Now one comes across steel rods which are protruding by the sides of the roads like sharp weapons ready to pierce those who are a little careless, concrete drains upon which footpaths are yet to be laid, and main roads which abruptly lose connectivity with connecting roads. The people are now compelled to take a long detour to reach their destinations. Crore of rupees are being lost due to non-collection of taxes. In order to prevent this, plan should be chalked out in the budget to collect huge amount of taxes that are pending to be paid to Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), opined citizens of the city in the preliminary meeting before the budget that was held on Wednesday January 13 in the auditorium of MCC. Speaking on the occasion, social worker Hanumantha Kamath said, MCC which increases house tax by 15% every year, has not revised the building construction permission fee from 1992. G. Hanumantha Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, Mangaluru, suggested that the corporation should in the budget reserve funds for paying compensation to those people whose land will be submerged when water at the Thumbe vented dam is stored up to seven metres high. Now, the civic body is storing water up to six metres high. If water is stored up to seven metres high, the civic body will require about ₹ 145 crore to pay compensation to those whose land will be submerged. ....
