Health Foundation to give away hams, potatoes Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation will distribute free ham and potatoes this month. The giveaway is limited to the first 100 individuals in need who phone the foundation to register at 724-294-3157 and provide their name, phone number and email address. Registration is limited to one ham and five-pound bag of potatoes per family per phone call. Registrants will be given instructions as to when, where and how the food will be distributed and must arrange for transportation to the distribution site. ....

Highlands plans annual Early Childhood Fair Highlands School District will host the annual Kindergarten and Pre-K Counts Registration and Early Childhood Fair March 4, 5, 11 and 12. Appointments are 45 minutes long and are available from 5 to 8 p.m. March 4 and 11, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 5 and 12. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed. Cheswick Council has passed a budget of nearly $1.7 million for this year that has no property tax hike. Passed with a 6-0 vote, the budget keeps the tax rate at 5.85 mills. The total includes 5.60 mills with an additional 0.25 of a mill to pay for maintenance at Springdale Free Public Library, which serves Cheswick, too. At that rate, the owner of a property assessed at $104,850, the median property value, will owe $613.37 in real estate taxes, the same amount as in 2020. The budget is $100,000 less than last year’s spending plan. The largest expense is $234,000, Cheswick’s share to help fund the Allegheny Valley Police Department. ....

The Springdale Township Commissioners adopted a budget of nearly $1.5 million for this year that includes no increase in property taxes. The budget, which passed 5-0, keeps the tax rate at 6.5 mills. At that rate, the owner of a property assessed at $75,000, the township’s average property value, will owe $880 in real estate taxes, the same amount as last year. The budget is $14,000 less than last year’s spending plan. The largest expense is $250,000 to help fund the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department. In 2019, commissioners approved merging the township’s police department with Cheswick’s to create the regional police department.
