joe biden went there last time, i am sure he is going to come back for this election. now, how did you get there? i'm not saying you don't deserve to get there, because i think you do, you are an honest person. but, what is your assessment of how you got to this place, where you are the voice? >> it is not more and i am not the voice. black people are not monolithic. i say things people disagree with, i say things people disagree with. but, whether people like it or dislike it, i think it is sincere. you know, with these elected officials, with these artists, all they care about is the audience. right? >> well, why don't you just say it? >> i watch the show a couple weeks ago, i saw kindberg up here, kindberg said he doesn't support trump or biden and he is not voting. you didn't give no pushback on that, none. >> who said this? >> am i saying his right -- name right? white guy, republican? >> wow. i don't remember that dude, but i push back on that all the time. >> i remember it vividly. he said, i don't support either of them and i am not voting. >> my bad. so, i want to ask you about morehouse. this is the speech biden made at his graduation, the commencement address that presidents gives at morehouse. i guess it is not all black anymore, right, because i think that is against the law, but it was founded as an all-black -- >> an hbcu. >> right. so, what did you think of biden's methods -- message? it was very controversial. how would you summarize his message and what are your feelings on it? >> i don't think that is the time for him to be political. he should have been inspirational. it felt like a lot of doom and gloom. >> it was. >> it felt like, you should vote for me because if not, the sky is falling. and i didn't feel like that was the place for him to do it. i don't even think he should have given a commencement speech. what had -- he should be doing is holding town halls that places like morehouse college. instead of trying to talk to people, he should be trying to talk with them. >> so -- >> [ applause ] >> one of the more controversial things he said as he said to the graduating class that you have to be 10 times as good to get a fair shot in america. can i read what -- if you listen to the podcast, i think they are great on this. lauri said, i think it is the speech you would have given in 1974, 1984, but not 2024. the border, for goodness sake, can we please admit that time passes. i remember my mother saying that in the '70s when it made sense, but it is simply not true anymore and we should liberate that. do you agree with that? >> no, two mvps. >> i don't follow women's basketball. i don't apologize, i don't follow college, i don't follow watch of sports. i just followed the big three at playoff time. >> gotcha. >> but, she said, a lot of people may say it is not about black and white. she is talking about her and caitlin clark and caitlin clark getting such a big hoopla. it really is that you can be top-notch at what you are as a black woman, but maybe that's something people don't want to see, they don't see it as marketable, so it doesn't matter how hard i work. really? do you think that is right? i mean, i would say the three biggest stars, most untouchable stars are oprah, michelle obama, and beyonci. so -- and serena williams, simone biles, lebron james, michael jordan, i mean, come on. >> caitlin clark at the tangible quality that nobody could quantify. what that is is the ability to put asses in seats. you don't know who is going to be at the draw and who is not going to be at the draw. there are plenty of white women basketball players that have come through that have been great, but they just haven't been able to draw the type of audience that caitlin clark has and i think the other thing with caitlin, anytime you are a race that is in an industry that usually doesn't excel in that industry, it is going to be more of a spectacle. whether it is tiger woods in golf, whether it is eminem in hip-hop, obama in politics. when you are a race within an industry that usually doesn't have people from that race excelling in the industry, it gives people more perspective. >> you think it is a problem that this young woman -- there are so many examples where, i mean, black people are very marketable. and she seems to have been indoctrinated into this -- they don't see it as marketable, so it doesn't matter how hard i work. you think that is accurate or healthy? >> she has been in the league for six, seven years, she has two mvps, she won a couple championships, she is just getting this now. right? caitlin clark got a $20 million nike deal already as a rookie. so, how do you explain that? >> because this is somebody who apparently -- again, i don't know anything about women's basketball -- but, they said that she broke all the records in college. >> in college, yeah. >> i mean, when people come into the league and they are like the biggest thing in college, isn't that a big deal? >> a'ja wilson was the biggest thing when she came out of south carolina, where i am from. she came out as the number