The National Weather service is forecasting this could be the coldest night in San Francisco in more than four years. And its already in the 30s in places around the bay. Chilly indeed. It is in the Single Digits in truckee. Meteorologist drew tuma is here with live doppler 7. Winter has returned to the region. Chilly temperatures this afternoon. And a little bit of wintry precipitation earlier. Live doppler 7, its quiet. We take you back to around 5 00 earlier this evening. We had one shower pop up in the east bay. As it moved through Higher Elevations of the east bay hills, we saw some wintry precipitation in the form of sleet, some snowflakes. That has moved out. The cold air is settling in. 33 fairfield. 36 danville. 39 cloverdale. 45 in oakland and san jose. 46 in San Francisco. There are more than 8 million californians right now that are under some sort of cold weather ale alert, whether freeze warning or frost advisory, stretching as far south as san diego. So this Winter Weather is not just here locally. In fact, with that frost advisory in effect for the immediate bay shoreline, including oakland, san jose, san mateo, away from the coast a freeze warning in effect, a hard freeze warning for solano county. What to expect overnight tonight . Most cities will drop 25 to 35 degrees for lows. Records are likely, so protect the pets, the pipes, and the plants. A man was walking his dog near Palisades Park when he fell hundreds of feet to his death. The chp shared with abc 7 video from inside the helicopter of the crew heading to the scene. Perhaps a desperate attempt to direct potential rescuers to a man who had fallen down a cliff. Hoping he might still be alive. But it was too late. The National ParkService Confirms the 67yearold was trying to get to his dog, which had made its way partway down the cliff. He slipped and fell hundreds of feet to his death. While a california Highway Patrol helicopter lifted firefighters to the mans body from the area, his family members arrived to retrieve the dog. And console one another. Clearly devastated by what had happened. The area is just south of Thornton Beach and west of daly citys Palisades Park, a popular area for dog walkers and families. But also one that can be as dangerous as it is beautiful. Stay on the trails. Yeah. The plants will be slippery with the moisture. So thats why i can see maybe someone falling if theyre on the ice plants when theyre on the edge. Reporter the chp helicopter with a mans body touched down in a parking lot near Thornton Beach and the body transferred to a San Mateo County coroners van. The park Service Warns people not to try to retrieve stranded dogs by themselves. Saying the dog often survives, the person might not. Sky 7 also flew above San Francisco when a man needed to be rescued from the cliffs near lands end. The first call for help came in just after 5 00 this evening. It took less than an hour for firefighters to hoist the man up onto a trail above that cliff. The man was not hurt. Police have found the car belonging to a missing uber and lyft driver, 29yearold joshua last seen driving that car in los angeles on february 11th. The car was found in los angeles east of hollywood. His mother says their familys cell phone plan revealed her son or someone using his phone called 911 on february 12th, but the person who called did not say anything and hung up. Uber and lyft were made aware of the situation and are working with law enforcement. A successful undercover sting targeted laptop thieves in berkeley this weekend. As abc 7 News ReporterMelanie Woodrow explains, officers were deliberately in the right place at the right time. Reporter like most cal students, Madeline Myles is working on her laptop outside cafe strata in berkeley. She says shes left her laptop on more than one occasion to get a drink or food. Its very much Campus Culture to say, will you watch my laptop . Reporter Berkeley Police say a surge in laptop thefts 26 over the last two months prompted officers to take action. We made it a priority. Reporter and its not just people leaving their laptops unattended. Its a quick crime of opportunity. Reporter one that didnt go unnoticed this weekend. Just before 8 00 saturday night, officers working in an undercover capacity here at cafe strata witnessed a group of suspects steal these two laptops and run to a waiting getaway car. One of the two victims chased after the suspects and was dragged a short distance. Reporter after making sure the victim was okay, officers stopped that getaway vehicle on College Avenue near russell street and arrested six people. Three adults and three juveniles. Five of the six were on probation for similar crimes. Police say they also seized additional stolen property from other crimes. Thats good that they are taken seriously that theyre showing up. A former employee of a Southern California assemblywoman accused of Sexual Harassment has filed a complaint with the state. The former staffer says assemblywoman Christina Garcia of bell gardens fired him after he refused to play spin the bottle with her. In his complaint david koenig said garcia was disparaging, used vulgar language, and discussed topics not appropriate for the workplace. The assembly is already investigating a claim she groped a coworker. Mass murder suspect nikolas cruz appears in court. Also, President Trump draws a connection between the shootings and the fbi investigation into russia. There is quick backlash. The Baseball Hall of famer giants legend Orlando Cepeda is being treated by doctors after being rushed to a bay area hospital. The giants spokesperson confirmed to abc 7 cepeda is in the hospital but provided no information about the 80yearolds condition. Cepeda played for the giants from 1958 until 1966. Generations of fans have fondly called cepeda the baby bull. The fairfield resident serves as a good will ambassador for the giants. The giants led an effort to get cepeda elected into baseballs hall of fame in 1999. Today teachers returned to the campus of Marjory StonemanDouglas High School in parkland, florida. Students will have their first full day of school on wednesday, one week after a gunman killed 17 people on campus. Today the suspect, nicholas cruz, made his suspect appearance in court. The judge agreed to a defense motion to keep one document sealed and separately granted an order to release documents from a 2016 state investigation. The records show cruz had cut his arms and posted video of the injuries on snapchat and said he wanted to buy a gun and that he struggled with depression. For the first time today we heard from the family that took in cruz around thanksgiving after his adoptive mother died. Cruz was their sons friend. Everything everybody seems to know, we didnt know. We had rules. He followed every rule to the t. Before he moved into your home, how well did you know him . Had met him a couple of times before. He had spent the night at the w house. He was polite. This past weekend, about a foot of snow fell on the Higher Elevations of many tahoe resorts. This is new video shot at kirkwood this morning. The conditions are just Getting Better with 10 to 15 inches of new snow, with more storms in the forecast. So its been a tough year, but the Mountain Operations Team have been working hard. Construction of an 85milelong section of californias highspeed rail network linking san jose to the Central Valley has been centered on the fresno area. That is about to change. The First Physical work has begun in Silicon Valley and abc 7 News Reporter david louis shows you where. Reporter nearly three years ago, construction started on highspeed rail near fresno. This 4,700foot viaduct will carry trains over the San Joaquin River into fresno. Now ground is being broken for the First Physical work in the bay area. Crews are boring into the ground to extract soil samples for analysis. Understanding the geologic and hydrogeologic composition will help the highspeed Rail Authority to select the alignment for the tracks that will link san joses diridon transit station to the Central Valley. The first Passenger Service to link the two valleys is projected to be in 2025. This is only the first step. Environmental review and Land Acquisition will follow. So it will be one to two years weave a final alignment is determined. The same steps were taken before construction got under way in 2015 in the fresno area. Since then the projects there have created jobs for about 1,700 construction workers. Similar economic stimulus is expected as this bay area work rolls out. Crews in the south bay started this work last month. About 50 fights will be bored in santa clara county. Because the work is adjacent to major roads, some temporary lane closures will result. Here on monterey road, the work is along the shoulder. Other sites are located in landscape median strips. Highspeed rail remains a concept, shown in securityanimated video.
