Friends of Winona Parks (FOWP) would like to thank the Winona Post for their coverage of the ash tree issue in Winona’s city parks. I would also like to thank Greg Olson, Kent Grover, Chris Kramer, John Howard and all the others who volunteered their time and made contributions to this important cause.
FOWP has planted five large trees in three different Winona parks. Each tree measures two-and-a-half to three inches in diameter and is purchased and planted using local vendors. The city of Winona has agreed to water them. Two additional trees have been purchased and will be planted soon. FOWP’s goal is to plant 10 trees this year. Also, in the upcoming month, FOWP would like to treat the existing ash trees by the softball fields in Lake Park. ....

A grassroots initiative has formed to help save a Winona ecological staple from the threat of invasive emerald ash borer beetles.
Or perhaps more accurately stated, a “treeroots” initiative.
“Our ash trees are going to die and will soon become stumps,” promotional material for the Friends of Winona Parks (FWP) said. “If we do not act now, our parks will lose hundreds of trees.” ....

Treedome and WINONArts are announcing the return of the outdoor, socially distanced eight-part series of events Lake Park Drive-In: Music and Movies set to take place all summer long with outdoor live music concerts and feature film screenings at the Lake Park Bandshell. With a combination of vehicle spots and socially distanced outdoor seating, Lake Park Drive-In is bringing outdoor, accessible, family events back to Winona.
“This event was a big success with only four showings last year. We are excited to bring back this program with an expanded lineup of musicians and movies that will last all summer long,” said Maggie Panetta, production director of Treedome. ....

City Council Approves Fundraising Campaign for Trees

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)- The Winona City Council approved a fundraising initiative to preserve Winona’s ash trees and to diversify the city’s tree species.
Friends of Winona Parks will work with the city forester to remove ash trees that are not in ideal locations or are falling victim to the Emerald Ash Borer. Those trees would be replaced by a different species of tree that is at least 3-5 inches in diameter.
Howard Kruger is one of the citizens leading the effort. He told the council he has close to $10,000 in funding commitments and several people have expressed interest in planting trees. ....

Drive down Huff Street right now or pass Windom Park on Broadway and you’ll see tree after tree wrapped with green ribbons. These ribbons aren’t marking them for the chainsaw. Quite the opposite the ribbon-wrapped trees are all ashes, doomed to die from emerald ash borer and be cut down in the coming years unless people like us care an awful lot.
In several of Winona’s most beloved parks and boulevards, a huge percentage of the mature trees are ash. In retrospect, it was a poor decision to plant so many trees of the same species in a row, but here we are. Since the invasive, tree-killing emerald ash borer beetle came to Winona years ago, the city has invested thousands in treating ash trees with pesticides to keep them alive a bit longer and prevent them from all dying at once. But trees have to be treated every couple years indefinitely to remain protected. After delaying and spreading out the damage for several years, the City Counc ....
