A homeowner is in the hospital and a pair of armed intruders is on the run. But as kiet do shows us, one of the suspects may be wounded. Reporter the white pieces of paper mark the spots where police found significant amounts of blood. Its one of the biggest clues that the homeowner has pretty good aim. There is some indication that a suspect may have been shot. Reporter it began around 12 45 a. M. When the elderly man whom neighbors say is a retired contractor was home with his wife. Police say at least two men broke into the house on the 2100 block of lakeview drive attempting to pull off a Home Invasion robbery. But the homeowner apparently pulled out a shotgun and fired three rounds. During the shootout, the homeowner was hit, went to the hospital with critical but nonlifethreatening injuries. The suspects took off running and apparently bleeding. So we surrounded the house, called our s. W. A. T. Team. They went into the house and cleared the house. We did not find any suspects in the house. Scary. Very scary. Reporter the attack has shaken this welltodo neighborhood where even police say there is little crime but the neighbors have a message for wouldbe crooks. Youre going to get shot thats my opinion. I have a pistol in my bedroom. Somebody breaks in my house, theyre gonna get it first. Reporter the crime scene investigators will be here for at least a couple more hours. In the meantime San Leandro Police have increased patrols in the area. In san leandro, kiet do, kpix 5. Police have not made any arrests and have not released the detailed description of the suspects. Breaking news this noon. Former 49er ray mcdonald has been charged with a felony after allegedly attacking his exfiancee. Mcdonald is accused of breaking into the womans bedroom while she was sleeping last may. Attorneys say then he assaulted her. Mcdonalds driver was there and trying to stop him. Attorneys say he eventually left the scene and thats when police were called. Mcdonald is free on bail but he will face a san jose judge this afternoon. Panic on a bart train. Passengers broke out windows when a fire filled a train with smoke. Thousands of passengers were left stranded as bart trains came to a screeching halt in the east bay. Kpix 5s anne makovec with a look at what went wrong. Reporter bart trains have been singletracking through this area near the Fruitvale Station since around 9 00 this morning. And they still have to figure out exactly what went wrong. This train car was the scene of a real scare for about 50 passengers just after 4 30 this morning. It seems like a sudden explosion. There was some sort of arcing event where the third rail power created a big flash and a lot of smoke. Reporter it happened on an elevated section of track between the fruitvale and coliseum stations. You can see parts of the car were blackened and a broken window where passengers tried to get air or get out. Three people ended up in the hospital, two complaining of smoke inhalation. Another was injured trying to escape. Right now were not sure when its going to open. Reporter as three bart lines shut down, thousands of bart passengers were faced with closed stations for most of the morning commute. Im just trying to get home. I just got off work. Reporter ac transit buses helped with a bus bridge, but it was an inconvenient surprise for many. I wish i had checked this morning. Reporter for those who find themselves in any future train emergency, bart says listen to the operator. They are emergency responsiblers First Responders in constant communication with the control center. And their first task is to make sure everyone is safe. Reporter this is the same area of track where they have been doing track work on several weekends this year. They just finished up that work. No word yet on whether or not todays issue is related. In oakland, anne makevoc, kpix 5. Service to Oakland International airport was also affected but it was restored by 9 a. M. Shower taps are running dry. California beaches, the state Parks Department shut off public showers at state beaches to conserve water during the drought. The agencys leader says that the change should save about 18 million gallons of water a year. The restrictions apply only to outdoor showers rinse stations. Some of the beaches include Half Moon Bay state beach, twin lakes, sunset state, seacliff, Salinas River and pacifica state beaches. Some of the countrys most Popular National parks cant escape the grip of the drought. Danielle nottingham with how popular tourist destinations including Yosemite National park will look very different to tourists this summer. Reporter the tallest waterfall in north america looks more like a trickle. The rocks behind this, completely wet. Reporter this tourist is visiting yosemite as it struggles through its driest year ever and the signs are everywhere. What are the biggest differences youre seeing in the park because of the drought . What were seeing is the waterfalls are much lower than they would be this time of year. Reporter with the Sierra Snowpack at a record low, the ranger says Yosemite Falls is expected to run dry two months early. Tourists will have to skip activities like rafting when that happens. The parks main river is at least three feet below normal and bark beetles are killing off thousands of waterstarved trees. We have droughtstressed trees. We have dry soil conditions. If we get any summer thundershowers, all of this is, you know, a recipe for to us have some, you know, problems with fire. Reporter in the mojave desert, joshua tree National Park has the same wildfire concerns. Rainfall is scarce, and the parks iconic trees are dying. Joshua trees arent going to entirely disappear. Right now the park looks lush and green compared to what it will look like in a couple of months. Reporter the drought isnt stopping millions from visiting both parks. By the way, Yosemite Falls runs dry in mid to late august during a normal year of rainfall there. The South Carolina governor is scheduled to sign a bill today that would remove the Confederate Flag at the state capital. Lawmakers