>> it will happen. i mean, this is how legislation always happens. they are not asking for a clean ukraine funding bill. they are attaching it to aid to israel and republicans are attaching border security and something is going to come out of it. republicans are actually doing both ukraine and the biden administration a favor by doing. this what is the most devastating argument that the anti-ukraine right has unleashed against aid to ukraine. they say biden cares more about securing ukraine's borders than our own. the reason that argument is devastating because it's true. he has unleashed the worst border crisis in american history that border crisis is endangering americans. it's allowing deadly fentanyl to come into our country. it is possibly letting in terrorists and cartel members. and so we are a super power. we can do both. we can secure our border and help the ukrainians defend theirs. but we're not. and so if the republicans can use ukraine to get border security it's a win for americans and win for ukraine because it disarms the anti-ukraine right of the strongest argument against helping ukraine. >> bret: you know, on immigration, leslie, it is becoming untenable along the border you have jeh johnson obama administration the sound bite making the rounds how he is was characterizing what the numbers looked like and when he thought it was a crisis. take a listen. >> it was under 1,000 apprehension's the day before. that was a relatively good number. and if it was above 1,000, it was a relatively bad number and i was going to be in a bad mood the whole day. i know the thousand overwhemsz the system. i cannot begin to imagine what 4,000 looks like. we are truly in a crisis. >> bret: truly in a crisis and you look at the record setting days recently. you have got 12,000 on december 5th. 10,200 migrant am prehelpings, 22,000 migrants in custody. broader in the presidential term. if you look under president trump, all of the migrant encounters for the entire trump presidency, 2 million more than 400,000 now. this is just through october 2023, 6,533,000. the numbers are staggering, leslie. >> the numbers are staggering. but let's keep in mind it's not any of the president of the united states democrat or republican who has the power with this multi facile setted problem in our immigration system to put other than a little band-aid on it and that's congress. democrats and republicans, republicans are in power now. and what republicans are doing -- marc and i disagree mostly. i will agree the first thing he said this is how legislation is done. but it is really sad that this is what republicans are doing talking about giving russia time and upper hand. some could argue israel and hamas argued with the cease-fire. i really find it unconscionable they be attaching this foreign policy and immigration are two different issues. i don't care hot president is or what party they are part of and quite frankly, what republicans are doing, let's be very clear, it's an election year their losing more and more people in the house. immigration winning policy for republicans. something that concerns voters on both sides of the aisle. that's why they're attaching. this this just wrong. this is issues that need to be addressed but separately. i agree with steny hoyer's comments. >> bret: okay, but i will say leslie, and ien will point to byron this was attached to the supplemental by the president. the border security is a part of the settlement mental it just was weak in the eyes of republicans think believe if you are going to sign to all of this aid a big number for ukraine which they have a problem with in their caucus, then they are going to get something for and it toughen up the border security measures in this bill. >> indeed, the white house are the ones who included the border measure in this big supplemental request for israel, ukraine, taiwan and the border. a lot of the money that the white house wanted was to accommodate and expedite and process the millions of illustrate legal border crossers being allowed to stay in the united states. i think everybody agrees this is a bad way for congress to do work. one, the border is this incredible crisis. bill melugin's twitter feed is just terrifying. is he doing great reporting on the border. and you are seeing how many people are coming over. and then the question of ukraine deserves a real debate.
