Today the president s task force set another 400 coronavirus test kits should be available by the end of the week. Joining us, a doctor from the tricity health centers, youre getting hammered with questions. The new news today, Santa Clara County, the hot spot in terms of cases, changing its strategy, saying its now just trying to mitigate the spread. Whats the difference here . Thank you for having me here. Initially we all were saying that we have to contain the virus. As you have heard, even from the general surgeon and the cdc, the condition is now getting it from containment to a Mitigation Strategy. Certain counties like Santa Clara County and Sacramento County are going to Mitigation Strategy. The difference, containment, when there is infection, we want to make sure we contain the infection. Whoever is sick, we want to keep them out so that other people are not getting sick. Mitigation is not exactly the opposite, its actually a combination of containment and reducing risk. As well as treating the patients who are sick. As i mentioned earlier also, a lot of patients recover on their own. In the Mitigation Strategy, its basically if you are sick, stay home. But if you have exposure, there is no need for quarantine, thats what Sacramento County is mentioning at this time, and thats exactly the Santa Clara County also. One of the things were doing is banning large groups of people being together, like 1,000 people. Is that part of that Mitigation Strategy . Exactly. How does that play into it when it comes to schools . Schools being canceled, University Classes being canceled. Is that part of that Mitigation Strategy . Exactly. Thats part of the Mitigation Strategy. Mass gatherings and allowing workers to work from home, telecommuting at this time, as well as if theres any potential exposure, yes, mitigating those. Almost like prevention . Mitigation, prevention, same thing . Exactly. Thats what i want to say, containment and mitigation are not exactly opposites. Mitigation is basically how we can help whoever is sick, how we can help them. As well as also enforcing certain things like if you are sick, wearing a mask, stay at home. If youre not sick, at the same time, were making sure that youre washing your hands and using sanitizer, cleaning the surfaces. Whats your response when people reach out directly, whether on the streets or through social media or calling our newsroom, we are overblowing all of this, the common flu kills more people . How do you respond to that from a medical point of view . Actually youre right, the flu has a high mortality rate. At the same time, because this is new and its spreading and we have more than 100,000 cases across the world, thats why i think people have anxiety of that, which is completely understandable. But we are also recommending our patients to please call the doctor line if they are having any symptoms at this time. And wear the mask to prevent getting other people sick. And they might not have coronavirus, they might not have covid, it could just be common cold. And we dont have immunity to this because weve never been exposed to this before, that is the difference between this and influenza . Thats correct, that is why its spreading fast, and we dont have any vaccine at this time. Understanding coronavirus is posted on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Click and watch online for free.
