We have abc seven News Team Coverage for you as the cleanup in tahoe continues. Abc seven News Reporter suzanne fawn spoke to people who live and work in the sierra about the impact of the blizzard. Were going to get to that. But first, lets begin with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. For a look at the really severe, impressive snowfall numbers. Absolutely. For one storm. Dan, were talking about 10. 5ft of snow for one of the resorts. Ill show you that in just a moment. Look at this view. I mean, we depend on the Sierra Snowpack for 30 of our water supply, and we are definitely seeing a big difference up there. So let me show you the snow totals. Sugar bowl 126in. That is just staggering. Were talking about 116 uh soda springs got up to a dodge ridge, 89in of snow. Now it is still snowing. Blue canyon reporting snow in 29 degrees. Truckee light snow as you look at live doppler seven, but nothing like the blizzard conditions. So the statewide snowpack is up. It is at 104 of average statewide. Everybody going up, which is a good sign. We did have a few showers today. They werent widespread very spotty in nature. And tonight we are still dealing with isolated showers, mainly in the north bay. The system off the coast there is heading in our direction, but it is going to make a beeline towards southern california. Ill be back to show you a timeline of when, when and who might see those showers coming up. Dan okay, sandhya, thanks very much. Well continue our Team Coverage now with abc seven News Reporter suzanne fawn, who talked with travelers about just how challenging things have been. Suzannes in the newsroom. So dan, the chp and caltrans for days warn drivers to delay travel because of whiteout conditions over the weekend. Today backups and closures have been cleared and now people are looking back at how wild that storm really was. Heavy snow and high winds slammed the sierra this past weekend, creating chaos on the roads. The chp had to rescue some drivers on i80 near Donner Summit because of whiteout conditions and on other highways around lake tahoe, more stranded motorists. Ive never seen that many cars stuck on the side of the road, so we lended a hand, pushed a few, helped to shovel. After i80 was shut down for days. Today, some relief for drivers and residents. Im in a truck with four wheel drive. Former abc seven News Reporter Laura Anthony finally able to make her way home to the reno area. I honestly dont see a lot of just passenger cars with chains. I saw many, many dozens of big rigs lined up along interstate 80 below the chain controls, i guess waiting to go through caltrans has done an amazing job of clearing this freeway. I thought it was going to be a lot worse. Also today snow blowers hard at work. Wendy fields of napa is staying in tahoe city where they have 15 foot snowdrifts outside her condo. Fields came up to ski and wonders when shell be able to get back. I have a tesla and the Tesla Chargers have not been dug out. Theres a huge wall behind me at palisades tahoe ski resort. So much snow fell in such a short period of time and absolute insane blizzard. Snowstorm. The winds at our top ridge hit 190mph. The ski resort opened up today, but check out this post on x. Its clear the run right now. Hurricane force winds blew out some windows and filled the area with snow. Crews had to clear out the snow before they could start spinning. The chair. Across the region. Crews and equipment have been working overtime. Reportedly, equipment has been breaking down. I know multiple snow plow companies that work in the roads, in the areas. Some of their machineries have broken down, um, its just what happens when theres this much snow. Usually we can handle the six inch storms pretty easily. Its nothing really to bat an eyelash about, but eight feet. I dont i dont know if people really understand how much snow that truly is. And according to caltrans, most of their snow blowers are broken. Caltrans posted on zillow earlier that only eight of their 30 snow blowers were working. The good news, though, again, interstate 80 is now open to all traffic in both directions. Live in the newsroom. Suzanne fan abc seven news. Such improvement suzanne. Thank you. Hey, take a look at this stunning rainbow. Look the entire thing right. You dont often see that our own dan noyes capture. Thats perfect. Arch this morning spans from alcatraz into San Francisco. Well, you may have noticed some smoke along the peninsula today. Today in the portola valley. Thats because stanford researchers utilize the wet environment by burning piles of debris for wildlife management. Abc seven news south bay reporter Dustin Dorsey has the story. Letting it burn. With the rainy season winding down, the fire, season is coming up fast and Stanford University researchers say theres a clear way to prevent them. Low intensity fires like these reduce wildfire risk by 60. Fuel reduction wildfire management Risk Mitigation is a Community Level effort. We have to work together. If one person is doing something over here and one person is doing something over here, if its not connected and a firework to come through, that would be at risk. But if we all work together, thats when youre going to get the best Risk Mitigation. The team from stanfords Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is doing their part with these pile burns. Unlike more