Yeah, it is already feeling warm and it is because of the humidity and that surge of that tropical moisture coming in. You could combine that with hot weather and it going to be oppressive out there today and part of the reason why were seeing the excessive heat warnings for all of the areas shaded in pink from the south bay in san jose over to the trivalley, much of the east bay into the north bay where we see the orange, those are heat advisories where it will still be hot today and we do have to really take it easy. As we get a look at our high temperatures for today, here is what to expect. Highs over 100 degrees and mostly a lot of new records set for today. With it as hot as 109 degrees today in antioch. And oakland reaching 90 degrees. Some 80s for San Francisco. And were also going to see 90s and tripledigits in the north bay. Well get a closer look at this. Well talk about the spare the air alert and well talk about how long this heat continues. It is in the forecast coming up. Now back you to. Well, weve got Team Coverage on the heat wave hitting the bay area. Were going to check in with kris sanchez in a little bit. Shes talking about how outdoor shops and restaurants will cope. But lets start out with Sharon Katsuda live in livermore which is projected to be one of the hottest spots in the bay area. Reporter that is right. Were sort of feeling it already. It is very humid, the moisture in the air, you could feel it and behin me it is about 72 degrees, and you could see by the bright lights, 6 31 and 72 degrees. It was 72 degrees at 5 30 this morning. But it is supposed to be in the tripledigits around afternoon today. And that is why firefighters will be on alert. Fire crews across the bay area are preparing for dry, hot weather and hot weather occasionally lightning storms, lightning could strike in very remote areas and in more than one spot. It could happen to the point where they have three spot fires in the same area where we have to split the crews so maybe you have three firefighters on one spot fire and a few more on the other fire. Whether it is multiple strikes or lightning strikes with precipitation or lightning strikes that are dry with no precipitation, verga, so well review that and make sure that my firefighters have an understanding of what is anticipated. Reporter on top of that, firefightersavto bring extra gear now due to covid19 procedures and any evacuations, vaccies will face a different situation due to the pandemic. The red cross now said temperatures of people will be taken before entering the evacuation centers. And some have had to stay in their cars and parking lots or be sent to hotels. Many fire crews down in Southern California are trying to help out with those fires so theyre monitoring resources as we head into more hot weather here in the bay area. Live in livermore, im Sharon Katsuda, today in the bay. Thanks so much, sharon. There are some fire concerns as well in Southern California. Weve been watching the lake fire near santa clarita, at last check it is also already scorched 11,000 acres. It is only 5 contained. Three homes already destroyed. A hundred structures are still under mandatory evacuation orders this morning. Residents there, theyve had to force to flee during the pandemic but all they could do was put nem this a parking lot and stay in their cars. Our affiliate in los angeles spoke with a homeowner that chose not to leave. It is just ironic how fire could do that. But it is pretty scary when you get flames like that, you know, high and hot. Frightening for people. Firefighters also battling the ranch fire, this is in azusa. Also in l. A. County. That fire is still zero percent contained. Well right now we want to head to san jose. Because weve been talking about how hot it is and how businesses are struggling during the pandemic. Kris sanchez is live at san pedro square in downtown. This heat is going to make it hard for the businesses who have moved business outside. Reporter yeah, that is right. And i mean, a quick question, how often do you see your morning reporters wearing no jacket going sleeveless in the morning. It is 74 degrees and did not cool off overnight and the teams will continue to rise. Right as a lot of people are working outside for the first time. So it is comfortable to take your coffee outside this morning. But by in the afternoon and the evening it is going to be oppressively and dangerously hot. So a challenge for businesses pra operating outside for the first time. Not cranking the oven or stove might get enough customers to hit the businesses but other Services Like gym and personal training that are recently green lighted to operate outside are going to feel a big impact. One salon owner we talked with said the last thing she wants to do is have to call an ambulance. Ive let everybody know im going to attempt to work for a few hours in the morning and see how it goes. I have to cancel all of the afternoon people. And trying to figure out when i could fit them in again. Reporter now, if you are working outside for the first time you should know that cal osha requires that employees be provided with plenty of Drinking Water as well as shaded working cooldown break if youas to let need one and you may need one, especially if you are wearing a mask, which is mandatory in so many counties. As tempting as it might be to have a ice cold beer or a frosty margarita, remember alcohol does not hydrate, so make sure if you imbibe, you still drink this water to stay safe and healthy. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. We see temperatures like this and we tell people to drink plenty of water. Water, water, water. Need that. Happening today, members of Santa Clara County jail plan to participate in a hunger strike. Theyre protesting the death of george floyd and systemic racism. Well here at nbc bay area, were continuing the conversation about race. It is so important. And marcus has been leading the way for us with our special race in america, the conversation. There was another episode last night. There was. A great episode, laura. With a lost great guests but there was one that i thought resonated with a lot of people. Her name is jenny nicholas, the chief impact officer for American Leadership forum in silicon valley. She talked to Jessica Aguirre and what it means to be an allys for the black lives Matter Movement as a white person. I think there is a difference between an ally and a savior. And understand communities of color are powerful, strong, selfdetermining people, individuals an km individuals and communities and theyre not looking for a bunch of white people to come forward and saver them and theyre looking for people to hold their hands and be linked with their arms