approved the bill this morning after 13 hours of debate. The decision follows weeks of protests sparked when nine people were killed by a gunman who posed with a Confederate Flag. After the governor signs the bill, the flag will be taken down tomorrow morning. Donald trump is not backing down from his controversial comments about mexican immigrants. The celebrity businessman who is running for the republican president ial nomination stood by his remarks in a series of interviews. His remarks prompted a call from the head of the Republican National committee florida senator marco rubio saying trump does not speak for the gop. He will have to respond to his own comments. I disagree with them, they are inaccurate, offensive and divisive. Today a protest is planned outside the latest trump hotel scheduled to open in dc next year. Trump plans to campaign this weekend in states with large latino populations. Friends and family will pay tribute to kate steinle this afternoon at a private Memorial Service in pleasanton. Steinle is the woman who was killed on a San Francisco pier last week. The 32yearold was a graduate of Amador Valley high school. Steinles family is seeking donations through the go fund me website. Her brother brad says money will go toward charities important to his sister including the challenged Athletes Foundation and the performing Animal Welfare society. More than 33,000 have been raised so far. The condition of one of the surviving victims from last months balcony collapse in berkeley is improving. The 21yearold woman from dublin, ireland, is still in intensive care but has been taken off the critical list. She is slowly coming out of an induced coma. But ill show you where it is currently raining all that as the news continues right here on kpix 5. We are less than 10 hours away from a major closure in San Francisco doyle drive. It shuts down tonight at 10 00 and opens on monday morning at 5 a. M. Traffic jams are likely during that period. Its main approach to and from the Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco side. Everything in red will be closed. The project is six years in the making. We are asking people to avoid it because it could be a mess. And the final connecting work will allow drivers to use all four of the new tunnels not just the one that already opened. And drivers on highway 1 can use the new ramp to head toward the marina. Theres good news for beach goers and for that matter lottery players, i guess. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting attacked by a shark. Stanford researchers say theres been a 90 decline in shark attacks in the past six decades. They say the riskiest time to be in the water is between october and november. Thats when the sharks are migrating. Best time is between march and may. There have been 12 shark attacks in north and South Carolina this year. I think ill stay out of the water. I wonder why theres been 90 fewer attacks. Thats interesting. In hawaii they have done such a great job with trying to, um, preserve the sea turtle population. That they have more shark attacks now because thats food for the sharks. Due east we have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of lightning strikes in the greater lake tahoe area with the Flash Flood Watch posted for reno to the east but meanwhile i wanted to share that with you because its wraparound moisture so from the high sierra it could drift back over here into the north bay. Look at the widespread rain showers from clearlake all the way into bodega bay at this hour. Petaluma is hearing raindrops on the rooftops. And that drizzle that dana was reporting, thats in novato at this hour. This is incredible. This is our live weather camera atop mount vaca. And this rain is all associated with the marine layer. So it gives you a good indication its marched inland at least a good 50 miles. Temperatures currently in the 60s and now 70 in livermore. Its 62 in San Francisco. We are seeing this heavy drizzle from a marine layer thats been roughly about 3,000 feet deep. And it has surged inland. We will see some sunny breaks today and that makes the air mass unstable. And well still keep a chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon forecast we have the core the center of the area of low pressure around here around coalinga. It drifts into the back door of the north bay so we have to keep the chance of a thunderstorm in the forecast, as well. We can see some of the blowoff from that wraparound moisture. That traverses out and we still season the back side of it a chance of rain but its keeping us cool. 81 today in sacramento. 86 fresno with a thunderstorm. In fact, we saw that this morning. But Vineet Kosaraju and Nikhil Cheerla are choosing to go back to school and this time, they are the teachers. I can help the community by spending just a little bit of time every week helping just a few students here and there trying to learn programming. Reporter friends since they were young boys they shared a love of computer science. They learned the skills from their parents and in school. But not all kinds have that but not all kids have that opportunity programming isnt really taught at many schools because thats not that many resources to especially in lower income schools to fund it. Does everyone see that . Yes. Reporter so they developed math and coding an Afterschool Program for kids of all ages to learn the basics of Computer Programming. These are the sort of things you dont get in math class or reading class because you have, like, really brokendown problems. Reporter in between applying for college and doing their own homework, these guys now spend a few hours every week going to different libraries teaching classes which cover everything from building basic games to developing apps. Knowing that theres a real need for this these kinds of classes it helps me make time if i dont have it. They are even training volunteers to teach these very same classes in other states and canada. Marianne mitchell brought her 8 yearold granddaughter to the class at the Alum Rock Library in san jose.
