After the completion of emergency repairs, and another inspection, all evacuated residents at a building in Brunswick Point Apartment Homes in Leland have been allowed to return, according to a news release from the town. Last week, reports of two separate injuries at 1008 Hunterstone Drive prompted the Town of Leland to evacuate a portion of the building on April 14. Inspectors found structurally compromised stairways and started the condemnation process on all buildings at the complex but the issue was serious enough at one building to be a violation of the N.C. Fire Code. First- and second-floor residents of the building were able to return to their units on Friday and third-floor residents were granted access on Tuesday, said Hilary Snow, communications officer. ....
The Town of Leland started the condemnation process for all 12 buildings within one apartment complex on Wednesday following structural issues on multiple stairways. According to a press release from the town, it received two separate reports of injuries Wednesday morning at one building of Brunswick Point Apartment Homes, located at 1008 Hunterstone Drive, and evacuated certain units. According to a report from Leland Fire and Rescue, a pizza delivery person fell through the concrete steps at the building on Tuesday night. There is another report of a woman falling through the steps the following day. During inspections at Brunswick Point, Leland building inspectors identified structurally compromised stairways and issued notices of condemnation of the complex’s 11 other buildings. ....
Leland Police Department uses CrimeMapping so users can enter their address in Leland and suss out criminal activity that has been reported in the area. (Port City Daily/Screenshot by Shea Carver) LELAND The Leland Police Department has been providing residents a crime-mapping source to track offenses that have taken place in their city, on their streets and in their neighborhoods over the last few years. According to town spokesperson Hilary Snow, it’s part of the police department’s mission to strengthen relationships within the community and communication. “The benefit to residents is that they can access crime data on their own without having to request police reports, and they can access that data as often as they want, and pinpoint certain areas of [t]own and/or particular incidents that may be of interest or concern to them,” Snow said. ....
First, some background In February 2016, the Charlotte City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in public accommodations. Before the ordinance took effect, a special session of the N.C. General Assembly was called to respond. On March 23, the legislature passed House Bill 2 and Gov. Pat McCrory signed it into law that night. The bill stated that state law pre-empted any local anti-discrimination ordinances and, according to a New York Times article at the time, “required schools and other public facilities with single-gender washrooms to only allow people of the corresponding sex as listed on their birth certificate to use them.” ....
Founders Park, 113 Town Hall Dr. For a decade, the outlying suburb of Wilmington celebrated Christmas by merely lighting the town tree. As the area has grown, so have its celebrations. The Town of Leland rebranded Founders Park in 2018 and in 2019 launched Leland in Lights. “This is fairly new, but already very popular,” town spokesperson Hilary Snow said. “The goal has always been to continue to grow the event and offer new attractions each year.” The singing Christmas trees are a highlight of Leland in Lights. (Port City Daily/Shea Carver) Despite it being a pandemic year, the town is welcoming around 700 people weekly as the grounds illuminate at dusk. The park features large motion displays, including snowmen playing baseball, two children having a snowball fight, even Old Man Winter blowing cold weather to the south. Santa shows up a few times and his reindeer also make an appearance. ....
