Steve from Rockefeller Center in the heart of new york city its the tonight show starring jimmy fallon. Tonight join jimmy and his guests Eddie Redmayne guy raz. Musical guest lele pons x guaynaa and featuring the legendary roots crew now, heres your host, jimmy fallon [cheers and applause] jimmy thank you very much. Oh, my goodness hi hey everyone thank you very, very much. And welcome to the tonight show. Lets get to the news and jokes. Well, guys, this morning the commission on president ial debates, which im assuming is just a bunch of guys with bird masks and butt panels, made a big announcement about the next president ial debate listen to this the Commission Just announcing the next debate will be entirely virtual as the president still battles covid. The candidates will participate from separate remote locations jimmy yeah a virtual debate with two guys in their 70s and a moderator in his 60s im sure thatll run real smooth and to make it even more annoying theyre going to have trump and biden chomp on baby carrots while they talk. [ laughter ] [ chomping ] a virtual debate with trump . Come on. How great would that be . Its like, melania, whats the wifi password one, two, three, four. Same as nuke codes. [ laughter ] yeah, a virtual debate seems like a safe idea during a phone call this morning on fox business trump was asked about it and here is what he had to say the cpd the commission on president ial debates announcing this morning that the second president ial debate will be virtual. Are you saying youre not going to participate no, im no the going to waste my time on a virtual debate thats not what debating is all about. You sit behind a computer and do a debate. Its ridiculous. [ laughter ] jimmy trump says he wont waste time and then he went back to chatting on fox business for 55 minutes. [ laughter ] 55 minutes half way through Maria Bartiromo texted the host of fox and friends like, how do make him stop . [ laughter ] seriously, the call was so exhausting maria went online and booked four days at walter reed. [ laughter ] after trump stated he would not waste his time, joe biden announced he was backing out of the debate as well its like a group text once one person bails on brunch the floodgates open and everybody jumps ship theyre like, uh, i got something too, yeah, yeah. Forget about that. Its too bad for the people who were going to speak at the town hall cause they were really looking forward to having their questions ignored on National Television [ laughter ] anyway, back to trumps phone call, maria asked the president how hes doing and it was clear that trump is having a tough time staying in quarantine listen to this first of all i think im better when, to a point where id love to do a rally tonight. I wanted to do one last night. [ light laughter ] jimmy a rally . Hes actually considering that trumps aides were like, you got it, boss, then put him in a room with 5,000 cardboard cutouts. [ laughter ] later in the interview, trump had a sound bite i found very interesting. Check this out and remember this, when you catch it you get better and then youre immune you know as soon as everything goes away for me youre immune. So tell me how you felt what . [ laughter ] jimmy what . Wha [ laughter ] jimmy i never felt better. My body is a finely tuned swiss clock. Everything is in perfect working order. So happy youre better what . Trump suddenly turned into every grandpa when you ask how theyre feeling. What . Also, minor detail, theres no such thing as being immune to covid. After he said that dr. Fauci poured himself a big antibody cocktail minus the antibody. [ laughter ] toward the end of the interview, maria had a question about trumps current covid status and he gave her a pretty interesting answer listen to this youre feeling good have you been tested recently . Can you tell us anything about your condition no, ill be tested very soon but i am essentially very clean. [ laughter ] jimmy essentially. This is kind of a binary situation. You either have covid or you dont. Doctors dont say, good news. You dont have covid any more more or less per se. [ laughter ] its not very comforting you dont see a celebrity coming out of rehab like, all good im essentially clean. [ laughter ] well, guys, last night was of course the big Vice President ial debate between mike pence and Kamala Harris and everyones still talking about it because a fly actually landed on pences head watch this its a great insult to the men and women who serve in law enforcement. [ laughter ] part of a pattern of Donald Trumps he was [ laughter ] jimmy at that point every american was like, os that on him or on my tv . You know Vice President ial debates are boring when a fly shows up and the entire internet loses its mind. Meanwhile, a bunch of other flies off camera were like, oh, my god. I cant believe you actually did it youre a legend, dude [ laughter and applause epic i cant believe you did it Kamala Harris was probably sitting there thinking, ive been strong and commanding and all anyone is going to be talking about is that stupid fly. Yeah, that