Hi, im joan lunden. Just 20 years ago, type 2 diabetes in children was unheard of. In fact, it used to be called adult onset diabetes, but not anymore. Inactivity, being overweight, and a Family History are all things that could lead to a diabetes diagnosis. If you feel that your family is at risk, then the first step to prevent type 2 diabetes is to make over the family meal. So, joining us is dr. Ann albright, director of the cdcs division of diabetes translation, and jennifer stack, a registered dietician from the Culinary Institute of america. How do you make yummy meals that are still healthy . One of my favorite tips is a technique i call rub and roast. You take your chicken, you take your meat, you take your fish, even your vegetables, and using a saltfree seasoning blend, theres lots of different flavor profiles available, rub it all over the meat or the food. Put it in a hot oven to cook. It has a lot more flavor, and you dont need to use a lot of salt in preparing it. So, you just replaced all the salt and the butter and all the oils and everything with another flavor. And it brings out flavors that were not gonna get when were using the butter and the oil to cook. So, i encourage people, save the oil for a little bit of salad dressing that you could put not only on your salad. You could put it over those roasted vegetables. Ann, youve been managing your diabetes your whole life since you were a young child. What happens when you go out to dinner .
