U.S. Rep. Mann visits Hutchinson industry soy protein manufacturing TVP

Mann said he wants to get to know Hutchinson better. This week, he also visited businesses and industries in Salina, Manhattan and McPherson.
I wanted to get up to speed about how things are doing in Hutchinson and Reno County, Mann said.
Mann, who was recently selected to join the House Agriculture Committee, is focused on helping farmers, ranchers and manufacturers in Kansas. Having grown up on a farm in Quinter, Mann is familiar with both raising cattle and growing crops.
During the afternoon, Mann toured Kansas Protein Foods. Since 1962, this plant has processed Midwestern-grown soy in this 150,000-square-foot factory in Hutchinson. KPF is one of a few manufacturers in the U.S. that processes both spiced and plain textured soy protein for the wholesale market. ....

First 500 COVID-19 doses in Phase 2 being administered in Reno County

Reno County Health officials announced plans Thursday to begin administering 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine received on Wednesday to elderly residents identified by local medical providers as at the highest risk.
The shots, making up the first round of vaccinations under Phase 2 of the state’s distribution plan, will occur along with continued administration of the second doses to healthcare workers under phase 1.
Health officials, meanwhile, now plan to announce next week how the public can register online for a future vaccine appointment.
The Reno County Health Department, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson Clinic, and Prairie Star Health Center are working together on the distribution as the “Reno County Medical Collaborative,” according to a county news release. ....

Health officials answer vaccine questions

Health officials answer vaccine questions
Participants had questions about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine, particularly for pregnant women or those of child-bearing age, and whether to take it after suffering a bout with the disease.
A primary issue on the minds of people participating in an online Town Hall hosted Friday by Hutchinson and Reno County health agencies, was when more vaccine will arrive and how to get in line for it.
On the latter question, Reno County interim health officer Karen Hammersmith said, there are no indications shipments of the vaccine will arrive earlier than state and federal officials previously indicated, which means late February or early March. ....

US pushes for wider use of 'underutilized' COVID-19 antibody drugs as pandemic worsens

First published on
With two highly effective coronavirus vaccines now being distributed across the country, the U.S. government’s announcement Thursday to set aside $2.6 billion for purchasing an antibody drug for COVID-19 may have raised a few eyebrows.
After all, the two currently authorized antibody drugs, from Regeneron and Eli Lilly, have not been widely used since the Food and Drug Administration cleared both in November. And the logistical issues that have hindered their launch haven’t been solved, either.
But Operation Warp Speed officials, including top FDA drug evaluator Janet Woodcock, are campaigning hard to change that, arguing the drugs are being “underutilized” in the COVID-19 response. Study results have shown the treatments can keep some sick patients from needing hospital care, which could be a huge benefit for healthcare systems under greater and greater strain.   ....