one draft pick and she didn't get all of that, so how do you explain that? >> you are saying that is racist? >> no, i'm not saying that's racist. i'm just saying i think a'ja wilson has a point. i think when a black woman says certain things, we should listen. especially her. >> no, no, no. but, why was serena williams such a big star? they didn't not watch her because she was black, right? >> yeah. >> okay. so, where are we with this? >> i don't know! i'm just sitting back, observing the conversation, you know? >> you are in the conversation. what do you mean? >> i'm not a woman. >> you're in this conversation. >> i'm not a woman. i guess what are you asking me? what is the question you are asking me? are you asking me if it is racist? >> is caitlin clark's success only because she is white? >> like i said, when you are a race that excels in an industry where that race usually doesn't excel, it is more of a spectacle. and the fact that she is actually really, really good. like you said, she broke the scoring record in college. but, more importantly, people watch her, people sit down in seats, they come to games before -- because of her, so all of that plays a part. i don't know why we are acting like it is one thing. it could be race, it could be the fact that -- >> in fact, it is. >> it could be all of those things. >> before we run out of time, i know you want to talk about therapy, your time in it, what you think is most valuable about it, and how you can get other people involved. >> oh, man. i'm just a big advocate for therapy. i started going to therapy in 2016 and it has just changed my life, because i think a lot of times, me, i was a person dealing with a lot of anxiety, dealing with thoughts of depression, trauma i had never dealt with. just sitting down and having conversations with people about it, just going on this journey, period. that is therapy. i have been to therapy, plant- based medicine, into meditation -- >> plant-based medicine? i think i am into that, too. >> bill, you are. you are. i have tried it all, though. weed, i have done micro dosing, i have done iowa oscar, but it is also just taking your shoes off, taking your socks off, walking around barefoot in your backyard. i call that grounding. >> and why do you think there is so much resistance that people have for getting into therapy? >> well -- >> is it a stigma? >> i think there is a stigma. my father is an example because in 2018 after i wrote my second book about me dealing with anxiety, depression, going to therapy for it, my father actually called me because he had read the book and i actually had a cousin who committed suicide that week. i remember my father told me, you know, man, i was going to therapy two or three times a week. i tried to kill myself 30 years ago, i was on 10, 12 medications throughout my life. so eventually, i just started giving him a check. i remember going to my mom and saying, mom, you don't got to do with all this. she said, i just thought it was plain crazy to give the check. that is usually what they do. they just throw money at the problems instead of trying to get to the root of it. but, if my dad had felt safe enough to have those conversations with me years ago, i wouldn't have thought i was just bugging out whenever i smoke sativa. >> all right. well, the book is called "get honest or die lying" -- >> that's right! that's right next -- >> great to see you. see you next time. okay, charlamagne! will now, we have our panel! hey! all right. so, the cohost of abc's the view, ana navarro is back with us. nice to see you again. he writes the weekly column, "the end of my career," on sub stack, the author of the book, "in defense of elitism". joel stein is back with us. good to see you, sir. okay, a quick programming note. charlamagne was kind enough to mention i do have a book out with this comedian, ted. it's okay. now, i do agree, i want to thank you very much because i interview authors all the time like i just did. we have a dilemma, i am now an author, but i can't interview myself. so, next week, i am going to be the guest because i am an author. and i said, could i get the greatest interview in the world? no. but, i have been to the vatican, i was thrown out of the vatican. >> you were thrown out of the vatican? >> yeah. well, no, not actually. >> today, he said it is okay to laugh at god, so i think there is a chance that we might not burn in hell. >> i am glad we are starting off the show agreeing. so, this week was a good week for me. to understand, i am fed up with both the right and the left. i will tell you why, briefly, to you both, then we will get to them individually. the right, because they seem to be subverting the justice system and have no respect for either elections or verdicts. the left, because the palestinian protest campaign has seemed to enter its kristallnacht phase. i will explain that more later. but, let's start with the justice system, i collect the justice system is shaky at best. it will always be shaky even when it is good because it is run by people, but it is still