HANOVER – Candidates for office in Hanover s election races talked about racial violence, the town s pandemic response and school curriculum concerns during a virtual forum hosted by the Hanover Woman s Club Juniors on Tuesday night. Three candidates – Steve Louko, David Sawin and incumbent David Delaney – are competing for two open seats on the board of selectmen. Three candidates are running for two available seats on the school committee: Ryan Hall and incumbents John Geary and Libby Corbo. Voting in the town election will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Hanover High School, 287 Cedar St. All three selectmen candidates were asked to consider the recent rise in violence and racial tension in the U.S., and asked what their positions are on equity, inclusion and diversity. Heavyweight life science developer Alexandria Real Estate Equities has a deal in place to buy the Watertown Mall, according to four real estate industry executives familiar with the deal. The sale has not closed, and thus could yet fall through, but if it goes through, the deal would represent the latest burst in an explosion of life sciences development along Arsenal Street in Watertownâs East End. ....

As the death toll from COVID-19 in Massachusetts surpassed 12,000 this week and continues to climb, there is hope as the state starts to administer vaccines. The country has also been through massive political upheaval. The killing of George Floyd and other Black Americans by police has spurred a reckoning on systemic racism. The state is on the cusp of new police reforms that have worked their way through the Legislature onto Baker s desk, and diversity and inclusion are now a goal for more civic institutions. ....
Hanover Crossing replaces the Hanover Mall, which was demolished this year. The permitting fees in Hanover are tied to the cost of construction. The Market Basket store is estimated to cost $14.4 million, which means it paid the town $144,000 for the building permit. The much smaller Chipotle is estimated to cost $1 million, for a building permit cost of $10,000. Market Basket representatives have not returned requests for comment. Town meeting voters rejected a citizens petition for a liquor license at Market Basket after liquor store owners complained about possible competition. The supermarket will sit roughly where the Walmart store was in the Hanover Mall, although farther back to provide for more parking, Hanover Mall General Manager Ed Callahan previously said. ....
