A grassroots initiative has formed to help save a Winona ecological staple from the threat of invasive emerald ash borer beetles. Or perhaps more accurately stated, a “treeroots” initiative. “Our ash trees are going to die and will soon become stumps,” promotional material for the Friends of Winona Parks (FWP) said. “If we do not act now, our parks will lose hundreds of trees.” ....
The city of Winona Port Authority will vote Thursday on whether to spend $580,000 of taxpayer money to buy a parking lot and adjoining building downtown. The ProBuild site at 165 West Second Street has been eyed by the city since last year. The Port Authority plans to raze the building, which is no longer used by the company, and then turn the entire parcel into a parking lot, City Manager Steve Sarvi said Monday. Sarvi said it was not yet determined whether the spaces would be public or private. Fastenal’s new office building as well as county offices are directly across the street. ....
Drive down Huff Street right now or pass Windom Park on Broadway and you’ll see tree after tree wrapped with green ribbons. These ribbons aren’t marking them for the chainsaw. Quite the opposite the ribbon-wrapped trees are all ashes, doomed to die from emerald ash borer and be cut down in the coming years unless people like us care an awful lot. In several of Winona’s most beloved parks and boulevards, a huge percentage of the mature trees are ash. In retrospect, it was a poor decision to plant so many trees of the same species in a row, but here we are. Since the invasive, tree-killing emerald ash borer beetle came to Winona years ago, the city has invested thousands in treating ash trees with pesticides to keep them alive a bit longer and prevent them from all dying at once. 9-year-old child killed in house fire in Bibb County By WBRC Staff | February 14, 2021 at 4:26 PM CST - Updated February 14 at 4:26 PM BIBB CO., Ala. (WBRC) - A 9-year-old child died in a house fire in Bibb County Saturday night. Brent Police Chief Terry Nichols said his officers responded to a house fire on Huff Street around 10:45p.m. Nichols said officers were told someone might still be inside the home.