was a tough moment for pence. Although it is still not as bad as the last Vice President ial debate when a barn owl attacked tim kaine. [ laughter ] yep, pence had a rough night as if the fly wasnt bad enough people also noticed there was something going on with his eyeball. Look at his eye. [ audience oohs hes the head of the Coronavirus Task force not really a great look when youre covered in bugs and bleeding out of your eye [ laughter ] last nights debate was an epic battle between side eye and red eye. Its a tough break for pence its hard to shake the reputation of being robotic when you show up looking like the terminator [ laughter ] also, can you believe Kamala Harris had to stare at that for 90 minutes . As if she wasnt under enough pressure she had to debate the bond villain with the leaky eye [ laughter ] be very careful, mr. Bond. People are worried about pence because pink eye is a possible symptom of coronavirus even scarier, today pences temperature shot all the way up to 84. 6. [ laughter ] well, a lot of people also noticed that pence kept interrupting harris but she wasnt having it watch this this is important and i want to add susan, i have to weigh in her. Mr. Vice president , im speaking i have to weigh in. Im speaking. Raise taxes on anybody who makes less than 400,000 a year you said hes gonna repeal the president s tax cuts mr. Vice president , im speaking well im speaking, if you dont mind letting me finish we can then have a conversation okay please. Okay. In 1864 but id like you to answer the question mr. Vice president , im speaking im speaking okay [ applause ] jimmy compared to the president ial debate, that wasnt too bad although thats like comparing a five star restaurant to a waffle house at 3 00 a. M [ laughter ] thats right there were a lot of memorable moments during the debate and there are plenty of jokes to be made but if its all right i want to take a moment to Say Something serious about democracy. That okay . Tariq you asking me . I mean, its your show, man. Do whatever you want Jimmy America is at an Inflection Point right now [ laughter ] and we as a nation have to come together to make a choice. Tariq jimmy, you got something on your jimmy this country needs to ask itself some hard questions, like what is america who is freedom and when is liberty . [ laughter ] tariq that didnt even make you know what . I dont care, man. Just keep doing your thing [ laughter ] jimmy so get out there and be the change you want to see in the world tariq jimmy. Jimmy yeah, whats up, tariq . Something you want to tell me . Tariq i just wanted to say that was beautiful [ laughter ] jimmy you trim your beard or something you look different tariq no, man. Its a [ bleep ] squirrel on my head [ laughter ] [ applause ]my well, listen tos i saw that the governor of california has a new recommendation for residents to safely eat at restaurants during the pandemic. The Governors Office tweeted out saying when youre eating out at a restaurant to keep your mask on in between bites of food. The tweet even shows an image of someone wearing a mask, then not wearing a mask, taking a a bite, and then putting the mask back on again jimmy so you have to pull your mask down, you take a a bite then you put your mask back on, chew, swallow, then repeat or you could just fill your mask with food and eat like a horse. [ laughter ] even donald trump was like what . [ laughter and applause jimmy what . This is interesting. I saw thatrt cruises to nowhere so theyre basically just going to go out, float, and come back so if youre tired of being cooped up at home try it in a smaller room that rocks back and forth. [ laughter ] normally if someone invites you on a cruise to nowhere youre like okay, cool im about to be murdered. Seriously, im pretty sure cruise to nowhere is the name of every dateline episode. [ laughter ] they had the perfect marriage then they booked two tickets on a cruise to nowhere. [ light laughter ] speaking of traveling, i saw that hotels. Com is offering a stay in a pretty interesting destination. Hotel. Com is offering a a unique escape after casting your early ballot you can enter a contest to live under a rock during the election week its a man made cave built 50 feet below ground [ light laughter ] jimmy the website is great its like oh, we got a king sized bed, we got a jacuzzi, mole people. [ laughter ] and finally, a cafe in prague is getting a lot of attention for its new dessert. Check it out there is a cafe in prague, which is looking to, well, lighten the mood amid a slump in business because of the pandemic owners debuted a dessert cake shaped like the Novel Coronavirus in an effort to draw customers jimmy yeah theyre really into the whole theme. When you order it the server puts it in his mouth and spits it back into yours like a baby bird [ laughter and applause we have a great show give it up for the roots, everybody. Jimmy thank you everybody. Thank you so much. To break these numbers down its time for a segment called leaderboard 2020. Jimmy lets check out the first poll joe biden has a big lead with black