, the president s daughter tiffany trump, my father has made me believe that america can truly be great again President Trump again appeared multiple times including presiding over a naturalization ceremony announcing the pardon of jon ponder a convicted bank robber who now works to help the formerly incarcerated reintegrate into society. Johns life is a beautiful testament to the power of redemption another headliner secretary of state mike pompeo who touted trumps Foreign Policy record in remarks taped in jerusalem as President Trump has put his America First vision into action may not have made him popular in every foreign capital. But its worked. Pompeo speeches, drawn scrutiny and criticism for its departure from state Department Protocol and prompting a House Democrat to look into whether he violated the hatch act which prevents federal employees from engaging in partisan politics while on duty in washington, im karin caifa. 8. 46 is the time right now and were taking a look at the weather getting a little bit of a break yeah john give us the good news. Yeah, i love talking about good news guys because weve been talking just the opposite too much lately looking out there at berkeley we do have some cloud cover as low clouds and fog push into the bay area. Welcome change from where we had been this cool deep marine layer pushed in last night youll likely notice that air quality gradually really improved by the finish of yesterday now were kicking off your wednesday with some good conditions for most areas. Theres some problem areas around vacaville and santa cruz that you want to watch out for as far as air quality right now as we make our way into the afternoon, some of that smoke is going to settle back down into our inland valleys making for yet again some hazy skies for some of us mild conditions overall though and as we make our way through the day you will definitely notice temperatures feeling a little bit cooler weather at the coast or further inland. Daytime highs, not near as hot as they have been tonight, well get another push of fog sweeping on into the bay area and the School Marine breeze will help to sweep out some of our por air quality yet again as well offer up some nice moisture right along the coastline and into the bay that will help with firefighting efforts so continuing to see good news and your thursday, 60s for your highs and San Francisco as well as right along the coastline today 70s for most bayside areas with burlingame at 77 degrees today palo alto at 78 redwood City Mountain view inn saying carlos each in the low 80s. Well 80s down into the south bay to san jose a 84 today 70s in Fremont Union city the word up to oakland while 80s from the tri valley through walnut creek and up to concord only to 90s on the map thats for can vacaville some of our not so good air quality in the same spots too. So its business as usual for the Central Valley in areas right along the east side of the bay petaluma and santa rosa 82 on the votto 83. Tomorrow temperatures will be a little bit warmer just a couple of degrees up from today really not a noticeable difference though friday and saturday will be year warmer days of this forecast also abundantly sunny. Before temperatures come back down to where were at today and tomorrow by the beginning of next week. James. All right, heres a quick live look at the bay bridge. Thank you john as we check traffic still looks fantastic for you this it did get back up a bit during the 6 oclock hour but by 7. 45. It was all done. And here you see continuing good conditions for you if you make your way in from oakland in the San Francisco via the bay bridge. Heres a look at the Richmond Sandra fell bridge and this has been a pleasant ride all morning. No problems here with a traffic moving without having a slowdown whatsoever as you make your way through the toll plaza and often in marin county. If youre in marin county heading down into San Francisco cross the Golden Gate Bridge gets a little foggy but otherwise thats about it. Its just the fog that might be causing you to take a little slower than normal otherwise, youre looking good. Its the 49 big story that were following this morning just days after a Court Reversed the Death Penalty for Scott Peterson were hearing from some people who served on the jury on that case and they say they stand by the penalty they handed down Marissa Perlman has the latest. John says the jury was asked only 2 questions do you believe in the Death Penalty and can you follow the law. He thinks thats enough. Even the penalty phase years later they both stand by sentencing peterson to death for john it was seeing the autopsy photos that pushed him to vote that way. Its here so. It was something that still scarred their mind forever because. Scott was responsible for that effort and to take 2 lives. Healthy. And yes, will yes. That was Melissa Perlman reporting. Well happening today in the east bay Contra Costa Health services will be opening a new coronavirus testing site in richmond it will be located at the parking lot of richmonds.
