PRC's Maestas announces campaign for state auditor

“Trust in government is waning,” Maestas said, “and I really think I can help restore citizen and taxpayer trust, so the people have more faith in those elected to serve them, instead of serving themselves.”
Maestas is seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed Brian Colón, who won the office in 2018 and is now running for attorney general.
Also campaigning for state auditor is Democrat Zack Quintero, a former state ombudsman.
Maestas said he has a history of serving as a “progressive reformer” willing to expose government wrongdoing and push for change. As a Santa Fe city councilor, he said, he sought a special audit that revealed improper spending of proceeds from a 2008 bond issue for parks. ....

Policing nursing homes and assisted living facilities during the pandemic has been difficult.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services halted on-site surveys by state agencies in March and the volunteers who work for the state’s Aging and Long-Term Care Department have been unable to enter nursing homes to respond to complaints.
In 2019, for instance, the state assigned 222 allegations of abuse to be investigated. In 2020, that number dropped to 52.

Despite the pandemic, department Secretary Katrina Hotrum-Lopez says, the department continues to receive complaints ranging from abuse to social isolation. Some, such as lack of visitation, are related to COVID-19 precautions. ....

The past nine months have been brutal for residents and employees of nursing homes and assisted living communities throughout the state.
Almost 650 residents have died of COVID-19 out of about 3,400 who have contracted the virus since the pandemic began in March.
That is out of a relatively small population of 12,000 who live in 71 nursing homes and 250 assisted living facilities around the state.

Of the 9,600 employees, more than 2,700 have tested positive for COVID-19 at some point in the past nine months. Five staffers have died of the virus. ....