women, but trump is leading with white women who only know one black woman. [ laughter ] next up, trump is pulling better with people who spread conspiracy theories on Facebook Biden is leading with people who only use the computer at the library. [ laughter ] next up, biden is leading with health care workers. Trump is leading with people who think taking nyquil and dayquil at the same time cancel each other out [ laughter ] lets take a look at another poll trump is doing better with the 1 biden is leading with people who remember when you could get a gallon of milk for one cent. [ laughter ] next up, this poll found that biden is leading with people under 45 while trump is leading with people who post their google searches as their facebook status. [ laughter ] and finally, biden leads with nonwhite voters but trump leads with white people who have wooden kitchen signs that say dream big, eat bigger in cursive font [ laughter and applause thats all the time we have for leaderboard 2020. Jimmy our first guest is an oscar, golden globe, and tonywinning actor, who you can see in the new film the trial of the chicago 7. It begins streaming on netflix october 16th and is in select theaters right now here he is, Eddie Redmayne eddie oh, look at you. Hey, jimmy how are you . Jimmy last time i saw you by the way, you and your wife just had another baby so now you have two kids now. How old are they now so we have iris is 4, and luke, who is 2 jimmy geez and where have you been for the last few months . Do you know weve been really lucky weve been fortunately everyone has remained healthy. Until i just started shooting again we were in the countryside, which was wonderful. Jimmy oh, beautiful. Because, there was space for the kids to play we basically we sort of became like an Animal Sanctuary while we were there, which was jimmy a lot of people have done this. I have a lot of friends who have done this did you get chickens i mean, we are basically a parody of lockdown we do have chickens. We have five chickens whom my daughter named theyre called belinda, sally henny penny, blanket, flower, and henry. [ light laughter ] and they arrived and they had come from they were sort of battery chickens, so they didnt look that well, but we kind of nurtured them to health and i spent most of lockdown running into other peoples gardens trying to retrieve chickens that were causing havoc. Jimmy thats wild my wife took great satisfaction from it, because she basically on day one kind of just bought me a drill, and gave me a drill, and just kind of said, here learn how to use that. Build me a chicken hutch. And so i built a chicken hutch which is like a triumphant jimmy you built it yourself i did build it. I mean, it was kind of flat packed, so i and i succeeded in kind of the bit where the air was meant to come in i got it a bit wrong, so i ended up having to drill holes around it, but genuinely the amount of pride having built a a chicken hutch gave me was sort of overwhelming jimmy i just have pride, because i own a drill. Ive never used it but i own it i go, i know where it is. I can tell you exactly where it is i think i have to charge it up before i use it, but the fact that i own it, i go, if you ever need me to drill anything honey. Shes like, im good. Ive got it the second you get into drilling its just like the most satisfying thing in the world. Jimmy you want to drill everything i was sort of Walking Around drilling random holes in random walls, just because it gave me some odd pleasure jimmy did the chickens do they lay eggs the chickens you know, they started off not being that keen for laying eggs this he were kind of moulting, and not that happy, and gradually as they kind of fed well, they ended up laying tons of eggs. Which is great except for the fact that i loathe eggs. I kind of hate eggs. So i would sort of have to carry these eggs in in the morning. [ laughter ] not really wanting but doing that thing you do with your children jimmy just take it away. We were adopted by two stray cats during the lockdown as in these two very beautiful black cats just came and started purring at our door, and so again, my daughter named them. One she called catty redman. And the other one had slightly spiky ears, and looked a bit terrifying she called scary catty redman so scary catty redman and catty redman then ended up of course coming into the house and everything, which is all great, except for i am deeply allergic to cats and so this sort of cat allergy, egg Animal Sanctuary thing was wonderful in theory but slightly stressful in reality. Jimmy dad of the year. Ill give you props for that i could not go near i am allergic to cats too are you really. There you go, jimmy. Jimmy yeah we should be roommates [ light laughter ] so you just started a production on the fantastic beasts. Yeah, yes jimmy how is everything going there . Well weve done a day of shooting before covid19 really hit the uk proper. So we started on a friday and then on a sunday night it all we were all told to go home and then just a few weeks ago we started again, and its a a different