ELIZABETHTON â The coming of spring brings a busy time for the Tweetsie Trail. Lots of bicyclists and pedestrians have returned to the trail, as well as some new users of the trail. With the renewed activity, the Johnson City Press asked Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw to go over the rules of the road for the trail, since much of the trail is inside Elizabeth-tonâs city limits. âThe Tweetsie Trail is a wonderful asset in our community and it is heavily used, but it does cross some very busy streets,â Shaw said. He said there is a stop sign on the trail at each intersection with a street or highway. He said the stops signs are there âto signal to the trail user to stop prior to crossing the roadway.â Shaw said that those on the trail âshould make sure they can cross the street safely before attempting to enter the crosswalk, and always keep in mind there are distracted drivers and those that may not be watching out for trail users.â ....
ELIZABETHTON â The popular Tweetsie Trail could possibly have its length extended by 50%, with a connection to a growing mountain bike trail section. That was the possibility being considered by the Carter County Commissionâs Building and Grounds Committee on Tuesday evening. The committee voted unanimously to recommend to the full County Commission that a donation of approximately 28 acres of land between Valley Forge and Hampton be accepted by the county. The land is on property that formerly was used for the narrow gauge tracks of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. The donation has already been studied by the Carter County Parks and Recreation Board. Chairman Ken Gough said the land could be used to extend the Tweetsie Trail from its current end at Hatcher Lane along State Line Road. He said some stretches of highways and streets would be needed for part of the trail extension, but the land could be used to build a trail from the end of Mi ....
ELIZABETHTON â After a year of pandemic, with many of Elizabethtonâs most beloved annual events canceled to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, the Elizabethton City Council is showing faith that 2021 will be a more normal year. The council unanimously approved several events that are likely to draw a large crowd. These include some of the longtime favorites, like the weekly downtown cruise-in. Others are first-time events, like the Music and Miles Half Marathon. One popular event which has yet to be approved for this year is the cityâs biggest festival, Covered Bridge Days, which may have to go later than normal because of renovations on the Elk Avenue Bridge. ....
ELIZABETHTON — Among its many other decisions on Thursday, the Elizabethton City Council will be asked to approve a new half marathon foot race to be held in May. ....
The Mendota Trail is well on its way to being completed and open to the public, but there is still a chunk of it that needs some help. The beautiful rails-to-trails project connecting Bristol, Virginia, to Mendota, a rural community on the North Fork of the Holston River, has taken large leaps in the past few months. On the Bristol end, the trail goes from the Island Road beginning all the way to Benhams, which is about five miles north into Washington County. The Mendota end only goes about a mile, but one of the big attractions is the swinging bridge that can be crossed near the current end of the segment. ....
