Reggie, the situation is getting so bad that there is a court order that all staff at california state prisons must be tested by next monday. Staff at san quentin must be tested by this thursday. Now, a federal court order sites staff as the main vector for spreading the virus in state prisons. A woman who wanted to only be identified as danny spoke to us by phone about her 29yearold son who is an inmate at san quentin and tested positive for covid19. He called her last week. Taking their temperature, they were only doing it every three days. Its like they dont care. Theyre not giving them clean supplies and theyre not letting them take showers. Hes using his bar soap to wash his walls. San quentin started setting up air conditioned tents on prison grounds for medical triage and extra housing space. They ex. They stopped the forward progress of this fire at about nine acres. A live look at the scene this morning. Cal fire says two fire engines are going to stay there to make sure the fire is fully contained. Easy to see why the governor is talking about rolling back reopening when we look at the numbers. On monday the state of california brok a new record. More than 8,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases. Again, thats why he was discussing potentially rolling back parts of reopening yesterday. Newsom reported a 45 increase in coronavirus cases in just the last seven days, which is forcing some counties to lower the dimmer switches the governor said on reopening. Bars that do not sell food are now closing again in seven counties. The governor said hes looking for compliance but enforcement by the state will be critical moving forward. Let me be forthright with you. We are considering a number of other things to advance and we will be making those public as conditions change and we will make public we believe the appropriate time. On the enforcement front, newsom mentioned the more than 2 billion of this newly signed budget meant for Coronavirus Relief for counties that is tied to their compliance. Now, ahead of the fourth of july holiday weekend, the governor also reminded people to stay vigilant, try to stay away from any Mass Gatherings and wear a mask if youre out and about because he said if there is another spike in coronavirus cases, we could see a return of more restrictive measures in many of our counties across the state and, of course, even here in the bay area. Reporting live, im Julian Glover, abc7 news. We are seeing some of the restrictions already. Bay area counties hitting the brakes amidst the alarming spikes in covid19 infections. Well start with contra costa which posted the highest number since the pandemic began yesterday. Hospitalizations jumped 75 in the last two weeks. The county was supposed to reopen indoor restaurant dining, gyms, museums and hotels tomorrow. Those plans are on hold. Alameda county also putting a pause on reopening. There have been 700 more cases and 13 additional deaths in the last week. The county was set to allow salons, barbershops, pools, indoor restaurant dining to take place in its next phase. In the south bay, some salon owners and stylists are demanding to know when Santa Clara County is going to allow them to reopen. The county has been slower to reopen sectors of society compared to some of the rest of the bay area. Employees from salons gathered outside the Public Health department to express their frustration. They say their businesses are safer than many that are already back open. We are self employed and independent contractors. We work on what we built for ourselves and when that gets completely taken away, we were just left with absolutely nuthing and no guidance. County Health Officer dr. Sarah cody says hes plshes pl to give more counties the green light for opening in the next several days. Here at the live desk, im tracking the race to find the covid19 vaccine. The top leading expert on coronavirus dr. Anthony fauci will schedule for a vaccine that is 70 to 75 effective. Matt willis expects the san quentin outbreak to reach 2,000 cases in the next ten days. A new court order says prison staff was identified as the main vector for spreading covid19 in state prisons. And since staff here live and shop in marin, the question is how do you stop staff from bringing it home to their community and families. Making sure the proper ppe is used by staff and the physical distancing is optimized. And the staff live and shop in marin and now we have 100 infected staff.