world, but were so lucky to be back in work and its interesting its kind of like film crews are amazing people and theyre very adaptable people, and so we have theres a lot of testing there is, you know, were in bubbles. Were all masked, but its been kind of to begin with, i thought how is this going to be and this ended up being actually kind of great so its nice to be back at work i feel very lucky. Jimmy you come on my show normally to talk about fantastic beasts, but always its so secretive. Yeah. Very secretive jimmy youre not even allowed to tell me what its about. Very secretive. Jimmy but you showed me a trick or a move before can you tell us something about this one do you know what . Genuinely im not being like sycophantic, but one of the like, joys of promoting the fantastic beasts movie is getting to come and force you to do some ridiculous dance move it did cross my mind i cant tell you anything about the new film, otherwise ill, you know, someone will get furious, but there is a moment which ive been sort of working on and hoping will remain in the film, and which have been trying to find some sort of dinky little thing that i can teach you to add so i cant i couldnt do it now, but im hoping that come november well have another. We can add one more move we should go dancing one night and just beast those fantastic beasts moves out. Jimmy deal i will do that with you. A virtual handshake on that, yeah or elbow bump. I would totally do that with you. I will go dancing with you whenever thats the best. I want to talk about the trial of the chicago 7. Can you stick around, and we can talk about that . I would love that jimmy awesome. More with Eddie Redmayne, everybody. M were at the movies and we need to silence our phone. Who knows where that button is . I dont have silent. If you cant afford your medicine, abbvie may be able to help. Jimmy welcome back, everybody. Im talking to Eddie Redmayne. Eddie, i want to talk to you about the trial of the chicago 7. This is a true story about a a famous trial from 1969 for anyone who doesnt know about this can you set up what this was yeah, so, basically, in 1968 a ton of people descended on chicago or came to chicago to protest the vietnam war, at the Democratic Convention there. And the city had sort of been made into a military state by mayor daly and riots broke out between the protesters and the police and following year, some of the most prominent and kind of infamous figures within the protesters went on trial and they were tried by the government for conspiracy and inciting violence. And it was just it was the most extraordinary trial that transfixed the nation. It was theatrical. It was funny and at the same time it was deadly serious and it was something i didnt know anything about when i was sent the script but i found it i couldnt believe it was a moment in history i hadnt known about. And its yeah, its and it plays to all of Aaron Sorkins genius in it. Jimmy yeah, it is written and directed by aaron sorkin, who i am a huge fan of weve had him on the show. Is this the first time you worked with aaron sorkin it is and he jimmy whats he like on set . Was he did you did you bother him like hey, tell me everything or do you have to talk really fast you know what, its funny you should say that because there was a moment when a wonderful british actor alex sharpe and i were prepping and we were rehearsing together the two of us just a scene and it was kind of working but we werent making it fly. And one of us suddenly i cant remember it was here i said, how about we just walk down this really long corridor incredibly quickly and say the words as quickly as we can . And without i mean, its just sort of like its like this joke but actually the entire scene came together and so in the film there is a moment in which were walking through our part really quickly talking like the amazing thing about doing sorkin is he is just so much brighter than you are and his characters are so much brighter than you are that you get momentarily to have this speed of thought and feel slightly more intelligent than i am which was wonderful. Jimmy i want to show everyone a clip. Here is Eddie Redmayne in the trial of the chicago 7. Take a look. All right my problem is that for the next 50 years when people think of progressive politics theyre going to think of you. Theyre going to think of you and your idiot followers passing out daisies to soldiers and trying to levitate the pentagon theyre not going to think of equality or justice. Theyre not going to think of education or poverty or progress theyre going to think of a bunch of stoned, lost, disrespectful, foul mouthed, lawless losers and so well lose elections. All because of me yeah. Winning elections thats the first thing on your wish list. Quality, justice, education, poverty, and progress, theyre second if you dont win elections it doesnt matter whats second jimmy Eddie Redmayne, everyone the trial of chicago 7 is in select theaters now and begins streaming on netflix october 16th eddie, i thank you so much for coming on the show you know we love