The Cape Henlopen girls’ track & field team finished off an emotional dual-meet season with an undefeated record of 8-0. Next up are the Henlopen Conference Championships to be held at Jim Blades Stadium at Lake Forest High School in Felton. The Vikings lost teammate Maggie Browne during spring break in a terrible accident and dedicated their season to the late sophomore jumper.
“We wore the letter ‘M’ on our uniforms as we dedicated each meet to Maggie,” said junior Tia Jarvis. “The Smyrna girls presented our team with a large framed picture of Maggie, which was so nice, and we take the picture of her to every meet. She was definitely a part of each win with the girls.”
Emma Duffield wins the 1,600.
Amaya to Aya Daisey in the 4-by-100 relay.
The Cape girls’ track team is sitting at 4-0 and the boys’ team is 1-3 with three meets to go before the Henlopen Conference and Delaware State Championships.
The Lady Vikings are coming off a big win at Smyrna April 16, when Cape topped the Eagles 82-64. Both teams won two relays and traded points on the track and in the field. Going into the meet’s final event, the mile relay, the Vikings were up 72-69. The winner of the race would be the meet winner. The team of Hannah Maney, Aya Daisey, Regan Ciabattoni and Tia Jarvis easily won in 4:17, and the team celebrated the victory. A later disqualification and a mistake in the scoring put the Vikings at 82 points on the day. Smyrna has one loss on the season and will be a much tougher big-meet team in May. The Vikings are expecting it and looking forward to the challenge.

The Seashore Striders hosted the 15th Run With Santa 5K at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes Dec. 12 and accomplished the four goals I set for the event. We attracted more than 100 participants again during a worldwide pandemic and hosted another safe event. The run raised money for the local Toys for Tots campaign; we team up with Apple Electric each year. We raised money for a local family in need that just suffered a loss in a local fire at their home. Lastly, we collected canned foods for the local Needy Family Fund.
“So much good came out of this event today, and it is great that we can help so many people in the community with these events the Seashore Striders host,” said longtime runner Richard Tikiob.

Ryan Baker
The top 10 runners in Division I all broke 17 minutes at the Dec. 5 cross country state championships. The Vikings needed a high place and low number from Ryan Baker and got it, as he hung with the leaders from post to paddock, running 16:30 on the slippery Killens Pond trails to place third overall. Oddly, Salesianum placed first, seventh and eighth, yet trailed Cape 14-16 behind Baker in 16:30, Ethan Edery, fifth in 16:46 and Julian Callaway, sixth in 16:48. “Ryan was out of contact because of COVID quarantine, missing the Sussex County meet, but he trained on his own and came back ready to compete,” said coach Matt Lindell. “His improvement over a period of time has been remarkable. His mental toughness is what makes him great. He is not afraid of the big moments; not to mention, he is talented.”