and say i will put myself on the line with you, i will be here for you. She said a lot of great gems, things to make you think about what is happening and you could do your part in all of this. And of course, it was great, if you missed it, dont worry, we have it for you online at nbcbayarea. Com. Good opportunity to go back and see the episodes and take something home with you. It is 6 38. Taking a live look at big board. New york city, Dow Jones Industrial average down about 86 points so far this morning. Weaker retail and auto sales may be attributing to that as well. A heatup in the midst of a pandemic. What you need to know as we approach this weekend. That is coming up next. Right now at 6 41, were under a microclimate weather alert as we see the remnants of a tropical system brings in clouds and rain off the coast. Combining with very hot weather today. And as we reach into the tripledigits, well take a closer look at what were expecting as we go into the day, that is coming up. Thanks so much, kari. 6 41 now and the headlines from the New York Times this morning. Trump encourages racist Conspiracy Theory about kamala harri harris. Some say it is the same as the birther Conspiracy Theory pushed on barack obama. Scott mcfarland is live in washington, d. C. With more for us this morning. Reporter there is no cleanup this morning from the trump campaign. Theyve used the phrase it is the open question or it is out there when asked about it. Trump referenced it oped in news week magazine questioning senator harriss eligible for the vice presidency based on her parents birthplace. Here is what he said yesterday when speaking to reporters in the White House Press briefing room. So i just heard that i heard it today that she doesnt meet the requirements and by the way the lawyer that wrote that piece is a very highly qualified, very talented lawyer. I have no idea if that is right. I would have assumed the democrats would have checked that out before she gets choese to run for vice president. Theyre saying she doesnt qualify because she wasnt born in in this country. Reporter now this is not an open question. She was born in oakland. The conspiracy theories do ecker the bertherism allegations made in 2011 about president obama. They say this is a distraction issue and it distracts from a terrible week of news in the pandemic and from the bump the biden harris ticket could get from the senators introduction as the running mate. Live in d. C. , back to you. Thanks, scott. Well you heard the president there talking about senator harris. Well bringing in another scott. Scott mcgrew for his analysis. Scott . Reporter well, good morning. I hope with you only address this once but lets address it. The other scott was quite right about saying the president completely misunderstanding what the argument is. Harris was born in oakland. That is not u an intellectual exercise than anything else is someone born in the United States to parents who are not citizens at the time in the United States citizens and the answer is absolutely 100 yes. That is the case. That was decided by the Supreme Court way back in the 1800s. It was a chinese immigrant family in San Francisco that we not american citizens but they have a young boy who traveled to china and came back and wasnt allowed in and the Supreme Court said no, you have to let him back in because he is an american citizen. So this could be laid to rest. Harris is an american citizen and there are requirements that she be nine years to be in the senate and shes clearly in the senate. And so we hope well address this one single time. Other news, President Trump is now saying he opposed more money for the post office because it helps mailin voting. The president said he opposes parts of the stimulus plan because it does have that money for voting. He talked on fox News Business with his most explicit admission yet. Take a listen. They want 25 billion. Billion. For the post office. Now they need that money in order to have the post office work so it could take the millions and millions of ballots. Now in the meantime, they arent getting there. By the way those are just two items. This if he dont get those two items that means you cant have universal mailin voting because theyre not equipped to have it. Reporter President Trump fears making it easier to vote will benefit democrats. Seven states have been doing universal mailin balloting for years an california will join them this year. President trump said mailin voting will delay the results of the election. It is possible, we may not know the winner on the eve of election day and that is okay, unless it is a landslide. There is nothing in american law that said we have to known who election. The nonpolitical leaders of the post office below the post master general wrote an oped assuring the post office could handle it saying given our available Processing Capacity we could easily handle the anticipated increase in election mail due to the covid19 pandemic without impact to ontime performance. What with you ought to be talking about is the deal between israel and the uae, only the third arabic country in history to recognize israel and the first in almost 20 years. The president said he was a big part of that plan and that deal and that he looks forward to further deals. Press secretary yesterday suggesting he israel and the uae. Were watching everything happening in washington. You could talk to me as well. Ill listen to your voice. Find me on twitter scott mcgrew. Thank you. 6 46. Back to the microclimate weather alert for you as that extreme heat moves into the bay area today. And there are real concerns about people heading out to places like beach this is weekend. And forgetting to follow the social distancing rules. Were breaking it down but b how the high temperatures and the pandemic could be a risky combination. You said there were people already out there at the beach . Reporter good morning, marcus. Theyre coming in droves. Folks have their boards, i saw a lady down there reading on the business. It is going to be a busy one. It is chilly now but as temperatures increase folks continue to make their way into the beach and throwing in the fact of the pandemic it could become a dangerous situation so the message this morning as the heat increases, do not let your guard down. Now, so far we have not heard of the local beaches or resorts closing their parking lots or their shores like they did over the july 4th weekend. But local leaders as they have throughout the pandemic are urging folks to mask up and keep their distance. So what about those folks that dont have anywhere to go and are looking to escape the heat . Well cooling stations are beginning to open up to help those in need.