you thank you for having me, man. Lovely to see you. Jimmy hug the family well be right back with guy raz, everybody stick around guy raz, everybody stick around i have moderate to severe pnow, theres skyrizi. Before treatment your doctor should check you for infections and tuberculosis. Once the pandemic hit, it was clear our community needed a gathering place, because a a lot of people who listen to the show are entrepreneurs, or they have Small Businesses and people were and still are freaking out and so we wanted to create a a place where we could bring on well known entrepreneurs, from like airbnb and lyft and, you know, and slack, and talk to our audience and basically describe the challenges theyre facing, too. So in a way we wanted to sort of say, look youre not the only one. And heres how other people are building resilience and here are some of the creative ways theyre actually keeping their businesses alive, and its been amazing. Were doing a video podcast twice a week weve done it since early april. Its been so fun we take live questions its been amazing. Jimmy yeah lets talk about your new book it Just Announced that its on the New York Times best sellers list, and hit number one on the wall street journal best selling business books. Congrats, buddy. Thank you jimmy i love it. I dont want it to end im thanking you for autographing it for me, by the way. I appreciate that. Here i have it right here jimmy, hope you like book. Guy. I mean, your handwriting is different than what i thought it would be, but interesting hope you like book well, thats interesting when youre putting this together, did you go back and listen to all the interviews youve done . I mean it seems intense. Yeah, i mean, i interview people for three or four sometimes five hours we only put an hour on the show but really what is amazing, and the insight i really walked away from after really trying to put the book together, was that entrepreneurship is actually a mindset its a way of thinking its a way of operating. Its a series of skills that you can learn. Its solving problems. Its overcoming obstacles. Its dealing with the fear of rejection. And the only difference between the people that i profile in the book and, you know, the rest of us, is that they walked into the phone booth and put on the cape and the idea behind the book, really, is to be the phone booth for people who are ready to put on the cape jimmy yeah anyone can do it its just they didnt have any special skills that you dont have you know, you talk about something in the book called the founders dilemma which i find very interesting. This is when a Company Becomes a success and the founder has to choose between having his company, having control of the company, or selling it for a a lot of money right jimmy you say there is a a third option there is, right it sounds very simple but its happiness. Like heres the thing, jimmy the vast majority, i would say virtually every person whos been on how i built this whether Howard Schultz of starbucks or the founder of class pass, they dont go into starting a business to become rich they go in to solve a problem because a business essentially, thats what it is. Theres a problem and im going to solve it with a product or service. Right . Jimmy yeah so Howard Schultz wanted to solve it by brewing Better Coffee and wanted to solve it by creating a more efficient way to sign up for fitness classes. The reality is many of the founders ive interviewed who have sold their businesses too early have walked away with a lot of money but in many cases it hasnt left them happier because what really motivates them is the camaraderie of a team, is a sense of purpose, is a a mission, right and so thats what gets us out of bed in the morning. Its not having piles of money its having a mission. Having a sense of purpose. Its having a reason to take on the world. And i found that again and again with founders and i think thats really what makes entrepreneurship so special is that the vast majority of people who go into it dont do it for the money jimmy who is the founder of drop box drew houston is a great example. He is going to be on the show in a couple weeks. I mean, he is worth billions of dollars. Jimmy yeah he didnt go into it wanting to, knowing he was ever going to be a billionaire. And to him its just a number on paper but i asked him in my interview recently, you know, what do you think . He is only 37 years old. What do you think about the future do you want to sell and walk away and, you know, kind of just live your life sipping margaritas on the beach . He said, no. Theres no way i would want to do that for the exact reasons i just described because there is a mission, theres a team, there is a reason, there are problems to solve. Thats what motivates him. Thats what gets him excited jimmy i just want to say please keep doing what youre doing because we need it right now more than everybody. Guy raz everybody his book how i built this is available now and when you come back i really want an actual signed copy if you dont mind i promise jimmy guy raz everybody.
