The Fairfield Police Department says it has seen an increase in overdoses recently involving Fentanyl and Heroin-laced Fentanyl. Police say they have responded to three overdoses in the last three days, and officers have rendered life-saving aid to 12 people in the past three months. Police say anyone who sees drug paraphernalia, or similar out-of-place items, should not handle or touch them in any way, but should instead contact the Fairfield Police Department. Fairfield will hold Memorial Day services at the Maple Hill Veterans Cemetery at 11 Monday morning. Mayor Mike Dreith will be the speaker, with Dave Land serving as Master of Ceremonies and Lebanon North CP Church Pastor J.C. McDuffee offering prayer. American Legion Post 176 Commander Tom Seaman and VFW Post 4535 Commander Ron Van Buskirk will lay a wreath at the monument of the unknown service person. The Honor Guard will perform a 21-Gun Salute, followed by the sounding of Taps by Doug Aman. In the event of rain, the service will be held in the sanctuary of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on West Delaware in Fairfield. We will broadcast the service on 104.9 WFIW, and we'll also have video coverage on wfiwradio.com The Edwards County Memorial Post 8222 Avenue of Flags will be on the Edwards County Courthouse lawn from today until 3 p.m. on Monday, weather permitting. 398 flags will be on display. Post 8222 and the American Legion Color Guard and Firing Squad will meet at the VFW Post at 6 a.m. Monday before visiting area cemeteries. Salutes are planned at 7 at Birk Cemetery, 7:15 at Mt. Zion, 7:30 at Wanboro, 7:45 at Little Prarie, 8 at Samaria Baptist, 8:15 at Pleasant Hills, 8:30 at West Village, 9 at Browns, 9:15 at Union, 9:30 at Graceland, and 9:45 at Old Albion. They will then hold a program at the Memorial Arch on the courthouse lawn at 10 a.m., everyone is invited to attend. The West Salem American Legion McCormack Post #658 will conduct their annual memorial services this Sunday. The post will hold service at 8 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on the square in West Salem, and then visit nine cemeteries: Shiloh at 8:30, Ebenezer at 8:40, Macedonia at 9, Little Wabash at 9:15, Marion at 9:30, Parkersburg Oak Hill at 10, Walnut Grove at 10:15, Zion United Methodist at 11, and the Moravian at 11:15. Times are approximate, and some of the schedule has changed from previous years. In addition to the ceremonies, the West Salem Development Association will provide breakfast for all local veterans and their spouses, as well as the widows of veterans, at the Community Center beginning at 7 a.m. Menu will consist of biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls, orange juice, and coffee. Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City will host its 46th annual Memorial Day Services on Monday at 2 p.m. Sharon White will deliver the welcome, and Gary Cline will give the opening prayer. Wayne City Boy Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and Jennifer Cline will sing the national anthem. Chris Draper will then read the veterans buried in the cemetery in the past year. This year's speaker will be Lamar Choate. The closing ceremony will be led by American Legion Post 176 and VFW Post 4535, and will include the placement of a Memorial Wreath at the Veterans' Monument, with the Color Guard Firing Squad performing a 21-Gun salute followed by Taps. The public is invited to attend the service, and those who do should bring a lawn chair. The City of Fairfield says its trash contractor will run its normal route next week. Sunrise Sanitation will have no delay in trash service because of Memorial Day, so people should have trash out for pickup on the regular pickup day. Samantha Mosbarger will sing the National Anthem and the 21-gun salute will be fired by American Legion Posts #14 and #914 and VFW Post #3999. Please bring your lawn chairs. In eastern Clay County, four ceremonies are planned for today by members of Clay City American Legions Post 840 and Sailor Springs Post 230. The first observance is at 1:00 pm at the Clay City Cemetery. At 1:30 pm is the ceremony at Mt. Zion Cemetery, then at 2:00 they shift to Dillman Cemetery at Sailor Springs and at 3:00 they conclude with a final service at Smith Cemetery. After the services, the Sailor Spring Post serves a chicken dinner with mashed potatoes, a roll and dessert courtesy of the Pit Stop Café in Clay City. In northern Wayne County, A Memorial Day service is planned at Willow Branch Cemetery near Rinard today at 1:00 pm. The speaker is Gene McAllister from the Bloom Baptist Church. American Legion Post #14 and VFW Post #3999 will present the Color Guard and fire the 21-gun salute. Please bring lawn chairs for your comfort. In Flora, an observance is planned on Monday morning with the parade. Those attending the service at Elmwood Cemetery are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Participating units will assemble at Flora's Historic Railroad Depot at 10:00 am. The parade then steps off at 10:10 with Debbie Pace serving as Parade Marshall and travels south on State Street. Once arriving at Elmwood Cemetery at about 10:20, Steve Welty serves as Master of Ceremonies, with Ed McCormick hoisting the American Flag. Tammy Renee Harris performs the Star-Spangled Banner. The invocation is offered by Pastor Jesse McCammon of Calvary Baptist Church. Other events include the posting of and memorial wreath by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Presidents. There's special music performed by Tammy Renee Harris and Steve Welty serves as speaker and attending veterans will be offered an opportunity to make remarks too. That will be followed by the honoring of fallen comrades by the Legion and VFW Firing Squad with a 21-Gun Salute and the playing of Taps and then bagpipes by Steve Pace. The ceremony concludes with the Benediction offered by Pastor McCammon. A 54-year-old rural Odin man has been charged with arson to a place of worship in connection with a fire that heavily damaged the Bethel Baptist Church at 1300 Bethel Road in rural Odin on July 5th or 6th, 2018. Joseph Busscher who lives next to the church had the charge filed against him on Friday. He is already being held in the Marion County Jail on another incident involving the church. Busscher is currently set for a June 21st jury trial on the firearm and criminal damage charges. Busscher was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and criminal damage to property between $500 and $10,000 for allegedly firing gunshots at the church. River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 15.93 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 6.63 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 16.18 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 4.22 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 10.13 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 7.09 feet.
