Thursday, April 23, 2020 The landmark Dewey Beach lighthouse that sat adjacent to Rehoboth Bay for decades until an April 2020 arson destroyed it will not be rebuilt, town officials said. The fire also burned the Lighthouse Restaurant, which was then under construction, caused $750,000 in damages, and was being investigated as arson, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal John M. Galaska said. A month after the fire, former Town Manager Scott Koenig said the lighthouse was deemed structurally unsafe but would be rebuilt as a requirement of a mutual agreement and release signed between the town and Dewey Beach Enterprises. Current Assistant Town Manager Jim Dedes said April 7 that the town attorney researched the agreement and said rebuilding the lighthouse was not specified as a condition Dewey Beach Enterprises, developer and owner of the Lighthouse Cove property, had to meet. ....

The Lighthouse Cove Development Company announced Jan. 22 the award would be increased from $25,000 regarding the April 23, 2020, fire that caused an estimated $750,000 in damage and which Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal John Galaska said May 6, 2020, was being investigated as an arson. The April 23 arson followed a fire set at the same location earlier that month, Galaska said. “It is still an active investigation,” Galaska said Jan. 22. Thomas J. Hanna, president of Harvey Hanna & Associates, the company overseeing the development in Dewey Beach, said the reward was increased to encourage those with additional information about the fire to come forward so that responsible parties can be brought to justice. ....

Newport-based developer Harvey, Hanna & Associates recently announced plans to open a Lewes hotel next summer. The 105-room hotel is being built near the intersection of Route 1 and Marsh Road near Five Points Square. It will be a Hyatt House, the company s extended stay brand offering suite rooms with kitchenettes. The plan for the hotel won approval in fall 2019. Harvey, Hanna & Associates (HHA) says it recently broke ground on the site. The new hotel will be next to a Home2Suites by Hilton that opened in September. That hotel is owned by the Caggiano family of Nicola s Pizza. The Hyatt House is one of several new hotels developed near the Delaware beaches in the past two years, and the second Hyatt project in Delaware by HHA. The developer built the Hyatt Place hotel in Dewey Beach, which opened in 2013. ....