better than watching if someone floats, right? i prefer it. but, here, we have sort of an apples to apples situation here with the two trials we just had. hunter biden, donald trump. i jotted down a couple of the similarities. both fairly victimless crimes, wouldn't have been prosecuted both of them, probably, if their name wasn't biden and trump. both obviously guilty of the actual crime they were accused of, both juries unanimously came back very quickly. the difference is that no democrat said, "this is rigged, this is unfair." whereas trump them almost immediately said, we are going to go after the people who prosecuted me. one side -- you cannot both sides this -- one side believes in elections and jury verdicts, and one side does not. >> i think both sides. >> really? wow. >> everything said about how these trials are the same is true, except one is a major candidate for the republican party for president who is leading the polls and the other is like his son. it is like comparing ronald reagan to billy bush. if hunter biden goes to jail, it is not going to affect the election. but, trump is. >> well, listen, i grew up in a republican party that used to call itself the law and order party. and what we have seen now is that they are somehow against legitimate elections and also against legitimate jury verdicts. we heard that donald trump can get a fair trial in new york because everybody hated him. we heard that hunter biden couldn't get a fair trial or wasn't going to get convicted in delaware because everybody loves the bidens. but it turns out, the jury actually did the right thing. the difference is, that the hunter biden jury is out there giving interviews. the donald trump jury is hiding for fear of their lives because the law and order party has got them in the crosshairs. >> so, the question isn't whether the jury was fair, the question is if we should have these things come to trial. if we have a country that brings every politician to trial for every little thing, or their kids, or their friends -- >> you could have that argument. >> yeah, that is a different issue. >> but, once it did come to trial and the jury sat three weeks of evidence -- >> but, that is not what people are complaining about. >> they are complaining about the fact he was put on trial. >> there are people that i called donald trump's emotional support senators like marco rubio, who are doing things like comparing the american legal system to cuba. when people get sham files that end up in executions, that should make him ashamed, particularly because he represents a place where there are a bunch of cuban exiles that are the children of people that got executed. >> but, this direction. the attorney general, the one in maryland was put on trial for taking money out of her 401(k) in an emergency -- i feel like we are putting politicians on trial and we are locking her up, which is what trump threatened to do and now we are all doing >> you do think he should go on trial for the other two, right? >> yes, but i wouldn't be so sad if it didn't happen right around election season. >> listen, we need to do compare and contrast here. so, joe biden has asked about law and order, he was asked if he would pardon his son, he said no. he asked -- was asked if he would commute the sentence of his son, he said no. on the other side, you have donald trump who has said that he will pardon to january 6th insurrection us. they are not even his sons. they are just sons of bitches. >> [ cheers and applause ] >> i heard they were tourists. >> oh, that's right! >> some of them actually were. it was a hodgepodge, people that had bad intent, and others who just wandered in. >> the ones who were indicted, the ones who were convicted? the insurrectionist's, they are sons of bitches. >> yes, some of them are. but, can we separate these two things? going to trial, bringing him to trial, i was never a big fan of this trial to begin with because i don't think you can win it in the hearts of the public. >> which one? >> the one that he just went through, the hush money. >> hunter? >> no, the hush money trial. it should have been brought federally if it was going to be brought at all because it was an election interference trial. he could have affected the election but a lot of things affect the election, i agree this looks shady if they should have done it, they should have done it months ago, years ago, they have had four years to do it and they didn't. we are talking about this other issue which is respecting verdicts and i think you make a very good case, you can't have this situation where people are afraid that their vote on a jury is going to put a target on their back, and that is what trump is doing. that is to say -- >> they put their lives on hold, they sat baited -- basically getting no perdiem for six weeks, seven weeks, eight weeks, and listened to the evidence, one after the other. they sat there, and donald trump called a freezing room. they didn't even complain about the climate inside the courtroom. and they can't even show their faces in