Orono, Maine The origins of ice age climate changes may lie in the Southern Hemisphere, where interactions among the westerly wind system, the Southern Ocean and the tropical Pacific can trigger rapid, global changes in atmospheric temperature, according to an international research team led by the University of Maine.
The mechanism, dubbed the Zealandia Switch, relates to the general position of the Southern Hemisphere westerly wind belt the strongest wind system on Earth and the continental platforms of the southwest Pacific Ocean, and their control on ocean currents. Shifts in the latitude of the westerly winds affects the strength of the subtropical oceanic gyres and, in turn, influences the ....

Sea-level rise drives wastewater leakage to coastal waters

When people think of sea level rise, they usually think of coastal erosion. However, recent computer modeling studies indicate that coastal wastewater infrastructure, which includes sewer lines and cesspools, is likely to flood with groundwater as sea-level rises.
A new study, published by University of Hawai i (UH) at Mānoa earth scientists, is the first to provide direct evidence that tidally-driven groundwater inundation of wastewater infrastructure is occurring today in urban Honolulu, Hawai i. The study shows that higher ocean water levels are leading to wastewater entering storm drains and the coastal ocean creating negative impacts to coastal water quality and ecological health. ....

URBANA, Ill. ¬- As the global population grows, the demand for food increases while arable land shrinks. A new University of Illinois study investigates how rice production in India can meet future needs by adapting to changing climate conditions and water availability.
Rice is the primary crop in India, China, and other countries in Southeast Asia. Rice consumption is also growing in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, says Prasanta Kalita, professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at U of I and lead author on the study. ....

Climate change may not expand drylands

 E-Mail
Does a warmer climate mean more dry land? For years, researchers projected that drylands including deserts, savannas and shrublands will expand as the planet warms, but new research from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) challenges those prevailing views.
Previous studies used atmospheric information, including rainfall and temperature, to make projections about future land conditions. The real picture is more complicated than that, said Kaighin McColl, Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences and of Environmental Science and Engineering at SEAS and senior author of the paper.
Historically, we have relatively good records of rainfall and temperature but really poor records of the land surface, things like soil moisture and vegetation, said McColl. As a result, previous definitions of drylands are based only on how the atmosphere is behaving, as an approximation of the land surface. But models can ....
