Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital received an “A” grade in the Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital’s efforts to protect patients from errors, injuries, and infections.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns a letter grade to all general hospitals across the country every six months and is the only ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and harm.

Dr. Mary-Emma Beres was recently named the first Medical Director of Primary Care at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Hospital leaders said, with countless years of experience and education, Dr. Beres will be an excellent leader for the Hugh Chatham team and create growth within the organization.
“We are pleased to announce that Mary-Emma Beres, MD has accepted the role as Primary Care Medical Director for Hugh Chatham Medical Group. This position is designed to allow her to continue as a Family Medicine physician, while influencing system-wide decisions and performance,” said Dr. Jonathan Snyder, Chief Medical Officer.

ELKIN, N.C. North Carolina hospital staff has been working overtime since March. As a result of the pandemic, hospitals had to cancel appointments and postpone elective surgeries. It was a strategy to help free up resources for the fight against the coronavirus.
But that same strategy is costing hospitals millions of dollars.
“All the things we traditionally care for, like diabetes, chest pain, and heart failure, didn’t go away so we had those in addition to COVID,” explains Mary Blackburn, the chief clinical officer at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. ....
