Itâs sooner than he would have liked, a circumstance forced by his 2018 diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma, which had progressed to a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2020. âI was forced to officially retire at 20 years of service instead of my anticipated 25 years due to declining health,â Metzler says. Fire damages garage of home on Van Raalte Ave.; no injuries reported Sentinel Staff The Holland Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 684 Van Raalte Ave., at 1:31 p.m. Saturday. The initial caller indicated that smoke and flames were visible. The first unit arrived at 1:36 p.m. and visible flames were showing with the garage of the home a main part of the flames, according to the fire department. All occupants including the family pet safely escaped the home prior to the arrival of the department. According to the department, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire and limit fire damage to the garage area of the home before clearing the scene at 4 p.m. This effort also eliminated any damage or flame spread to neighboring homes. Additionally, there were no injuries to occupants or responding firefighters. Damage estimates are not available at this time. ....