public for fear of their lives and for fear of what could happen to their families. that is an embarrassment. >> could i ask one more question about hunter biden? then, i would like to stop talking about him except for the piece that is really funny. now, i don't really get this, the thing with the laptop. >> so crazy. >> okay, if you forget what happened here, he has a laptop, now he is a crackhead. so, he drops it off at a repair shop? >> yes. >> i didn't even know they existed. >> at a strip mall. >> well, like, where? at the palace? of course it is going to be in a strip mall. he forgets it, forgets to retrieve it. okay, that is a little weird, but i understand. but then, its contents become the property of the repair shop, and that seems to have happened legally? again, i don't understand the justice department all the time. so, because he forgets to pick up his laptop, this guy now owns it and sells it to fox news? he's taking pictures of his dick, disseminated to everybody in the media who could then hold it up in congress, is there a legal mind here that can explain that to me? raise them right, that is what you can do. for as long as i have had a television show, the issue of parents overindulging their children has been a topic of discussion, so it is not like it is new. but, it hasn't gotten better, either. we were talking about trophy syndrome in 1993. then, it was helicopter parenting. then, bulldozer parenting. now, we have gentle parenting. or, as it used to be known, "negotiating with terrorists." >> [ audience reacts ] >> british author, sarah rockwell smith, coined the term. the key here is really thinking, what i like it if someone did this to me? if the answer is, no, then why would you do it to your child? because they are a child. would i like it if someone stripped me naked and plopped me down in a tub of water? no. but, for a kid, that is just bathtime. i keep hearing how parenting is so hard these days -- yeah, because you are making it hard. gentle parenting is like a taco bell breakfast. the reason it feels wrong is because it is. and it is ruining lives on both sides of the equation. parents, it is ruining your lives because you have made yourself a butler to a 5-year- old. and the kids, because the results are in, and all of this letting the kids run the show, path of least resistance childrearing is harming them. the average high school kid today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s. a recent survey of employers found about 1 in 5 recent college graduates brought their parents with them to a job interview. our kids are crippled with anxiety because they haven't been properly prepared for a world that doesn't revolve around them. >> [ applause ] >> exactly! almost 10% of college students claim to have ptsd. from college, the cradle of safeties, the home of safe spaces, and trigger warnings, and policing offensive words? you are not supposed to get ptsd in college. you are supposed to get an std. >> [ audience reacts ] >> the national institutes of health says that roughly half of teenagers now have a mental health disorder at some point in their lives, which tells me one thing, the national institutes of health is also part of the problem. >> [ applause ] >> the mental health disorder is on the part of the adults, not the children. the adults, who forgot that to a child, discipline is love, and that kids need structure and authority. of course they think they have traumatic stress disorder when they go to college, if before they left the house, they never heard the word "no." >> [ applause ] >> never heard "you're wrong." never heard "wait, wait." a lot of life is waiting. waiting for your boss to recognize your worth, waiting for love to bloom, waiting for your career to take off, waiting for your partner to be finished in the bathroom. >> [ audience reacts ] >> waiting for your porn to download. for your vape to charge. for the drugs to kick in. >> [ applause ] >> for your eyebrows to grow back after you do something stupid on drugs. it's vitally -- vital you learn as a kid how much of life is going to be waiting. and, boundaries. jesus, yes, boundaries. sex dolls set more boundaries than today's parents. >> [ laughter ] [ applause ] >> this is why the traditional dad, the trad dad, needs to make a comeback. not all the way back to the 1950s psychopath who never said i love you and hit you with a belt, no. but, just back to the debt that believes, "because i said so" is a perfectly legitimate answer to any question a child may have. just back to the dad that would never say anything as stupid as "my kid is my hero." or, "where do you want to eat dinner?" or, "one more story, then we really have to think about going to bed, okay?" yeah -- >> [ applause ] >> trad dads don't negotiate. they say, you will apologize to your mother, don't make me turn this car around. some things just happen because life is unfair. clean your room. be quiet, the adults are talking. and it is not all about you. >> [ applause ] >> mostly, a trad dad knows he is your parent, not your friend.
