Police Concerned About Rise in Air Bag Thefts Police have serious concerns about a recent increase in airbag thefts. From January 1 to April 30, 2021, authorities say there have been more than 90 airbag thefts reported countywide – specifically in the areas of Bethesda and Silver Spring. Why airbags? Montgomery County Police say airbags can be expensive to purchase and install. Stolen airbags are often sold on the black market. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a new airbag that retails for about $1,000 from a car dealer will cost $50 to $200 on the black market. Police say stolen airbags might be sold as new by someone who will charge the customer or the insurance company full price. ....
Crimes reported to Montgomery County police Jan. 24 through 30 By Dan Schere | February 11, 2021 Thefts from vehicles Property was taken from a vehicle in the 8800 block of Lanier Drive between 8 p.m. on Jan. 28 and 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 29. Force was reported. Money, property and parts were taken from multiple vehicles between Jan. 26 and 28. Affected streets included North Chelsea Lane, Hillandale Road and Battery Lane. Force was reported in multiple cases. Property was taken from multiple vehicles between Jan. 23 and 29. Affected streets included Jones Bridge Court, Altimont Lane, Lawrence Avenue, Warner Street, Wildwood Road and Perry Avenue. Force was reported in two cases. ....
Crimes reported to Montgomery County police between Nov. 29 and Dec. 5 By Dan Schere | December 18, 2020 Thefts from vehicles Parts were taken from two vehicles between Nov. 28 and Dec. 2. The thefts happened in the 5700 block of Bou Avenue and the 12300 block of Wilkins Avenue. Force was reported in one case. Property was taken from a vehicle in the 7800 block of Havenside Terrace between 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 7 a.m. on Dec. 5. Force was reported. Property was taken from a vehicle in the 11700 block of Devilwood Drive between 8 p.m. on Nov. 28 and noon on Nov. 29. Vehicle theft A vehicle was taken in the 15800 block of Crabbs Branch Way between 1 p.m. on Nov. 25 and 10 a.m. on Nov. 26. ....
Recent airbag thefts in Bethesda are part of a regional trend, police say 17 were taken on Battery Lane alone By Dan Schere | December 18, 2020 Montgomery County police say a raft of airbag thefts in Bethesda earlier this month is part of a regional trend, in which the airbags are sold on the black market to repair shops. Between Dec. 3 rd and 5 th, 30 airbags were stolen from vehicles in Bethesda, police spokeswoman Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti told Bethesda Beat on Thursday. Innocenti said the main areas where the thefts occurred were on Hillandale Road, Battery Lane and Bradley Boulevard. “Our detectives have noted that it’s a regional trend, so it’s occurring in other jurisdictions in the D.C. area, and it appears to have now come into our county,” she said. “So, we’re actively investigating these thefts but also working with our regional partners to try to identify these [thieves].” ....