common prescribed fires, this style of fuel reduction is smaller and easier to control. It creates a safety barrier for nearby homes and the preserve. When were burning fuel and were actually removing the fuel out of the system instead of just rearranging it when you cut things and just kind of put it on the ground, which is an Excellent Way to do things like when you chip material, but when youre burning it, if a fire were to come through, theres nothing left to burn. Theres educational benefits from this burn. As well. Stanford students and researchers can use this to study low, medium and high intensity fires. To learn more about the impact on the environment, a flame filled first hand experience. When were looking at the range of different outcomes of the fire, we can have some control and then translate that into what real wildfires happen or other types of burning. Jasper ridge specializes in research, education and conservation. Executive director jorge ramos says these burns bring all three of those elements together like never before. This is the first of many of our Bigger Mission and our bigger vision that we have here at the preserve. Were starting with, like an Ecology Foundation of studying whats happening to the system, but also this will open up opportunities for research, education and stewardship in the hopes to bring wildfire management to a whole new level here in california, in the portola valley. Dustin dorsey, abc seven news. All right, well, weve been talking about a lot of rain lately. We have indeed. And abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is back with what we can expect as we go forward here. Sandhya. Yeah. Not a storm that is going to be a repeat of what we just saw over the last couple of days. Dan and let me show you a live picture right now from zephyr cove, where things are a lot quieter than the blizzard of the weekend. Up to 10. 5ft of snow for one of the resorts up there. Sugar bowl, palisades tahoe, by the way. Friday, late at night above 8000ft, reported a wind gust close to 200 miles an hour. As we take a look at live doppler seven right now, you will notice that there is still some snow falling across the Northern California mountains and the northern sierra, along with the central sierra, but the winter storm warning was dropped earlier today. This is the system that is going to bring us some showers and they will get some more snow showers, but its below that warning criteria. So as we look at live doppler seven right now, we do have a few sprinkles around taking you back in time. We did have those showers come through here. They were very isolated earlier today and they will remain isolated through tonight. A live view from our east bay hills camera a lot of cloud cover out there. Temperatures probably noticed this feeling like winter. Mid to upper 50s. San francisco 55 56in oakland, san jose. Youre at 59 degrees. Half moon bay. You need the jackets 54 degrees. Beautiful view from our san jose camera as we look at the shark tank here. Low 50s, santa rosa, petaluma 54, in napa, 56. Concord and livermore. And a lovely view from our Golden Gate Bridge camera. Tomorrow were looking at isolated showers. Thursday and friday, scattered showers. Excuse me. That should say wednesday. Scattered showers. And then thursday and friday. Sunny and milder weather is expected. All right. Were going to straighten this all out. So tonight those isolated showers remaining in the north bay as we head into tomorrow, a few showers show up, but theyre not widespread, which is why were not giving it a storm impact scale. Just a spotty showers in the north bay. Maybe an isolated shower in the east bay after that on wednesday is when were expecting some of those showers to come in our direction. So not is not going to be a widespread event. But you will notice around the santa cruz mountains, San Francisco, east bay, parts of the north bay, there very scattered, continuing through wednesday evening. And this will mean some more snow showers in the sierra. The system winds down pretty quickly, but unlike the last system that brought, you know, 3 to 5in for our wettest, higher terrain, this system is going to bring anywhere from nothing measurable in places that dont get the wet weather to about a third of an inch in ukiah, clear lake could pick up a little bit more than that. Now. Well fine tune those numbers as we get closer. Our temperatures first thing in the morning, 40s and 50. If i were you, i would just grab the umbrella before i leave home. Just in case you need to use it tomorrow afternoon. Youre looking at highs in the 50s and 60s, mostly cloudy, except up to the north. A few showers now. We are expected more showers for your wednesday, which is why that storm impact scale is on there. The accuweather seven day forecast. If youre going to the polls tomorrow, no need to worry. Isolated showers level one for wednesday. We get that break thursday. Friday lots of sun, milder weather and then saturday our best chance of wet weather is going to be in the north bay right now. Dont forget sunday we spring forward. We are actually losing that hour of sleep. But it is oscar sunday and its going to be mostly cloudy. Rain is back on monday, a level one that is going to be a widespread rain event. So dan and emma, we are in for a little bit of a treat later on this week. We are . Yeah thanks, andy.
