Tim Lucky, a Sanford School senior, scored three goals with one assist and won 18 of 24 face-offs in the Warriors’ thrilling 11-10 home win over “unlucky” Cape Henlopen.
The Vikings had possession with under two minutes remaining in a 10-10 game, but an errant pass turned the ball over to Sanford. Lucky scored the game-winner unassisted from way out front with just 13 seconds left in the game, and it was all over except the celebration.

Jackson Handlin (195), who was 34-13 last season. Cape will open the wrestling season Wednesday, Jan. 13, hosting Sussex Central. Caravel Academy, with four state champions in the lineup, will be at Cape Monday, Jan. 25.
Fun to watch - The Cape girls’ basketball team should be fun to watch this season – too bad most of you will never see them play. Cape basketball has a 14-game schedule, playing each Northern Division opponent twice. Last season, the Vikings beat each Northern Division opponent twice before losing to Woodbridge in the Henlopen Conference Championship game, then advancing to the semifinals to face Sanford when the season got canceled due to COVID. That was way harsh because Cape had a legit shot to bring home the first state title since 1973. “They wanted to play at The Bob,” coach Pat Woods said. “They were so upset they never got the chance.” Gone from that team are

Ryan Baker
The top 10 runners in Division I all broke 17 minutes at the Dec. 5 cross country state championships. The Vikings needed a high place and low number from Ryan Baker and got it, as he hung with the leaders from post to paddock, running 16:30 on the slippery Killens Pond trails to place third overall. Oddly, Salesianum placed first, seventh and eighth, yet trailed Cape 14-16 behind Baker in 16:30, Ethan Edery, fifth in 16:46 and Julian Callaway, sixth in 16:48. “Ryan was out of contact because of COVID quarantine, missing the Sussex County meet, but he trained on his own and came back ready to compete,” said coach Matt Lindell. “His improvement over a period of time has been remarkable. His mental toughness is what makes him great. He is not afraid of the big moments; not to mention, he is talented.”
