Terrifying moments off the coast of Monterey County. A diver attacked by whats believed to be a great white shark yesterday in Stillwater Cove off pebble beach. The diver may owe his life to two First Responders who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Abc 7s Cheryl Jennings has the story. Reporter the diver was spear fishing with his father 80 yards off pebble beach when the shark bit his leg. He swam to the surface to tell his dad what he had seen when when he was at the surface, the shark actually attacked him. Reporter officials believed it was a great white based on the bite marks. The diver managed to get his boat back to shore. You see a boat in the water, the subject to the side of her, yelling about some type of shark bite. Saw this red zodiac boat come in, acting not right. Reporter at the same time, two offduty Monterey County sheriffs deputies happened to be fishing up a day of fishing at Stillwater Cove. Deputies alerted them. One deputy applied a tourniquet. The wet suit was inside the z zodiac. It was pretty shredded, there was a lot of boat. Reporter cal fire coordinated with deputies to evacuate the cove. A cal fire jet ski helped a swimmer back to the pier. Warning signs have been posted. Cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. The 25yearold victim is undergoing treatment at a salinas hospital. There have been seven known shark attacks in the area since 1966. Only one was fatal. That was an attack on a surfer in 1981 off spanish bay. Abc 7 news has learned the San Francisco police union has filed papers with the department of elections saying it will circle a petition for a june referendum. That referendum will determine a policy for the use of tasers. Abc 7 News Reporter vic lee has the story youll see only on abc 7 news. We will let the citizens and the voters of this city decide this issue once and for all. Reporter Police Union President Marty Halloran says tasers have been debated by the Police Commission for eight long years. The fact that they final voted for tasers last month, halloran said, is not enough. What they voted on is the idea of officers carrying tasers. They did not vote on a policy. Reporter thats why on tuesday they filed notice with the official of elections that they will circulate petitions for a referendum on tasers for next junes elections. This proposed ordinance lists a policy that the poa believes will protect the officers and the public. Halloran says its not much different from a draft policy that the commission worked on in may. The policy that the commission put forward in may, thats almost the identical language that whether going to put forward to the voters. Reporter the Commission Hopes to have tasers in the hands of officers by december 2018 at the earliest. First, they would have to adopt a policy. Commission president Julius Turman says that means hearing from all stakeholders including opponents. We need some time to look at all of those policies and come together on what the best policy would be. Im afraid also that that policy will be tweaked to a point where its no longer practical. This is roo, hes been staying with the smith family in vacaville for a while. He was seriously hurt after a fight with another rooster. Roo suffered swelling to his brain. Unable to function on his own, his owner found a chicken therapy chair sold in australia and knew she had to get it to help roo recuperate. This holiday weekend, the parking lots on each end of the Golden Gate Bridge are shut down to traffic. Were looking at 60s in concord, 50s in livermore. A live look outside. Another Beautiful Day on the way with a mix of clouds and sun. But we are going to look at the breezy winds beginning to move in. Theyre already in the upper elevations. You may feel those if youre out for a hike.
