Reporter weve been all over the bay area, and weve needed everything from hats, umbrellas, to snow boots. Whacky weather from here to sacramento. This is something we havent seen in a while. Snow on mt. Diablo. Its crazy weather. Because this is my niece, shes visiting from chile. And it was nice a few days ago. Reporter not anymore. The first weeks i have been here is super warm. Now we taking our jackets out. Reporter a storm sweeping through the bay area, jumping about four inches of snow on the mountain. Just before sunset, east of san jose, mt. Hamilton also picture perfect, blanketed with snow. Hail coming down hard in several spots, including gilroy. And in concord. But nothing quite like the Severe Weather sacramento saw, a slushy mess on the road. Drivers getting stuck in inches of hail. Roads so slippery, peep pulling over to avoid a crash. Back here in the bay area, the snow is what got everyones attention, along with the muchneeded rain. This is the weather that we need. We need water. So happy to receive some nice, needed water. Reporter in walnut creek, cheryl hurd. Our chief meteorologist is with us tracking whats happening on that radar and whats to come. We heard from cheryl, with the weather across southern california, a few rain reports, but it turned severe in sacramento where there was not only the hail, but something called groppel that produced two to four inches, basically making it so cars could not drive through downtown. It looks like snow, but again, it is not. We all know about hail, rain that freezes, recirculates through the atmosphere. They had that in sacramento. But the thing that looked like snow in a lot of the video you were seeing was actually groppel, super cooled rain that forms on snowflakes and creates tiny pellets. Hail and groppel. Not snow. Most of the rainfall has moved out. Were going to put a track on this, and ill tell you about a brandnew storm system this week and when it could brings an inch of rain. As you might expect, it is a slow drive. Chains are required on 50 and i80. Check this out. Thats drone video of snow over donner pass in truckee. It was sent to us by kevin watkins. Lets show you some hail. May sent us this picture of her back yard in hayward. And more hail, linda lou took pictures. We want to see your pictures. You can always tag us on twitter. So why arent some schools tracking valuable information that could help save lives. Im v im vick iie nguyen. Firefighters in San Francisco being diagnosed with breast cancer. Hard. But so hav bay area communities. Teenage suicide is an alarming reality impacting hundreds of well, palo alto has been hit hard, and so have many other bay area communities. Teenage suicide is impacting so many local families. Its taboo topic for many people. But should it really be . Some School Districts arent tracking valuable information that could help students from taking their own lives. Lets join Vickie Nguyen with more. Ever since the bay area became the epicenter of a National Study looking at teen suicide, weve wanted to know what can be done to stem the tide of selfharm. It is a matter of leave and death. There is data that schools can use to make a difference. But as our investigation found, many simply dont. A spate of tragic student deaths. Teenage suicide. Vulnerable teens have taken their lives. It can be hard to gauge the scope of an epidemic until its over. But with a streak of teen suicides centered in the silicon to tell her story. We dont go to the Typical School where the jocks bully the nerds. The nerds are the cool kids. She says she hit a low point during the summer after freshman year. My parents are middle eastern. They dont talk about their mental issues. Theres stress as well with their jobs. To them, its like get thickskinned, do better, get back up. But to me, i was so low, i didnt know if i could get back up. You were 14 . Yeah. That was a decision i made at the time to write that letter and try to end my life. Now a year after her attempted suicide, gianna says shes found new purpose to prevent other teens from making a decision they cant undo. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for kids 1019 after accidents. Education is such an important thing in the bay area, yet people arent educated about Mental Health. Part of the education that may be missing is data on 5150 holds on school campuses. If a student is at risk of harming himself or others they can place that student on a 72hour involuntary hold in a Mental Health facility. Are todays teens more at risk for taking their lives . Absolutely. David weber is the lead psychologist at Clovis Unified School district. They had 142 students placed on a 5150 hold last year. Do you think all students should be tracked . They should. Only its of the schools know how many times their students have been placed on a psychiatric hold. Across those districts, it happened 455 times, just last year. Los angeles, San Francisco, and san jose are among the many districts that dont track this information. Some people say talking about suicide encourages it. Do you agree . Absolutely not. Thats one of the greatest myths around suicide. What we know is that, you know, if somebody is talking or thinking or having feelings of suicide and we end up asking them that question, it typically is, gives them a sense of relief. And it gives them permission to talk about it. Palo alto Unified School District has struggled through two different suicide clusters since 2009. At least nine students took their lives and the citys suicide rate is nearly three times the state average, fwbut,n this atrisk community, the district does not track how many students have been placed on 5150 hold. For months weve asked to speak with the superintendent or anyone from the school board about why palo alto seems to be in the dark about its 5150 data. At first they said one would explain it to us, then they stopped rur stopped returning our emails and phone calls. Reasked t we asked the district why it doesnt track 5150 data. And they said they would start this fall. What did you hope to learn by tracking this data . We hope to have some information about the frequency. You dont think districts should avoid talking about this issue . I dont think sao. I thi so. I want schools to start investing more in students happiness. Meanwhile, gianna joined a group called bring change to mind. They want to talk about Mental Health without judgment. You arent the only one feeling these things. How would you describe where you are today . I guess you could say growing. I feel like im in a lot better place. We have more information if you or someone you know needs help. Theres a hotline number on your screen to call. We are seeing a shift in the way some educators feel about tackling this issue. They say more dialog means lessa stigma and morell ways for peop to get help. Thank you, vicky. If you have a story for our vetiti investigative unit, visit other website.
