The late Trevor Malloch had started the Lawnmasters and later when they briefly lapsed, Ewan Westergaard was the catalyst in reviving them. They have been expensive beasts, especially when the professional versions started in 2013. This one should render a slight financial gain for the club and in the past they have mostly broken even. They need ample prizemoney to attract the best players from sponsors such as property developer Brian Green, again this year aided by Palmerston North city s contribution. Preparing the course for such an event piles on the workload and overtime for the greenkeepers and for the general manager in seeking out sponsorship. ....
For many players the event was used as trials for representative teams and for the upcoming interclub programme for Manawatū-Whanganui, with visiting players from Wellington, Auckland and Wairarapa chasing order of merit points. The members net was won by Jonathon Andrieux from Palmerston North on 140, with Feilding’s Bruce Merhtens on 142 and four players on 144. Palmerston North’s Casey Chettleburgh was the runaway winner in the Palmerston North Classic for women, shooting 155 and winning by eight shots from teenager Sera Raj of the Whanganui Golf Club.
