Donations are welcome for the Allegheny Valley Association of Churches food bank in Harrison.

Allegheny Valley, Cheswick fire departments working toward merger

The Allegheny Valley and Cheswick volunteer fire departments hope to officially merge this year.
In the meantime, the two departments have been informally working together, pooling their resources and manpower. The two stations are five blocks apart, and both departments have been working out of the Allegheny Valley station. Allegheny Valley serves Springdale Township and Harmar.
“The number of volunteer firefighters and people able to respond to calls is declining,” Allegheny Valley Fire Chief Rick Franks said. “Our company realized that during the day we’re only getting one or two people, and maybe the other company up the street is only getting two or three people. Together we can maybe put a crew together and have a better response.” ....

Springdale Township to start paving project

Springdale Township plans to repave several township streets this week in a project that Commissioners President Anthony Rozzano said is long overdue.
“The roads are deplorable. It’s sad,” said Rozzano. “(The township has) been saving money for the past four years to invest in the roads … where it’s needed the most.”
On Tuesday, weather permitting, High Street will be the first to be repaved. On Wednesday, at the other end of town, Stanley Avenue will be repaved. On Thursday, Carson Street will be repaved from Butler Road to Linden Street. ....

Harrison World War II Marine veteran honored on anniversary of Okinawa invasion

Frank M. Bavetz said being left-handed saved his life.
“When I was in boot camp, I told them I was a southpaw (left-handed) and they said I had to learn to shoot right-handed,” the Harrison resident said Thursday as he sat in David’s Diner, commonly known as Dave’s, in Springdale Township. “Because I couldn’t shoot well, I wasn’t put on the front line. They wanted sharpshooters. That’s why I am here today.”
Bavetz, who turns 95 on Tuesday, recalled his days in the service, where he earned the rank of sergeant with the 2nd Marine Air Wing. His World War II service included involvement in the invasion of Okinawa in Japan. The last major battle of the war, it took place 76 years ago, on April 1, 1945. ....
