Spring skiing is such a different experience than deep winter skiing that it honestly should be thought of as a second season. While the winter months are characterized by intense storm cycles, freezing temperatures, and mercifully limited daylight granted the payoff is incredible powder days spring is all about long sunny days, groomed runs and parks, and slushy afternoon slopes and maybe a few fresh powder days, because…spring.
The contrast between a week spent at a ski area during the December holidays versus March and April could not be starker. For starters, you’ve got an entire winter’s worth of snow depth to ski on providing great coverage. And the frothing crowds that throng to the mountains have had their fill (or at least mellowed out). Plus, the sun stays high up ....

Considering avalanche warnings, dangerous driving conditions and the promise of even more snow in the Cascade Mountains, Friday may not be a great day for a trip to Mount Hood.
Conditions on Oregon’s tallest mountain were bad enough Friday morning that two ski areas – Timberline Lodge and Mt. Hood Skibowl – closed for the day and night, as heavy snowfall and high winds brought about an increased danger of avalanches.
The Northwest Avalanche Center issued a “high” danger warning on Mount Hood that is in effect through 6 p.m., warning that “heavy snowfall and extreme winds will make natural and human-triggered avalanches likely at all elevations.” Avalanche warnings don’t apply to highways or parts of ski areas where avalanche mitigation is performed. ....

Mt. Hood Meadows will stay closed Monday due to high winds, rain and ice and ongoing power outages from recent storms that require the ski resort to run on generators.
Gusts as high as 89 mph have been recorded at Mt. Hood’s Cascade Express weather station. Temperatures are just below freezing at 30 degrees.
Freezing rain has caused icing on the lifts as well as treacherous driving conditions, said Dave Tragethon, vice president of sales and marketing. ....
