Farm life to be discussed during library event HICKORY â Have you ever wondered what life is like living on and managing a working farm? Dawn Mathews, owner of The Thankful Goat, will be sharing humorous stories of farm life in a virtual Zoom presentation Thursday, May 20, at 6 p.m. Mathews is the owner of The Thankful Goat, a business featuring goat milk products which is based in Lenoir. In 2009, she bought a goat with thoughts of making delicious cheeses for her family. The goat, Athena, had other ideas and promptly ate a bush that is toxic to goats. This required an antitoxin shot which rendered her milk undrinkable for 10 days. Dawn decided to make soap with the undrinkable milk. Since those days, Mathews and her family have moved from a half-acre microfarm to a 15-acre farm they built for themselves while living in a camper. ....
Western Piedmont Symphony to hold âComeback Concertâ The Western Piedmont Symphony will return to symphonic music with a Comeback Concert on Saturday, May 15, live at J.E. Broyhill Civic Center and via livestream at 7:30 p.m. This concert will feature Mozartâs Overture to âCosì fan tutte,â Haydnâs Symphony No. 82, âThe Bear,â and Joseph Bologneâs Violin Concerto in C Major, featuring violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins. Winner of a Naumburg International Violin Competition Honorarium Prize and featured in the Smithsonian Museum for African-American History, Hall-Tompkins is a violin soloist entrepreneur who has been acclaimed by the New York Times as âthe versatile violinist who makes the music come alive,â for her tonal mastery. ....

This Jones Hope Wooten play revolves around four friends who promised the night of their high school prom that they would be bridesmaids in one anotherâs weddings. Thirty years later, the weddings are still happening, but not without setbacks such as fistfights, cold feet and bad timing as the doves are released. âAlways a Bridesmaidâ will be onstage May 7-16.
