But the real problems weret Oakland International airport. Hundreds of people had to return to pick up their bags this morning after the power outage. This was a huge mess and we got some answers. Add to that trying to find your bags today after they arrived without you the night before. Came down here and had to wait 30 minutes before we were told wed have to come back this morning to pick up our bags. A major power outage crippled Oakland International for several hours last night. Power was restored by 10 00 p. M. Planes remained on the tarmac. Baggage claim area was in the dark, so was security. A spokesperson said there was never danger of anyone getting past security because screenings were halted. The power failure even triggered the fire alarm visible there in red. 1400 passengers had to be rebooked. Danielle matthews on her way home to oakland was left stranded in phoenix. No hotel. No food vouchers, nothing. Sleeping in the airport with hundreds of other angry people. Maria lopez was promised by the airline they would deliver her bags to her home in cloverdale. Those concerns are definitely growing after that pedestrian was struck and killed in san jose. City officials are doing everything they can to address the issue but say it is an uphill battle. In the bay areas largest city, another trafficrelated fatality has left this normally quiet neighborhood in disbelief. Probably still be alive. Just before 4 30 this morning, police found a man lying facedown near a curve near rue bino drive and fox worthy avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene. I know we take for granted every day what we have. Not everyone thinks theyll get hit by a car. The victim not identified was the 53rd person to die in a vehicle collision in san jose this year. What makes it more troubling, he was the 7th pedestrian to be hit and killed this month alone. We know we have to do much more and we need to do better to keep our residents safe and thats both with Police Officers getting out in Traffic Enforcement units and changing the configuration of road designs. Whenever theres an accident, the department of transportation sends someone out to see what can be done to make it better. Were putting pedestrian imrovements all over the city to alert motorists. Youll see more of the beacons that flash for a pedestrian to cross. But urban planning experts say theres more pressure on our infrastructure than ever before. To understand the Christmas Tree shortage, we talked with tommy spear. Its real . Its real. Man, it is severe. So severe that yes, Christmas Tree lots could run out of trees early. Weve already seen a lot of crust mecustomers, do you have tree . Weve never seen this mny customers calling this early looking for a tree. This tree shortage began in oregon six years ago, the largest exporter of Christmas Trees. The number one reason was in years prior, there were too many trees. A grower stopped growing because they werent making that money. Instead, many decided to grow marijuana or hemp. On top of that, recession forced growers to closed and two recent hot summers. It wiped out a large amount of seedlings. They take years to grow. Now theres not enough. It keeps getting worse. To give you an idea, my grower, my main grower that i use, theyre cutting this year 50 less trees than last that shortage combined with the rising cost of labor led to a high spike in prices. The cost on a wholesale level has doubled. Is it going to get better . Spear believes not any time year. Last year was the worst. I said yes, i will support whatever you want to do. But can you give us a little bit of time . You said yes. The new norm, rehab, physical therapy, months of small improvements, glimmers of hope. First a toe, then a leg. Even his hands. Then the progress plateaued. You ask yourself. Is that all there is . Is this all the further im going to go . Is this it . Were at the San FranciscoInternational Airport to visit the wag brigade, which is a group of therapy dogs and a pig who are here to make your trip more enjoyable. Lets check out our new fourlegged friends. Wag brigade is the airport animal assisted program. Its a partnership between the airport and the spca to bring trained and certified animals to make passenger travel more enjoyab enjoyable. Its great. I mean, the dogs absolutely love it. Really rewarding to see all the people that respond very positively to seeing the dogs. The wag brigade is sfo and the spca as well as all of the volunteers who volunteer their time to come to the airport and participate in the wag brigade. At the present time, we have 22 dogs and a pig on the wag brigade. Today we have the pig, we have jagger the wagger, we have bombay. We have benga and wrigley. When we first launched the program, our main goal was to destress our passengers. However, what we quickly found is that we have a way to connect with our passengers more on an emotional level. We have found that were creating a sense of community. The idea for therapy animals got started the day after 9 11 when an employee at mineta san jose brought his therapy dog into work and he was able to see how his dog was able to relieve jitters and anxiety. This is benga, hes a shihtzu mix, mixed with pekinese and poodle. Shes been doing therapy work for five years and been at sfo for about three. The amount of people who cry over the dogs, pretty incredible. A lot of passengers are missing their own animals when theyre traveling, it provides them comfort. Parents like to have their kids play with the dogs a little bit. It gives them a little break. Traveling is stressful. This is a 5yearold pig. Julianna. Its super positive. We find that not everyone is traveling for positive reasons. We come into contact with a lot of people who are traveling to funerals. They might be leaving home for the first time. So to see a dog at an airport is super fun. Passengers can pet the animals, passengers can hug the animals, passengers can take selfies with the animals.
