wind, lighterthan areas of scotland. a north—westerly wind, lighter than yesterday, just driving showers across northern ireland, western wales and across central southern england. there are also some sunny spells. temperatures generally between 9—14. around about the seasonal average. through this evening and overnight, that rain clears away from scotland, the winds are lighter, there will be some mist and fog developing in northern ireland. look out towards the south—west, that rain approaching from the deep area of low pressure. it will feel chilly, temperatures rising with that milder air coming to the south—west. here is the low. a tight squeeze and the isobars. they winds will not be as strong as with storm ciaran, but still some deals across the channel islands, gust of around 40—50 mph, along with heavy, persistent rain across much of the south—west. moving further northwards, a rash of heavy thundery showers following behind. for southern england and south wales. towards the north of england and northern ireland, also much of scotland, away from the east, it should be a largely dry day. temperatures again, 10—14. watch out for further showers, particularly towards the south and the east coast as we had through saturday evening. the same sort of pattern is set to repeat itself. that deep area of low pressure again moves out into the north sea. this time we draw in more of a north—westerly wind, so the focus of the showers will change as we had through sunday. they will be mostly for the north and west. across the western isles of north—west scotland, western after the world cup for ben stokes, but he hopes to be fit for the test series against india in the new year. ten hag's in familiar territory, but can the manchester united boss revive his side's fortunes? time to reflect for wales, despite a late fightback, as they lose a thriller in their final match of the inaugural wxv. hello and welcome to the programme. plenty to come, but we'll start with the news that england test captain ben stokes will undergo surgery after the current world cup to address his ongoing knee issue. stokes* knee has been a long—term problem, with the all—rounder unable to bowl and playing only as a batter during the tournament in india. they return to india for a five—match test series, starting on 25th january. stokes says he hopes to be fit for that and disagrees with the view that he returned too early. i have no regrets whatsoever of going back here. playing in a world cup for your country, if we were in the better position i wouldn't be getting asked this question. it was the right decision and i have no regrets whatsoever. well, as stokes alluded to there, it's been a dismal cricket world cup for the defending champions, who find themselves bottom of the ten team table. butjoe root insists it's still a huge motivator to play for your country. the semifinals are all but beyond england, who face old foes australia tomorrow. after a poor start, the aussies have won four games in a row. despite that, root has said he would still pick every one of his england team—mates over his rivals from down under. it's a comment that hasn't bothered australian captain pat cummins. imean, of i mean, of course he would say that, we would say the same about our team so i didn't read too much into it. obviously they have some class players and have performed really well in the last few years. these tournaments are fickle. you can see an t20 tournament throughout the world, sometimes the best —looking teams don't start off well and find it hard to gain ground. there is one match today and afghanistan started it still with a chance of reaching the semifinals. they're up against the netherlands, who decided to bat after winning the toss. it was a struggle for the dutch, who weren't helped by three run—outs. further wickets followed to leave them 113—6. they were finally all out for 179 with 21 balls of their innings spare. afghanistan have lost a couple of wickets in their run chase, but their target is looking well within their reach. a few moments ago they were 101—2 by over 19. there's another injury blow for new zealand at the tournament too. matt henry has been ruled out with a torn hamstring. henry was injured in the defeat to south africa and could be out for a month. kyle jamieson will replace him in the squad ahead of their crucial match match against pakiston on saturday, with top four hopes for both at stake. the black caps have suffered injuries throughout the tournament, including captain kane williamson recovering from a fractured thumb. liverpool bossjurgen klopp has said he will allow luis diaz to choose whether or not to play in their match against luton on sunday. diaz returned to training this week following his father's kidnapping in colombia. reports from the country suggest the guerrilla group eln are holding him and will release him soon, but the exact details of the rescue aren't clear at the moment. klopp says the decision rests with diaz over his availability. then dues from colombia, i didn't get it personally, i get it forwarded. everything gives us a little bit of hope. we are waiting actually for the really good news, but that's it, pretty much. i cannot really say what we will do because we just weights where we can pick up the boy from and go from there, but it's all about him if he makes himself available or not and i will not force anything. that game for klopp on sunday, but there are seven games tomorrow. all eyes will be at craven cottage, with fulham hosting manchester united in the early game. the united manager, erik ten hag, is under pressure once again following successive 3—0 home defeats by manchester city and newcastle. he's admitted united are "in a bad place", but club officials have attempted to play down speculation about his future. they've dropped to eighth in table, but there is optimism ten hag can turn them around. ido i do think that it can be turned around and it requires everybody to do theirjob a little bit better, to really dig in, to group up and become a unit. players have to step up, there is no doubt about that. at the end of the day we can talk about ownership of the football club, the manager of the football club, but the people doing the job on the pitch of the most important ones. they have to go out there and fight. against newcastle, you just wonder where those players are mentally. the minimum you can do is run and fight. it needs a change in mentality and approach to everything. that of course is something that the manager has to help the players with. i don't know, is he a very strict manager? is he running i really disciplined dressing room? i don't know about that, but if he is, loosen the grip a little bit. make the players feel a little bit. make the players feel a bit better and you started out with him, erik ten hag, is he the right manager? i don't know, this is a we stand united in support the manager. there is also a feast of fa cup action this weekend, starting this evening where history will be made when amateur side sheppey united, from kent, make their first ever appearance in the first round proper. the team play in the eighth tier of english football, so four divisions below the professional football league, and have been building up to this. they've knocked out billericay town in the last qualifying round. tonight they will welcome league two club walsall, one of two ties later on, with barnsley hosting non—league horsham. now to rugby union and wales ended their debut wxv campaign without a win after failing to beat iii—player australia in auckland. but they made a real go of it in theirfinal match of the inaugural competition. the wallaroos played almost the entire second half without siokapesi palu, who was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle. a blow, but not enough to hold them back. australia still managed to run in three tries, which proved enough, despite a late wales fightback. australia's victory follows their win against france last weekend. wales end the tournament at the bottom of the table. the inaugural tournament finishes tomorrow with france playing canada and england taking on new zealand. director of women's world rugby sally horrox has admitted that going forward she will make sure that the competition doesn't clash with the men's world cup again. she also conceded some of the crowds have been small, for what's been a flagship international women's tournament, but she's been encouraged by tv viewing figures. yes, the fan base needs to grow, will grow. it will evolve in time. this is the first time this competition has come to town, so there is a degree of introduced in there is a degree of introduced in the competition to the public. visibility is so important for the sport, so people can see the girls can play rugby and they can see the quality of the game. we need our fans to have more access and see more quality rugby. we've had streaming in a plus countries all over the world. we had 15 broadcast partners, and some of those streams that are happening on rugby past tv, they are surpassing some of the pool games in the rugby world cup. we are seeing a global appetite. ben stokes will undergo knee surgery after the cricket world cup is over, it is a long—term knee problem he has had. england are bottom of the table at the cricket world cup. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app or from our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and
