"White Fragility" Gets Jackie Robinson's Story Wrong

White Fragility, has been on the
New York Times best-seller list for over two years, much of that time ranked number one. The book is assigned frequently in college courses, and DiAngelo is in great demand as a “diversity” consultant to help corporations, universities, government agencies, and other institutions purge themselves of their white privilege. DiAngelo’s core message is that white Americans need to acknowledge their unconscious racial biases which make them, unwittingly in most cases, complicit in what she deems the U.S. racial caste system.
In an error that aligns perfectly with her ideology, DiAngelo gets this episode of U.S. history all wrong. ....

MLB home run leaders by US presidency

4) Jim O’Rourke: 8
5) Harry Stovey: 6
Jones had a huge year in 1879, totaling an MLB-best nine home runs to go with 85 runs scored, 62 RBIs and 29 walks in 83 games, all league bests. He would set a new career high for homers in ’83, with 10, though that came during Chester Arthur’s presidency. Hines won the Triple Crown in ’78, when he hit .358 with four home runs and 50 RBIs for the Providence Grays. He led baseball with a .357 batting average the following year, and his career high of 10 homers came in ’87 with the Washington Nationals. A big 1880 season with the Boston Red Stockings helped O’Rourke, a Hall of Famer, finish tied for second during this period. ....

The Cubs won 104 games in 1909. They finished second, 6.5 games behind the Pirates.
They won 104 games again in 1910. They won the pennant by 13 games over the Giants and 17.5 over the Pirates.
Go figure!
When the Cubs had played the Tigers in the World Series in 1908, it ended, in 5 games, on Oct. 14.
The 1910 Series, in which they faced the Athletics, did not even begin until Oct. 17. The Cubs needed a 10-inning win in Game 4 just to extend the series by a day, to Oct. 23.
But that didn t prevent the Cubs from continuing to play after the Series ended or at least try to play. ....

The lesson we can learn from 180 years ago to help us win battle against spread of Covid-19

In 1825, Daniel O’Connell was invited by the House of Lords Select Committee to give a first-hand account of the living conditions in Ireland, which he did in graphic detail.
The UK government was alarmed so it set up a royal commission chaired by the Protestant Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Richard Whately, who was also an economist.
The commission sat for three years and produced a report in 1836 which has a number of voluminous appendices which contain a vast amount of information of great historical value. (They are available at UCD Library Cultural Heritage Collections.)
The difficulty was that in Ireland, unlike Britain, there was no work available. Legislation in 1834 abolished outdoor relief and admission to the poorhouse was mandatory for those claiming relief. ....

Slugging catcher Josh Gibson always had the talent to be a Major League Baseball player. That was never in question.
But it wasn’t until last week that the man known as the “Black Babe Ruth” officially became a major leaguer.
In what Major League Baseball called a “long overdue oversight in the game’s history,” seven Negro Leagues that operated between 1920 and 1948 have been granted Major League status.
That means some 3,400 players for those Negro League teams are now Major Leaguers and that their statistics will be integrated into MLB records.
The Homestead Grays team ....
